14 new movies and shows to stream on Netflix, Disney Plus, and more in August 2022

We're nearly two thirds of the way through 2022. And, even though we're in the middle of summer (sorry, southern hemisphere dwellers), the world's biggest streamers have plenty of new movies and TV shows for us to watch over the next four weeks.

Below, we'll run you through 14 of the most anticipated films and TV series set to land on Netflix, Disney Plus, Prime Video, and more. That trio leads the way in the most notable streaming offerings in August, but you shouldn't discount productions available on other platforms.

Paramount Plus, Apple TV Plus, Hulu, and HBO Max come bearing gifts, too – marking the first time in a while that the seven biggest streamers have all featured in our monthly round-up. From sports documentaries and fantasy shows, to movie thrillers and superhero fare, these are the biggest films and shows releasing in August 2022.

Lightyear (Disney Plus)

When to stream it: Wednesday, August 3

Lightyear is Pixar's first-ever meta-style movie. It's the film that Toy Story's human protagonist Andy watched as a child, which ignited his love for Buzz Lightyear, leading to Andy's mom buying him the Buzz Lightyear toy that sets the events of Toy Story in motion. So it's a spin-off film in the Toy Story franchise, but it also exists as an actual movie in Pixar's animated universe. Like we said, it's meta (or complicated, if that's easier to follow).

But we digress. Lightyear tells the story of Buzz Lightyear (Chris Evans), the soon-to-be legendary Space Ranger. After his error causes his entire crew to become marooned on an alien world, Buzz vows to make amends. He volunteers to be the test subject for a new experimental hyper speed drive that'll get everyone home but, during one routine test, Buzz is inexplicably sent into the future. There, he must work alongside a ragtag group of rookie Space Rangers to stop a robot uprising – led by Emperor Zurg – and find his way back to his own timeline.

In our review, we called Lightyear "another shining example of Pixar's ability to tell captivating and grounded stories, no matter how innovative their setting is", even though its plot is very predictable. One to throw on for the kids over the school holidays.

All or Nothing: Arsenal (Prime Video)

When to stream it: Thursday, August 4

Following the relative success of its other "All or Nothing" productions, Amazon Studios' latest sports-based documentary series follows English Premier League side Arsenal as they look to qualify for the Champions League (and lift a trophy or two) by the end of the 2021/22 soccer season.

The eight-part Prime Video series will give fans an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Mikel Arteta's squad – the youngest in England's top flight last term – as they attempt to prove age is no barrier to success. Diehard soccer fans will already know whether they're successful or not, but it'll be intriguing to see how Arteta, his players, and coaching team react to the many highs and lows that last season brought.

The first three episodes launch on August 4, with episodes four to six arriving a week later, and the final two releasing on August 18.

Prey (Hulu/Disney Plus)

When to stream it: Friday, August 5

Predator sequels have received mixed to poor reviews since the Arnold Schwarzanegger-starring original wowed us way back in 1987. Now, 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg hopes to finally break that negative cycle with a brand-new entry in the sci-fi horror franchise.

Set in 1719, Prey stars Amber Midthunder (The Ice Road) as Naru, a fearless and skilled Comanche tribeswoman who dreams of being recognized as a warrior among her kin. When Naru discovers the existence of an unusual creature, she sets out to hunt it and prove her worth. Naru soon finds out, though, that she's the one being stalked by a highly evolved alien, who possesses advanced weaponry and a bloodlust to kill any worthy adversary it crosses paths with.

Prey launches on Hulu in the US and Disney Plus in non-US territories. Be sure to check back with TechRadar soon, too, for our spoiler-free review and exclusive chat with Trachtenberg, Midthunder, and producer Jhane Myers.

The Sandman (Netflix)

When to stream it: Friday, August 5

32 years after Neil Gaiman's iconic graphic novel series subverted the comic book industry, The Sandman is finally getting a live-action Netflix adaptation befitting the legendary author's distinguished works.

Its story is a complex one, but here's the general gist: it tells the tale of Dream (Tom Sturridge), one of the seven Endless and the King of the Dreaming, the realm where humanity's dreams and nightmares are controlled. When Dream is unwittingly captured during an amateurish occult ritual, however, he's imprisoned for 100 years – not to mention he's stripped of the three items from which he draws his powers.

Eventually escaping captivity, Dream returns to his domain, only to find that it's crumbled and become deserted in his absence. Determined to restore order to his kingdom, Dream sets out to reclaim his vestments, seek vengeance on those who wronged him, and maybe learn to become a bit more human and humble on the way.

The Sandman's all-star cast includes Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie, Doctor Who's Jenna Coleman, Harry Potter's David Thewlis, Logan's Boyd Holbrook, and Killing Eve's Kirby Howell-Bapstiste among many others. Don't be surprised if it makes its way onto our best Netflix shows once it's released, and check back in with TechRadar soon for our spoiler-free review and exclusive chat with Gaiman, showrunner Allan Heinberg, and the series' cast.

Thirteen Lives (Prime Video)

When to stream it: Friday, August 5

Based on the inspiring true story of the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue, Thirteen Lives launches exclusively on Prime Video in early August (following a limited theatrical release on July 29).

When a junior soccer team and their coach become trapped in the northern Thai cave system by rising waters, more than 10,000 people, including 100 divers, set out to rescue the group across a gruelling and emotional 18-day stretch that captured the hearts and minds of billions around the world.

The Ron Howard-directed flick stars Lord of the Rings alumnus Viggo Mortensen, The Batman's Colin Farrell, and Star Wars' Joe Edgerton. Numerous Thai actors also feature heavily and help to capture the authenticity, drama, and suspenseful moments in thrilling detail. Stick this one on your Prime Video movie watch list.

Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head (Paramount Plus)

When to stream it: Friday, August 5

The August 5 release train keeps on rolling with the return of Mike Judge's iconic slacker duo after an 11-year hiatus. That's right, Beavis and Butt-Head are back; the adult animated TV show – which was MTV's highest-rated series during its original 1992 to 1997 run – making its grand return on Paramount's streaming service.

The show follows hot on the heels of Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe, a movie that only launched on Paramount Plus on June 23, but one that received critical acclaim upon release. Clearly, there's still an audience – albeit one fuelled by nostalgia – for the dumb but lovable duo.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Beavis and Butt-Head's latest revival – it was briefly brought back in 2011 before being cancelled for a second time – will see the pair "enter a 'whole new Gen Z world' with meta-themes that are said to be relatable to both new fans, who may be unfamiliar with the original series, and old".

The show will actually arrive a day earlier (August 4) on Paramount Plus in the US. Other territories will get it on August 5.

Five Days at Memorial (Apple TV Plus)

When to stream it: Friday, August 12

Based on Sheri Fink's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Five Days at Memorial could be the latest in a long line of top-tier prestige Apple TV Plus shows.

The limited series chronicles the events inside a New Orleans hospital in the wake of the hugely destructive 2005 storm known as Hurricane Katrina. With flood waters rising, the hospital's power failing, and temperatures soaring, exhausted and desperate staff are forced to make numerous difficult decisions that'll haunt them – and the families of the patients they were supposed to care for – for years to come.

Vera Farmiga, Cornelius Smith Jr, Cherry Jones, Robert Pine, Adepuro Oduye, and Julie Ann Emery are among the show's stacked cast. Five Days of Memorial's first three episodes premiere on August 12, with subsequent entries arriving weekly until September 16.

Day Shift (Netflix)

When to stream it: Friday, August 12

Good vampire movies have been few and far between in recent years, but new Netflix movie Day Shift looks like it could finally that drought.

Day Shift stars Jamie Foxx as Bud Jablonski, a blue collar dad who just wants to provide for his daughter. Unbeknownst to his family, though, Bud's day job as a pool cleaner is a front for his real occupation – hunting and killing vampires.

The action-comedy-horror Netflix flick comes from first-time director J.J Perry, who worked as a stunt coordinator on big films including Star Trek: Into Darkness, Gangster Squad, Iron Man, and Django Unchained; the latter of which Foxx also starred in. Snoop Dogg, Dave Franco, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, and Karla Souza play key supporting roles in the eagerly anticipated movie.

Secret Headquarters (Paramount Plus)

When to stream it: Saturday, August 13

Fresh from his role as Agent Mobius in Marvel TV series Loki, Owen Wilson takes on a whole different role in another superhero project on Paramount Plus.

Walker Scobell (The Adam Project) stars as Charlie Kincaid, a schoolboy who thinks his father (Wilson) leads a double life. While hanging out with his friends after school, Charlie accidentally discovers his dad's secret hideout, revealing that Charlie's father is actually the world's most powerful superhero. Unsurprisingly, a bunch of villains attack the compound, and it's up to Charlie and company to protect his dad's superhero wares and save the world in his supposed absence.

Christopher Yost (Star Wars: Rebels, Cowboy Bebop) has penned the script, with directing duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Project Power) helming the project.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (Disney Plus)

When to stream it: Wednesday, August 17

The next major Marvel Phase 4 project arrives on Disney Plus in August, and it's sure to make the competition green with envy.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law stars Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) as Jennifer Walters, a lawyer and cousin to Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner/Hulk. Walters, though, isn't just any lawyer – she's also a mean, green, superhero machine, otherwise known as She-Hulk. Oh, and she just so happens to be the new head of a new law division specializing in defending superpowered beings in court. Expect the show to explore the conflict of interests between Walters' desire to uphold the law the right way and her own ability to dish out punishment to criminals.

She-Hulk's TV show will also star Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky/Abomination, Jameela Jamil as Titania, and Benedict Wong's Phase 4 regular (and Sorcerer Supreme) Wong. Expect plenty of cameos and fourth wall breaking antics from this one.

House of the Dragon (HBO Max)

When to stream it: Sunday, August 21

Three years after Game of Thrones' controversial final season ended, HBO's next live-action Westeros-set project – based on iconic author George R.R Martin's fantasy novel series – swoops onto our screens in late August.

Set 200 years before Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the dragon-riding family who ruled over Martin's fictional world for eons. The series will focus on the Targaryen civil war – also known as the Dance of the Dragons – which sees Emma D'Arcy's Princess Rhaenyra and Matt Smith's Prince Daemon battle for the Iron Throne as both look to succeed Paddy Considine's King Viserys I.

House of the Dragon will jump between different time periods as it tells the tale of House Targaryen's downfall, with events presumably leading into Robert Baratheon usurping King Aerys II, aka the Mad King. Fans of Martin's books and the Game of Thrones TV adaptation should find plenty to enjoy from this politically fraught, action-packed, and adult-themed drama series.

Me Time (Netflix)

When to stream it: Friday, August 26

Netflix has a habit of making lackluster comedies that somehow tickle the funny bone of its global subscriber base – and Me Time looks like another one to add to the pile.

Still, it's got some serious star power attached to it. Kevin Hart plays Sonny, a stay-at-home dad who surprisingly finds himself with a week's worth of "me time" when his workaholic wife takes his kids on vacation. Sonny decides to reconnect with best friend Huck (Mark Wahlberg) for the latter's 40th birthday – a wild weekend that's sure to live long in the memory and help Sonny realize just how mundane his life has become.

