Happy Lei Day, Hawaiians.
Having never been to Hawaii — the closest I’ve got is a shirt I owned in the late 1990s — I feared I would struggle my way around today’s board, but the reality was that it could not have been easier.
It’s a testament to how much Hawaiian culture has permeated around the globe that I was familiar with all of today's words, with the exception of MACADAMIA — which I did not know had a strong link to the islands (I thought they were Australian). It was also a very tricky word to piece together and took me a couple of attempts to get in the right order.

Maryland is introducing the Protection from Predatory Pricing Act
It will ban surveillance pricing in grocery stores
Some consumer rights groups think it doesn't go far enough
So-called 'surveillance pricing' in grocery stores, where the cost of items is changed dynamically based on a variety of factors and shopper data, is now widespread in the US — and the authorities in Maryland have had enough.
As reported by The Guardian, Maryland Governor Wes Moore has signaled his intent to sign the Protection from Predatory Pricing Act into law after the state legislature approval, and the act will come into effect at the start of October this year.
It means stores and third-party delivery apps won't be able to adjust pricing on the fly, based on what they know about the buyer, or on other factors such as the time of day. The aim is to ensure consumers pay "a transparent, consistent price at the register", according to Governor Moore's office.
Without this protection in place, surveillance pricing — also known as dynamic pricing or personalized pricing — could lead to two people with the same items in their shopping cart paying different prices when they check out.
Other states may follow
Today, Maryland will become the first state in the country to ban surveillance pricing in our supermarkets and grocery stores. We will also prohibit election methods that dilute the votes of protected classes and create a State Foster Youth Ombudsman. https://t.co/ttQuXhccc5April 28, 2026
Consumer rights groups have welcomed the new legislation, but there are concerns that it doesn't go far enough — and that stores and apps will still be able to apply personalized pricing by using alternative methods that are less visible to consumers.
As Common Dreams reports, while stores must keep prices fixed for at least one business day, there's some ambiguity over how baseline prices and 'discounts' can be set and manipulated. Loyalty and subscription programs are also exempt from the new rules.
Other states may now follow the lead set by Maryland. There are similar bills under consideration in Colorado, California, Massachusetts, Illinois, and New Jersey, and the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is also currently running its own investigation into surveillance pricing and its impact on consumers.
"We urge other state legislatures considering personalized pricing legislation to build in stronger consumer protections and avoid loopholes that weakened this bill," Grace Gedye, senior policy analyst at Consumer Reports, told Common Dreams.
Worried consumers are also hoping that happens. Over on Reddit, responses to the practice have ranged from "this is horrifying" to others calling it "truly dystopian". Others noted that Maryland's law includes exemptions for loyalty programs and promotional offers, which means the same practice could still effectively happen in reverse through selective discounts.