Just like Senior Year and The Kissing Booth, Me Time looks to be another unamusing Netflix original comedy flick. But, with A-list actors in Hart and Wahlberg in its lead roles, it should do big numbers – among general audiences, that is – when it's released.

Samaritan (Prime Video)

When to stream it: Friday, August 26

Not to be usurped by Disney Plus and Paramount Plus, Prime Video is getting on the superhero act this month.

Samaritan stars legendary actor Sylvester Stallone as Mr. Smith, a reclusive Granite City resident who works as a refuse collector. However, when Smith steps in to rescue Sam Cleary (Euphoria and The Umbrella Academy's Javon Walton) from being attacked, his superhuman display makes Sam realize that Smith is none other than Samaritan, Granite City's former protector. Samaritan was thought to have perished in a battle with arch rival Nemesis 25 years earlier – clearly, though, he faked his own death to live a life of anonymity.

In Samaritan's absence, criminal activity in Granite City has increased. As the city stands on the brink of chaos, it's up to Sam to convince Samaritan to rediscover his sense of duty and become its defender once more.

Samaritan doesn't look like it'll subvert the superhero genre, but its intriguing blend of Batman/Superman-style powers and themes, coupled with a Rocky Balboa-esque aesthetic, makes us think it could be a sleeper hit for Amazon Studios.

Andor (Disney Plus)

When to stream it: Wednesday, August 31

Two months on from the season finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi's standalone series, another fan favorite Star Wars character is getting their own spin-off project. This time, it's Diego Luna's Cassian Andor, who you'll remember from the best Star Wars spin-off movie, aka Rogue One.

Set five years before Rogue One, the series primarily follows Luna's Andor as he transforms from street thief into the rebel spy we see in Rogue One. The show will also recount events surrounding the formation of the Rebel Alliance, with the origins of key characters including Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly) and Luthen (Stellan Skarsgard) also set to be explored. Forrest Whittaker's Saw Gerrera, last seen in Rogue One, will feature in some capacity, too.

Given its street-level and spy-thriller positioning, Andor will be a grittier Star Wars show than Obi-Wan – think along the lines of The Mandalorian, and you'll get a better idea of what it'll look and feel like.

Andor will receive a two-episode premiere on launch day, with subsequent entries arriving weekly after that until November 9. The series has already been renewed for a second season, too, which will chronicle the other four years leading up to Rogue One's story.

HBO just canceled another comedy with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes

HBO has canceled coming-of-age comedy Gordita Chronicles.

According to Deadline, the show, which launched only last month to real critical acclaim, earning itself a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating in the process, has now been axed and will not get a second season, at least not on HBO Max.

Set in the 1980s, the show followed 12-year-old Carlota "Cucu" Castelli who leaves her home in Santo Domingo to pursue the American Dream after her father's work takes him to Miami.

The show starred Diana-Maria Riva and Olivia Goncalves, with Juan Javier Cardenas, Savannah Nicole Ruiz, Noah Rico, Cosette Hauer and Dascha Polanco in supporting roles.

Speaking about the decision, a spokesperson for HBO Max told Deadline: “Live-action, kids and family programming will not be part of our programming focus in the immediate future, and as a result, we’ve had to make the very difficult decision to end Gordita Chronicles at HBO Max.

They continued: "The series earned critical acclaim and a loyal following, and we are proud to have worked with creator Claudia Forestieri and our two powerhouse executive producers, Eva Longoria (who also masterfully directed the pilot) and Zoe Saldaña, to bring Cucu’s journey to the screen. We thank them and the talented cast and crew for creating such a heartfelt, groundbreaking show that connected deeply with a very important demographic.”

Eva Longoria and Marvel Cinematic Universe star Zoe Saldana, who both served as executive producers on Gordita Chronicles, issued their own statement, bemoaning the cancelation.

They wrote: "We are heartbroken by the larger programming changes at HBO Max that will not allow our special show that is Gordita Chronicles, showrun by LatinX comedy powerhouse Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz, to have a second season at its original home. As producers and storytellers who are continually seeking out the authentic and original stories that highlight our community’s joy and talent, we are so proud to have worked on this piece of magic."

They continued: "We continue to be blown away by the overwhelmingly positive critical response coupled with our growing audience numbers, which prove that viewers recognize the importance of this show’s existence and the crucial space it is filling for LatinX content in the media landscape.”

Though the show was broadcast on HBO Max, Gordita Chronicles was produced by Sony Pictures Television and is now expected to be shopped to other networks and streaming services.

Analysis: HBO is in a brutal mood

Normally, when a show is canceled, you get a statement which is a cursory round of thank yous and platitudes, which declines to mention whatever the real reason for the axe was, whether that's poor viewing figures or bad reviews.

But not this time.

This statement is direct. "Live-action, kids and family programming will not be part of our programming focus in the immediate future", HBO is streamlining and it is only interested in dramas aimed at adults, the ones who control the purse strings in a household.

Warner Bros. Discovery is on an epic round of cost-cutting after it merged earlier in 2022, and, thus far, HBO has axed The Time Traveler's Wife after a single season, period drama Gentleman Jack and animated comedy Close Enough. That's not to mention the array of cancelations at Adult Swim and on TBS, TNT and TruTV.

With excellent reviews and a cast that is unlikely to be all that pricey, Gordita Chronicles may well get picked up elsewhere, but its demise, at least for now, is a sign that HBO is having to make some very, very hard choices.

You're finally getting the Google Play Store and apps you deserve

A new day is coming for your Android apps. Google is implementing new Play Store rules for developers as it attempts to stamp out intrusive ads, impersonators, and VPNService misuse.

The big changes will roll out incrementally with the first rule going into effect on August 31 and will be complete on July 31, 2023.  Reading through the rules, it appears that some developers on the Play Store were getting away with uncouth practices, but Google is giving them ample time to clean up their act.  The Play Store is also clarifying the language on several policies as it cracks down on misinformation.

New rules

Starting August 31, apps will no longer be able to impersonate another developer/company nor can an app falsely imply that it's related to something else. Google gives the example of the RSS News Aggregator app created by Google Developer. This is an impersonator because first-party apps on the Play Store are listed under Google LLC. The developers were trying to use Google's name to sell their product.

Google also points to the YouTube Aggregator app using the official YouTube logo. This gives a false impression that YouTube Aggregator is an official app when it isn’t. Truth be told, it’s surprising that this file advertisement rule wasn’t implemented long ago, but better late than never.

Effective September 30, “full-screen interstitial ads” can no longer appear randomly. Ads will still be allowed; they just can’t pop up in the middle of a game or as you’re scrolling through a product description. And whenever full-screen ads do appear, they must be closeable after 15 seconds. Speaking from personal experience, this is a great change because nothing kills a game faster than an annoying 30-second ad that you can’t skip. Also on September 30, apps must make it clear how to manage or cancel a subscription service. Developers will no longer be able to hide the cancellation process in a labyrinth of menus.

VPN clarity

Google is also tightening the rules on apps that use a VPN (virtual private network) as its core function. Apparently, developers were misusing Google’s VPNService to collect user data or manipulate traffic via ads. Starting November 1, VPNService can only be used for, among other things, parental control, web browsing, and device security apps.

And on July 31, 2023, Google will be restricting the Exact Alarm Permission so it can only be used on alarm and calendar apps. According to Mishaal Rahman, Senior Technical Editor for Esper, this restriction will also improve battery life. He explains that if too many apps schedule alarms at different times, it can quickly drain the phone's battery. By prioritizing apps where the main function is to be an alarm, it will solve this conflict.

Effective immediately

Google has also updated many different policies to combat misinformation and make sure things stay appropriate for an app's userbase. There are so many changes, in fact, that we can't cover everything, so here are some of the more important ones.

Descriptions, screenshots, and titles must accurately reflect what the app does. For example, developers won’t be able to promote their puzzle game app with action-oriented images to make it seem more exciting. Ads now need to be appropriate to the app’s rating. Ads for a mature app can’t be placed into a video game rated for teenagers. Harmful medical misinformation will be more strictly enforced, as well. This includes misleading vaccine claims and the selling of prescription drugs without a prescription.

Again, it’s surprising these changes weren’t implemented earlier but cleaning up the Play Store is always a win in our books.

While we’re on the topic of the Google Play Store, the platform just hit its 10th anniversary recently and TechRadar’s Philip Berne made a list of the 10 apps that he stuck with all these years.

The cheapest Chromecast prices and deals for July 2022

Chromecast prices are falling further than ever these days, now that some of the best models have spent some decent time on the shelves. Not only are these devices primed for discounts themselves, but the market for streaming devices has been flooded with budget alternatives since the Chromecast first appeared. That makes for some particularly competitive Chromecast deals as well.

Why the Chromecast over the competition? Google's streamer manages to break ahead with a wide array of excellent features and excellent support from Google Assistant and the best Chromecast apps

Chromecast is a Wi-Fi HDMI dongle that you plug directly into your TV. From there you can use your smartphone or tablet to 'throw' video at your TV over Wi-Fi, whether it be Netflix movies, live football matches from the major broadcasters or simply just a funny YouTube video.

With prices already pretty cheap, there's no need to hang on for specific Chromecast sales. If you're in the UK or US and would prefer to stream content from a standalone box, you should take a look at the latest Roku deals. Otherwise, there's a strong selection of streaming devices over on our Amazon Fire TV Stick prices and deals page.

The cheapest Chromecast with Google TV prices

The Chromecast with Google TV is the newest member of the Chromecast family – with 4K HDR streaming, a bundled remote, and an improved Google TV interface. If you have a 4K TV or are planning on getting one, it's certainly worth picking one of these up. Chromecast with Google TV deals are usually around $49.99 / £59.99 / AU$99 – and as the latest model, it's well worth keeping an eye out for deals.

cheap chromecast ultra deals

The cheapest Chromecast Ultra prices

The 4K Chromecast Ultra is a high-spec streamer that's since been outshone by the Google TV model above. The specs are pretty similar aside from the interface difference – the Ultra using Android TV instead – but you won't get a remote with this model.

Chromecast Ultra deals are usually around £69/US$69/AU$95, so anything cheaper is an added bonus. It's worth noting though that the 4K-ready Amazon Fire TV Stick prices are cheaper nowadays though and that device also comes with a remote.

The cheapest Chromecast 3 prices

The newest version of the standard (non-4K) Chromecast is this 3rd-gen iteration. Generally, you'll find it for the same prices as the previous model. It's phasing out stock of the older model, although if you spot the older one for a decent amount less, you're not missing much at all by skipping the new one.

The only real improvement is a modest boost to the speed it'll load up videos and start running them in full HD. The actual dongle looks a bit different too (see images), but other than the speed boost, that's all your getting for the Chromecast 3. At least now we know why Google basically launched this without really letting anyone know.

The cheapest Chromecast 2 prices

The Chromecast 2 is very similar to the now-discontinued 2013 Chromecast. Sure, it looks a little different. And it's got slightly faster network performance and a few other tweaks such as coming with a dangly cable instead of as a rigid stick. But essentially the same product in a different shape - that's why the prices were basically the same. There's a newer version out now, although it's only moderately faster.