Google Messages users are noticing vanishing chats on Samsung Galaxy phones
It appears to be a re-indexing issue following the shutdown of Samsung Messages in favor of Google Messages
The issue is still ongoing, but a Google expert has offered tips to fix it
Google Messages users have spotted a bug that’s randomly deleting old and new chats, and their complaints about the issue are spreading like wildfire online.
Users in the r/GoogleMessages forum are sharing their experiences with disappearing chats, but it’s difficult to pinpoint if there's a pattern between the vanishing messages. One user noticed ‘huge chunks of messages’ going missing from chats, while others have reported seeing entire conversations disappear.
Despite users trying to take matters into their own hands, the issue persists — one user also recalls a moment where a message ‘disappeared before [their] eyes’. Samsung Galaxy phones seem to be bearing the brunt the most — the Samsung A52 and Samsung Galaxy S21 have been mentioned on Reddit — but some Google Pixel users are also experiencing similar problems.
But where’s it coming from? There’s only one thing users have linked it to, and that’s the shutting down of Samsung Messages which is now entering its phase-out stage, forcing users over to Google's chat service.
Since the issues started to spread, users have been seeking ways to prevent this from happening, including checking their trash bin, clearing cache, and reviewing chat history back up, but messages are still going missing without reason. It’s led frustrated users to swarm Google’s support page to seek further advice, and the company has cleared the air slightly.
In a reply to a user query, a Google product expert shared that the Samsung Messages and Google Messages transition is in fact causing this: “While it is frustrating, the ‘vanishing’ of messages during this transition is often a sync and re-indexing delay rather than a permanent deletion, especially if they are missing from both apps”. They also detail that RCS incompatibility and synchronization bugs during the Samsung Messages-to-Google Messages crossover are also contributing to the ongoing issue.
That said, the Google expert followed by offering some workarounds. Firstly, they recommend waiting 48+ Hours if you only switched from Samsung Messages or have just noticed the issue. They also suggest leaving your phone on a charger with Wi-Fi connected so that the indexing process can finish.
Alternatively, you can use what the expert refers to as the ‘Sync Force’ trick, where you’ll need to set Samsung Messages back as your default SMS app, restart your device to open Samsung Messages, and then wait 2-3 minutes for it to load the local database. Once this is done, you can switch back to Google Messages and set it as the default again.
"How I will be able to rely on this app moving forward?"
Looking at the collective responses, it’s clear that the transition to Google Messages from Samsung Messages hasn’t been the smoothest process, and the bug has come at a very inconvenient time for those who are just getting used to navigating the Google Messages reins.
Though this is a minor re-indexing delay, those who have gotten comfy with using Samsung’s service are still very unhappy with the forced migration. A friend of our Staff Writer, Isaiah Williams, has been a long-time user of Samsung Messages, and the switch has hit them hard, who shared the following words with us:
"I was already bothered by the forced switch from Samsung to Google Messages and the loss of organizational features I loved as a small business owner, such as text categories, but I never expected to watch my messages fully disappear. They were there one minute, gone the next, and even after my attempts at troubleshooting, restarting, checking the archive and trash folders, spending ages navigating the cluttered app design and needless AI features, I have yet to fully resolve the issue. I am simply left questioning how I will be able to rely on this app moving forward when basic functionality seems so lacking."

"Attention, attention!" could have gone several ways — a military drill, a tannoy announcement, a particularly insistent teacher.
WATCH, lurking somewhat obviously in the top-left hand corner, was the word that narrowed it down to words meaning to keep a close eye on something.
After finding OBSERVE I had neatly occupied the top half of the board and was able to spot LIKEAHAWK — had I been a hawk I would have spotted it a bit more quickly, but I was pleased with my catch nonetheless.

I spent a good deal of my formative years living above my parents' shop, which was a bit of all those described here as it sold fruit and vegetables, cigarettes, newspapers, confectionery, stationery and bread as well as strange random items like sports shoes — which they sold precisely zero of for 20 years, but still dedicated shelf space to.
Anyway, I digress as none of this is relevant to today’s search, which was a rudimentary affair – although I did enjoy finding the word CORNER in the corner.

Seeing as yesterday’s game paid homage to Earth Day, I was fully expecting today’s round to be a nod to World Book Day — the most feared day in a parent's diary, thanks to the tradition of kids dressing up as fictional characters for school.
A friend of mine’s mother got the wrong day for this back in the day and he had to spend the entire school day dressed as Voldemort while the rest of the school were in their uniforms.
Anyway, I digress. Instead of books and Harry Potter we were treated to a search for some words associated with ancient mythology — I know this now after Googling, but at the time it seemed entirely random.

Today, is of course Earth Day, an annual event where we all, as a human race, can show our support for the environment by behaving sustainably and thinking about how we can protect the planet for the future. Not blowing it up would be a good start, perhaps.
Despite the theme being obvious I was quite slow to get going today and saw plenty of words that I should have clocked as game words.
In fact, I saw “repaid” before I saw REPAIR, “conserve” before the spangram CONSERVATION and “cycle” before RECYCLE.
Unlike previous games this one was decidedly lacking in ridiculously long words — perhaps the game makers were choosing not to be wasteful with their letters.

Initially, I briefly entertained, then eliminated, the possibility that today’s search was about Tom Cruise films… Then I found BOLD and deduced that we were searching for words associated with people for whom risks are occupational hazard.
With this in mind I went looking for “stunt performer”, but managed to find DAREDEVILS instead — a word which sums up people in this profession. After a run of long spangrams we returned to a relatively short one today, and one in which there was a game word (ADVENTUROUS) that was longer.
It is hard to imagine a less daring pursuit than Strands — unless of course you completed today’s puzzle whilst hanging upside down from a trapeze suspended over a ravine. And if you did then I applaud you.

The theme was a little bit confusing initially, but after spotting GLINT and GLITTER I understood that every light-associated word we were searching for began with the letter G.
There was no place then for shimmer or sparkle in this gaggle of G words.
The spangram was harder to spot, but with “light” not featured among the game words I worked backwards to find “catch” and then CATCHTHELIGHT.