75/150-hour capacity
Compatible with Alexa-enabled products

Only available in the US. Amazon has released its own DVR (Digital Video Recorder) to record free over-the-air content and watch it via an Amazon Fire TV device or Echo Show (so you'll need one of those too). There are no subscription fees here, so it's a tempting option for all you cord cutters out there and with a 500GB capacity on the cheapest model, you're looking at around 75 hours of storage, so there's no need to pick up an external drive to save content, which is an issue with some DVRs.

There's a larger 1TB capacity version if you want to double down. Hook it up to a HD antenna and you'll be able to watch and record content from the likes of ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, and The CW. Better yet, just ask Alexa to do it for you if you've got a modern Fire TV device with a voice-remote.

Which Fire Stick prices are right for you?

The Fire Stick and the Fire Stick 4K prices are fairly similar to begin with ($39.99/£39.99 and $49.99/£49.99 respectively. So, when the sales do come around, you may well find that the more popular 4K model is cheaper than the original HD-only version. Even if you don't own a 4K TV, there's little point in picking up the older version when this happens (and it seems to regularly). In fact, even if the original Fire Stick prices are cheaper than the 4K offering, if there's a sale on both regardless you might as well pick up the latest model and future-proof your purchase.

The best cheap Roku sales and deals for 07 2022

We often see Roku sale prices falling well below MSRP, all thanks to the particularly competitive world of streaming sticks. Whether you're after a super simple HDMI plugin, or something designed to offer high quality 4K resolution and plenty of smart home features, you'll find all the best Roku deals right here.

Roku's Streaming sticks and boxes plug into your TV via an HDMI port, essentially turning any old HD/4K TV into a smart TV or boosting the number of apps on any modern smart TV that seems to be missing a few of your favorites. In a video streaming device world dominated by Amazon, Google, and Apple, Roku is the plucky underdog that continues to hold its own.

In addition to worldwide services like Netflix, Amazon, and Spotify, you'll find plenty of apps for your country. HBO Now, Hulu, Sling, and CBS All Access in the US and BBC iPlayer, All 4, and Now TV in the UK, for example. Frankly, Roku can't be beaten as far as the number and quality of streaming services it supports. And yes, there are options to view in 4K HDR too.

There are a lot of Roku devices out there in the wild, though, and some of them have been discontinued as they've been made obsolete by newer releases. Some, however, have an advantage or feature that new sticks don't cater for, so we've kept price comparison charts around for those models.

Generally, though, we've cut down the list to include the most relevant Roku streaming devices that are readily available and represent great value of money for you.

Roku Express 4K

Roku Express 4K Plus 2021

Roku's latest 4K HDR streaming device

Picture quality: HD, 4K, HDR10+ | Connectivity: Wireless | Remote: Voice with TV power and volume controls | Headphone jack: No | Storage expansion: N/A

Affordable
4K HDR (and HDR10+) streaming
Voice remote

The Roku Express 4K Plus was released in April of this year and allows you to stream your favorite content in 4K Ultra HD resolution with support for HDR10+. The affordable streaming stick includes a Roku voice remote so you can launch movies, search for titles and adjust the volume completely hands-free.

The 4K streaming device launched in the US and UK with a starting price of $39.99/£39.99. Even though the Roku Express 4K is a new release, we've already seen slight discounts on the streaming device, and we're hoping to see a record-low price during the upcoming Black Friday 2021 sale.

Roku Express deals

The best entry-level Roku streamer

Picture quality: 1080p HD | Connectivity: Wireless | Remote: Standard | Headphone jack: No | Storage expansion: N/A

Dirt cheap
Faster than the old cheap models
No 4K Streaming

This is the cheapest streaming device in the Roku family. The Roku Express is newer and cheaper than the other standard Roku Streaming Stick and does all the same jobs. If you want to turn any HDMI TV into a Smart TV for as little as possible - this is for you.

However, we'd be tempted to keep an eye out for a good deal on the 4K version mentioned earlier just to avoid having to buy one once 4K content becomes the norm.

Roku Streaming Stick Plus deals

A tiny yet superb 4K streaming device

Picture quality: 1080p HD, 4K, HDR | Connectivity: Wireless | Remote: Voice with TV power and volume controls | Headphone jack: No | Storage expansion: N/A

Cheap 4K Streaming
Improved remote
Packed with apps

Roku continues to give rival streaming devices something to worry about as the new Roku Streaming Stick Plus is super modern, super small and, most importantly, super cheap. Not to mention, unlike many of the older models it's been released in the UK too. Now Brits can finally join the 4K Roku party like the US has been enjoying for years! You're even getting HDR content from supported apps too.

While Amazon's 4K Fire TV Sticks are similarly priced and have a more intuitive remote design, plus Alexa support, you might find the wider range of streaming services on the Roku more appealing.

Roku Ultra deals

The one with all the features

Picture quality: 1080p HD, 4K, HDR | Connectivity: Wireless or ethernet | Remote: Voice with TV power, volume and gaming controls | Headphone jack: Yes - on remote and box | Storage expansion: Micro SD and USB

Headphone jack on remote
Expandable storage
Gaming remote
More expensive

This Roku was not released in the UK. So don't expect many (if any) UK prices. The Roku Ultra is the most feature-packed of all the Roku media streamers. It has all the quality 4K and HDR streaming and ports of the Roku Premiere Plus. So what do you get for the extra cash? The remote control gets the most attention on the Ultra as it can be used for voice search, it has extra buttons to make it a handy game controller and there's even a little speaker to help you find it via a button on the console. There's also a USB storage slot and an optical out audio port.  We're loving the option for private listening via the bundled-in JBL headphones headphones that you can plug into the remote too.

If you're not bothered about the extra audio ports, expandable storage and using the Roku for gaming, then you should opt for one of the Roku deals we mentioned earlier and save a big chunk of cash.

Spotify's new personal playlist tool tests the limits of music tastes and friendship

Just in time for International Friendship Day, Spotify is adding yet another personalized playlist.

It’s called Friends Mix and it’s made by collecting songs from multiple Blend playlists and then throwing them all together in one big mixtape. It's another way, says Spotify, for people to people discover new tracks.

Recommended songs are thrown into Blends that match the creators' taste, but may result in people missing out on potential new favorites. The idea is as your Friends Mix grows, you discover new music, then you add those songs to a separate Blend playlist exposing them to other people. By finding new artists, those friends continue to add new songs to your Friends Mix thereby creating an endless loop of music discovery.

Spotify Friends Mix splash image

Made for you

The Friends Mix will appear in the Made For You hub, but you will need to create two-person Blends first. These playlists serve as the starting point.

Creating one is very simple: all you have to do is invite a friend you want to create a Blend with. Spotify will then automatically generate a playlist based on your and the invitee’s music tastes. Do this two more times and you got yourself a Friends Mix playlist. Spotify states Friends Mix is updated daily, so there should be something new to listen to every day, provided your friends update their Blends.

Where to get it

Friends Mix is currently available right now as part of a new Spotify update available for Free and Premium users globally. The update is on the iOS and desktop app, but not yet for Android which is rather strange.

Spotify features typically come out on Android and iOS at the same time, but sometimes iPhones get first dibs. Case in point, the swipe to queue was recently added to Spotify on Android after being on iOS for years, according to 9to5 Google.

We reached out to Spotify and asked if Friends Mix will be coming to Android. A representative got back to us and simply repeated the fact that it’s available on iOS and desktop. No information on Android support, at least for now.

Hopefully, Friends Mix on Android doesn’t take years to come out.

Expanding music discovery

Spotify’s latest updates have been really pushing the community side of things to expand music discovery.

Not long ago, the Community tab finally migrated over from the desktop app to mobile, so you can see what your friends are listening to at any given moment. And we can’t forget the tool behind Friends Mix, Blend, where you can potentially create a massive playlist with up to 10 people. But there is a third-party tool that people seemed to have forgotten.

The aptly named Forgotify is a discovery engine that digs up songs with practically zero plays on Spotify. For obscure music fans, it’s a great way to find those cool songs patiently waiting to be discovered. TechRadar's own Becky Scarrott tried out Forgotify and was exposed to an eclectic mixture of ska, concertos, and German house music.

For you music fans, we recommend checking out our recently updated best music streaming services for 2022.

Get a fiery first look at Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer

A first brief glimpse at Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer has been offered up in the form of a new teaser and you can see it below:

Oppenheimer stars Cillian Murphy and is a biopic of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer. It will chart Oppenheimer's role in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II. The scientist led the Manhattan Project, a research and development undertaking that came together during World War II, which ultimately ended up producing the first nuclear weapons.

Nolan is in the director's chair, working alongside his producing partner Emma Thomas. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. It will be released into movie theaters on July 21 in 2023.

As with all of Christopher Nolan's movies, the cast list is stellar, as well as Murphy you've got Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Rami Malek, Josh Hartnett, Matthew Modine, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Dylan Arnold, Olli Haaskivi, Benny Safdie, Kenneth Branagh, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz and Michael Angarano.

Murphy plays Oppenheimer himself with Emily Blunt portraying his wife, Kitty. Matt Damon will play Lieutenant General Leslie Richard Groves Jr, a United States Army Corps of Engineers officer who directed the Manhattan Project, while Robert Downey Jr. will be playing former United States Secretary of Commerce, Lewis Strauss.

Florence Pugh is booked to play Jean Tatlock, a member of the Communist Party of the United States who had an affair with Oppenheimer, and Safdie will offer up a portrayal of Hungarian physicist Edward Teller, now known as the father of the hydrogen bomb. Dylan Arnold will play Oppenheimer's brother Frank and Harnett will portray pioneering nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence.

The teaser doesn't give much away and largely consists of a series of characters speaking over clips of fire and destruction, alongside some new footage of Murphy in character.

Fire is very much the theme of this new announcement, as you can see in the movie's newly unveiled poster below:

Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer marks new territory for Nolan in a number of ways.

Firstly it is Nolan's first for Universal Pictures after his nine-movie run with Warner Bros came to an end with the release of Tenet in 2020; and secondly, the movie is being shot on a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film. It is the first time a movie has been made with sections in IMAX black and white analogue photography. Nolan is an IMAX devotee and has used the technology throughout his career.

Analysis: Is Oppenheimer new territory for Nolan?

While you could argue that with 2017's Dunkirk, Nolan was depicting real events, but none of his characters had ever existed, so making a drama around the life of a very-real and very significant figure from history does change the dynamic for Nolan somewhat.

But one look at that teaser reveals that all the classic Nolan hallmarks are there. The stylish set-ups, the frenetic score, and his incredible ability to ramp up tension with every frame.

It seems unlikely that will be an intimate portrait with scenes of Murphy's Oppenheimer hunched over laboratory tables. Like everything Nolan does, it's got scale, pomp and verve. Roll on next summer.

Peacock suffers another huge loss as subscribers stall, are more cancelations on the way?

Peacock, the streaming service owned by Universal Pictures' parent company Comcast, has posted another huge set of losses as it announces its latest subscriber figures.

According to Variety, the streaming service ended the second quarter of 2022 with a subscriber base of 13 million and losses of around $467 million, over $100 million up from the equivalent period in 2022.

The figure of 13 million represents a flat quarter for the streaming service, which posted identical figures at the end of 2022's first quarter. That figure represented a growth of four million from the service's figure at the end of 2021, but things have flattened out in the following three months.