As someone who has worked from home for the last 15 years, there aren't many things more frustrating than my internet connection going down in the middle of a workday. Sure, my kids act like it's the end of the world when it happens after school, when they're trying to unlock some forbidden fruit on Roblox or whatever, but that's nothing compared to the internal rage I feel when I see my camera feed stuttering on a video call.
My current Internet Service Provider (ISP) has gotten more reliable, but there was a period of time when I'd complained about them so much on Twitter that I had four technicians and their boss randomly show up at my house, asking if they could run a brand new service line in a bid to fix my issues.
Those improvements aside, it's not perfect. My connection still drops from time to time.
I've tinkered with backup internet solutions over the years, and even considered signing up for Starlink as a secondary provider at one point.
But most of the backup internet solutions offered by firewalls or Wi-Fi systems aren't seamless, requiring you to connect your router to your phone's hotspot, which then broadcasts mobile data throughout your home's network.
That's not an ideal solution when I'm on a video call, for example. My home office is nowhere near my router, so I'd have extended downtime while I move closer, connect my router to the hotspot, and by then, the call was either over or my regular connection had returned.
Then I found Eero Signal
I currently use one of Eero's mesh Wi-Fi systems, so when Eero announced its latest product, the $99 Eero Signal, my interest was piqued.
The small device that looks like a wireless charging stand for your phone connects to a compatible Eero router. When your main internet connection drops, your Eero system automatically switches to the LTE connection that Signal provides. (There's a 5G model coming later this year that I'd instantly upgrade to.)
I've had Signal set up and running in my house for several weeks now, and I have to admit — I'm smitten. It's perfectly picked up where my service provider has let me down.
Setup was easy, and it has deep controls
After unboxing the Signal and a 45W power adapter, I immediately connected it to my Eero system and the included power supply. The rest of the process required a few taps on my phone, adding the device to my home system, ensuring I was on an Eero Plus plan for the cellar portion, and I was up and running.
Eero offers two plans. You can pay $99.99 a year for 10 GB of data per month, while $199.99 gets you 100 GB of data per month through Signal's connection.
To test Signal, all I had to do was temporarily disconnect the wired internet connection going to my Eero system, and it switched over to Signal almost immediately.
Seamless backup internet achieved.
The last step to complete setup was to go through the list of devices in the Eero app, approving or forbidding access to data when Signal is active. It's a quick and easy way to ensure that your work laptop or home alarm system and cameras stay connected to the internet during an outage, but stopping your streaming devices from eating into your data allotment.
Recent maintenance put Eero Signal to the test
My home network setup is complex, and beyond the previously mentioned video calls for work being a priority, so too is all of the self-hosted websites and services I have running, including personal and business websites from my basement. When my sites go down, I get sad. I don't like being sad.
But since installing Eero Signal, my sites have had virtually zero downtime due to a lack of internet.
The reliability and speed of Signal was put to the test a couple of weeks ago when my internet service provider announced routine maintenance in my area that'd take my connection offline all day.
Bring it on, I said to myself as I read the email.
The morning of the scheduled downtime, while I was out of town and away from the house, I received an alert that my connection had dropped and my network switched over to Signal and then... nothing. I didn't get an alert that any of my sites were down, and I could pull up a live stream of my Ring security cameras.
Several hours later, I received another alert that the work was done for the day, but they were unable to finish everything, and expected a prolonged outage the next day.
The second day came and went much like the first — Signal kicked in and took over, providing data to my home's network and self-hosted services, all the while I was able to call into a Teams meeting. The Signal's LTE connection is averaging 50 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up for me, which isn't super fast compared to my standard connection, but it's enough for short periods..

Internet outages are a thing of the past
I'd become so accustomed to dealing with sporadic internet outages that I didn't realize how much time I spent worrying about it. Then again, being connected to the internet during the day is how I do my job, and without it, I'm not very productive, so it makes sense.
It also makes sense that after setting up Signal and realizing it delivers on its promise, I've felt relieved. A couple of months ago, those messages alerting me of upcoming maintenance would have stressed me out for days.
Instead, all I did was get excited because it was going to be a stress test for Signal — and it passed, easily.
That relief alone is worth the cost. Now I can spend that energy on something productive.