In a statement issued about the flatline results, Comcast chairman-CEO Brian Roberts blamed the slowdown on a strong set of options in the first part of 2022, with both Super Bowl LVI and the Beijing Winter Olympics available to stream on the service.

Roberts, who was writing in the context of overall revenues of $30 billion for Comcast, told investors that the second half of 2022 promised big things for Peacock, with the arrival of Jurassic World: Dominion, Jordan Peele's new horror Nope and the Qatar World Cup all hooking in new subscribers.

Roberts said: "At NBCUniversal, terrific results at theme parks fueled our growth in the quarter, and we expect our recent premieres and planned slate of content and live events from our media and studios businesses, including Jurassic World: Dominion, Minions: The Rise of Gru, Nope, Sunday Night Football and the World Cup, to make significant contributions later this year, including to our subscriber growth at Peacock.

"Looking ahead, our company is in an enviable strategic and financial position, with substantial cash flow generation and a strong foundation for innovation."

Are these losses new?

Peacock keeps losing money, in fact, it lost a lot more in 2021, a cool $1.7 billion. That was on top of a loss of $663 million in 2020. But, as its part of a media and theme part giant in Comcast, the streaming service's losses tend to be absorbed into that structure.

Growing a streaming service is expensive, and, what will be more concerning to Comcast is the flatlining of subscribers rather than the losses.

When you have as many revenues streams as Comcast, which has streams of income ranging from Universal Studios theme parks to ice hockey team the Philadelphia Flyers, all investors tend to care about is that subscriber numbers are going up, so that will be the bigger concern.

Will these losses result in more cancelations?

In terms of cancelations, Peacock has not been nearly as prolific as Netflix or Warner Bros. Discovery, but it has axed a couple of notable shows.

Executives canceled its planned TV adaptation of bestselling and award-winning fantasy trilogy, The Green Bone Saga, and its revival of Saved By The Bell bit the dust back at the start of May.

In fact, the streaming service has found it hard to get much off the ground. Heavily-backed dystopian drama Brave New World only lasted a season, as did The Lost Symbol, its TV spin-offs from Dan Brown's hugely successful book series.

In the coming months, the Universal-backed streamer is leaning heavily on young adult fantasy. It's about to release Vampire Academy, which brings to life Richelle Mead's novel of the same name, while the second season of drama One Of Us Is Lying is coming in October.

But, after pulling the plug on The Green Bone Saga, you have to wonder if the streamer's planned reboot of Battlestar Galactica, big-budget adaptation of Victoria Aveyard's young adult series Red Queen, which is being overseen by Elizabeth Banks, and a take on Wild Cards, a series of science fiction superhero shared universe anthologies, which is overseen by George R. R. Martin, all might find themselves in trouble.

Snapchat's creepy AR game is exactly what Snapchat Plus needs to make you want it

Snapchat’s latest lens launches you into a ghost-filled mystery, and it’s exactly what the social media platform needs for its paid tier.

Titled Ghost Phone, this in-Snapchat game is the platform’s first AR adventure, expanding its Snap Minis feature beyond simpler meditation and study apps.

Like other hits in the found phone genre, Ghost Phone tasks you with unraveling the mysteries of a phone you’ve just found. By using its apps – in particular the camera which will launch you into AR ghost hunts – you’ll steadily unlock previously hidden texts, photos, and videos that provide clues about what happened to the device’s previous owner.

We’ve tried the game out and based on our first impressions we’ll definitely be playing more. While found phone games aren’t to everyone’s liking, the AR elements offer a unique level of immersion – helping to sell the illusion that there really is a ghost hanging over your shoulder.

If you want to try Ghost Phone for yourself, it's super easy. Obviously, you’ll need Snapchat installed and you’ll need to be signed in. Next, you’ll want to head to the Lens menu; just tap the camera icon at the bottom of the main screen, then the smiley face that’ll appear on the right of the record button.

Once in the Lens Menu, you can use the Explore icon in the bottom right corner to find a much wider range of lenses. Finally, use the search bar at the top to look for Ghost Phone and you should see the lens made by the official Snapchat account.

Analysis: Could games save Snapchat Plus?

Ghost Phone is free, and it’s certainly a good thing that Snap isn’t locking all of its apps best features behind a paywall – but if AR games came to Snapchat Plus we wouldn’t be disappointed.

Plus subscribers get access to a suite of early features and tools that aren’t accessible to free members. So far, though, we’ve been pretty disappointed with Snap Plus. Its update to Snap Maps terrified our Software expert Daryl Baxter (causing him to leave the service) and Snapchat Web is currently just a disappointing Discord.

But if Snap announced that inventive new AR games were coming to the service, we’d probably resubscribe to try them out.

Snap’s Ghost Phone has shown us that its team has a knack for using AR in exciting ways. Snapchat’s paid tier would likely bring even more resources to cool (or creepy) AR game development, bringing paying customers even more impressive apps and new genres.

We’ll have to wait and see if Snapchat expands its AR gaming efforts at all – but whether its next title is another freebie or a paywall-locked game, we’ll definitely be giving it a whirl.

Google Photos update wants you to get creative - but there’s a catch

Video editing is coming to Google Photos soon, allowing users to live out their film-making dreams - however, there may be some limitations.

Users will soon be able to create and edit movies in just a couple of taps, as revealed in a lengthy Google blog post outlining the new movie-making features - and a raft of other recently released apps and tools.

But there’s a catch. Right now, the video editing software is planned to be “available first on Chromebook”. And there’s no hint when - or even if - the feature will roll out to all Google Photos users.

How does Google Photos video editing work?

Screenshot of Google Photos free online video editor

The new offering appears to provide two options: automatic video creation or building your own project from scratch. The former lets users choose a theme and the subjects, letting the app whip up a montage of videos and photos, including what Google calls “the most meaningful moments” from longer clips. Users who prefer starting with a blank canvas will be free to simply search the photo cloud storage app, then add and reorder their own media.

Whichever route users take, they can then further trim clips, add titles, music, and narration, adjust brightness and contrast, or apply the recently released Real Tone skin filters.

If the ChromeOS version is anything like the Google Photos video editor app on mobile, which launched last year, expect to see a movie editor that’s more in line with the simple, consumer-level Microsoft Video Editor when the feature rolls out.

“For professional-grade video editing, the LumaFusion app is also coming to Chromebooks. LumaFusion’s multitrack video editor lets you add graphics, visual effects, transitions and distortions, audio tracks and sound effects, narration, color grading and more,” said Google.

When TechRadar sat down with LumaFusion co-founders, Terry Morgan and Chris Demiris to discuss what is - in our view - the best video-editing app in iPad, they revealed to us:

“Developing for Android is definitely a challenge, one that requires an entirely separate development team. It’s basically rebuilding LumaFusion from scratch, but on a completely different OS, with different strengths and limitations.”

Video editing isn’t the only update planned. The photo storage and sharing site also unveiled new features for pre-installed Chromebook apps.

For creatives and content creators, chief among these are the forthcoming PDF editor tool for the Gallery app and opening up the newly launched free screen recorder app Screencast.

The next Windows 11 update could transform your laptop – and it's coming soon

Windows 11 22H2 looks like it’s going to be a major update that will bring plenty of changes and new features to your laptop and PC – and it looks like we could finally get it in September, 2022.

The Verge reports that sources have told it that "Microsoft is planning to mark the 10-year anniversary of Surface with new products this fall, and is planning to deliver the 22H2 update for Windows 11 in late September".

We’ve been getting tastes of what Windows 11 22H2 will bring, including a new-look Start menu, a better File Explorer with tabs, desktop stickers, and plenty more new features, many of which users have been requesting for a while now.

However, while we know what Windows 11 22H2 will likely add to our PCs, we're still waiting for an official release date. Because the name suggests it’ll come in the second half of 2022, September was always likely, as was October or November, which are months in which Microsoft has previously released Windows updates.

So, while this is still an unofficial release date (The Verge doesn't name its sources, so there’s no way to verify the claims), it’s the closest we’ve got to one so far, and it doesn’t seem out of the realms of possibility.

Windows Insiders, who are users that have signed up to test out early versions of the OS, have been trying out various elements of the update for a while now, which has given us an idea of what to expect. Some of the latest releases made available to Windows Insiders have also indicated that the update should be ready to release soon.

Analysis: The first major update for Windows 11 could also be its last

Windows 11

Windows 11 22H2 will be the first major update from Microsoft since the operating system launched in October 2021 – but it could also be the last. New rumors suggest that the next big update for Windows 11, codenamed Sun Valley 3 (Windows 11 22H2 was codenamed Sun Valley 2) has actually been cancelled.

Instead, rumors indicate that Sun Valley 3 features will be rolled out to Windows 11 in smaller updates known as 'moments'.

Rather than releasing any more major Windows 11 updates, it’s also suggested that Microsoft will instead launch Windows 12, which could arrive as soon as 2024.

After claiming that Windows 10 would be the last version of Windows, this rapid release of numbered Windows versions is quite a departure, and recalls Microsoft’s swift Windows release schedule in the mid-to-late 90s and early 2000s.

With Apple moving to a yearly numbering scheme, after years of macOS 10, and preparing to launch macOS 13 later this year, Microsoft may be concerned that if it doesn’t follow suit, its operating system may appear dated compared to its rival’s.

As long as Windows 12 is a free upgrade for Windows 11 users, and brings plenty of new features, then we don’t really care what Microsoft calls it.

As for Windows 11 fans (there must be some out there), it seems that the upcoming Windows 11 22H2 may be both the first, and the last, major update they're getting.

The Latest Firefox update gives MacBook Pro users a new reason to ditch Safari

The latest version of the Firefox web browser is rolling out for users on macOS and Windows, bringing some minor but welcome quality-of-life improvements – including 120Hz refresh rate support.

Now, those of you who are using the best web browsers out there on a laptop like the MacBook Pro 16-inch (2021), or have a monitor that has a VRR of 120Hz or more, can experience smoother scrolling while exploring the web.

The 120Hz Firefox update means pages will look less blurry as you scroll them, letting you more easily skim through content to find the nugget of information or link that you’re after.

Finding what you need in PDFs is also getting easier. Firefox will now automatically highlight parts of a PDF that you need to fill in, making it easier to complete your digital documents.

Firefox now looks way better on the 120Hz screen of the MacBook Pro 16-inch (2021) (Image credit: Future)

There are also a few new accessibility upgrades. When using picture-in-picture to watch a subtitled video you can change the size of the font from within the video’s window directly, making it much easier to shrink or enlarge the text. A few new sites now support picture-in-picture subtitles including Funimation and Dailymotion.

If you want to make all the text in Firefox bigger, Windows’ 'Make text bigger' setting now changes the size of all text in the browser, rather than just system font sizes. It’ll also be easier to open up Firefox on Microsoft’s OS, as the browser will now be pinned to the taskbar during installation on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Last but not least, you can finally use your keyboard to access the Tabs toolbar. Just use Ctrl/Cmd+L to reach the address bar, then Tab and Shift+Tab to move between the toolbar’s groups of buttons. Once you’ve found the right group the left and right arrow keys will let you move through individual buttons in that group.
