Quordle today – hints and answers for Friday, March 1 (game #767)

It's time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.

Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I'm still playing now, around two years after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it's fun, but also difficult.

What's more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.

But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for today's Wordle answer, you'll probably need some hints for this game too.

I'm a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who's been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Quordle hints to game #767 and the answers to the main game and Daily Sequence.

Quordle FAQs: Everything you need to know

What is Quordle?

Where Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And rather than complete them in turn, you do so simultaneously. You get nine guesses, rather than the six for Wordle, but the rules are otherwise very similar.

It's played online via the Quordle website and you can also get to it via the Merriam-Webster site, after the dictionary purchased Quordle last year

As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world. And also as with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a fresh challenge each day.

The website also includes a practice mode - which I definitely recommend using before attempting the game proper! - and there are daily stats including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements - specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing lots of times, or guessing particularly hard words.

Oh, and it's difficult. Really difficult.

What are the Quordle rules?

The rules of Quordle are almost identical to those of Wordle.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray…

4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so an A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the final two.

5. Answers are never plural.

6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

8. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent of Wordle's Hard mode.

9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.

10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

Quordle needs to be approached in a different way to Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can't blindly throw letters at it and expect to win - you'll stand a far better chance if you think strategically.

That's the case in Wordle too, of course, but it's even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember.

1. Use several starting words

Firstly, you won't want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words.

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starting words, because the same things that make them work well will apply here too. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use up lots more of the most common consonants and that include any remaining vowels.

For instance, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters in the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options - you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe - but something like that should do the trick.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!

2. Narrow things down

Secondly, if you're faced with a word where the answer might easily be one of several options - for instance -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH - you'll definitely want to guess a word that would narrow down those options.

In Wordle, you can instead try several of those in succession and hope one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It's risky, but will sometimes work. Plus, it's the only option in Hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure - you simply don't have enough guesses.

In the scenario above, CLAMP would be a great guess, as it could point the way to four of the seven words in one go.

Threads was down for 30 minutes and no, we didn't go back to Twitter

Threads, Instagram's popular alternative to the struggling X (formerly Twitter), went offline on Thursday afternoon around 1:30 PM ET but quickly regained its footing shortly after 2PM.

People trying to access the platform on either the desktop or the Threads app found blank screens and empty feeds. There was no indication that Instagram, with which Threads is somewhat tightly integrated, suffered any similar difficulties.

Downdetector.com, which tracks consumer complaints for online service outages, noted a sharp uptick in complaints starting at around 1:30 PM.

Threads launched last year and quickly skyrocketed to prominence and popularity. Since July, it's been slowly adding features that put it almost on a level playing field with rival X, which has been bleeding advertisers, and possibly users, since Elon Musk took over in late 2022.

We did take a glance over at X where "Threads Down" never trended, but some X users did report that they, too, could not access Threads.

This was the first significant outage for the social media platform since its launch. Perhaps it coincided with Threads testing out some major new features like the ability to save draft posts or add GIFs through the desktop.

TechRadar asked Instagram CEO and Threads overlord Adam Mosseri what happened and will update this post with his response.

Quordle today – hints and answers for Tuesday, February 27 (game #764)

Read on for my Quordle hints to game #764 and the answers to the main game and Daily Sequence.

Microsoft Edge update finally lets you hide its annoying sidebar – here’s how

The newest update for Microsoft Edge, Microsoft’s proprietary browser, will finally allow users to hide the sidebar along with the sidebar button. The update brings many new changes users have been asking for since Microsoft moved the three-dot button to make space for sidebar settings. Microsoft has heard the complaints and now made it so that the sidebar can be toggled in order to show or hide it.

To be able to hide the sidebar in Microsoft Edge, you have to make sure that Microsoft Edge is updated to version 122.

According to Windows Latest, you can go to the cog icon at the bottom of the sidebar (for me, this is on the right-hand side, though it might be positioned differently if you’ve tweaked your sidebar UI) and turn off the “Show sidebar button” setting. This will then remove the sidebar button, which will be switched on by default.

If you want the sidebar hidden from view entirely, the setting for this is found in the same place and under the same icon. The setting that hides the sidebar is called “Always show sidebar, which when turned off, hides the sidebar and makes more space for the page you’re viewing in your browser. Alternatively, you can navigate to these settings by going to Settings clicking the three-dot icon in the address ribbon, selecting "Settings," and then selecting "Sidebar" from the list of various things you can adjust in the browser.

An upgraded edge

You can check out all of the changes in Edge version 122 is the full official release notes published by Microsoft. The most important alterations include the deprecation of Edge’s image enhancement feature and a rebranding of the Web Capture feature to “Screenshot”. Windows Latest notes that no changes to Web Capture’s functionality have been observed so it’s purely a branding change, and it enables users to capture the page they are viewing or a part of it. You can find Screenshot by clicking the three-dot icon in the top ribbon of Edge (mine is on the right) and clicking Screenshot

Overall, this update is definitely a welcome move from Microsoft, but it’s interestingly not a total undoing of the introduction of the sidebar. You have to manually hide the “Show sidebar button” and the sidebar in Edge’s settings, otherwise both will be enabled by default.

Microsoft wants as many people to explore its other offerings (such as MSN) as possible, and making them visible by default in the sidebar is a way to do this - though evidently one that was unpopular with some users. Still, it’s a change for the positive and I hope the response from users (as far as this change is concerned, at least) encourages Microsoft to continue making similar improvements to its browser.

Wi-Fi 7

Wi-Fi 7 is the next generation of wireless connections, already here, and offering incredibly fast connections in both personal, office, and commercial environments. Not only that but there are plenty of new features along with the faster speeds that should appeal to those who are looking to upgrade their connection.

There are plenty of reasons to make the jump, mainly because the technology behind Wi-Fi 7 is incredible and truly feels next-gen. However, there can be some downsides as well, including the price of admission since it would require you to pay for the connection as well as for one of the best Wi-Fi routers that can handle it.

The Wi-Fi Alliance has spoken at length about the benefits of Wi-Fi 7, but below is a summary of what you can expect if you make the jump.

Wi-Fi 7: cut to the chase

  • What is it? Wi-Fi 7 is a wireless technology that continues to use the 6GHz spectrum to boost internet speeds even further.
  • When is it out? It is currently available now in the US, UK, Australia, Japan, and Mexico. However, it still needs regulatory approval in many other countries.
  • What will it cost? Even though the cost will depend on the router you buy, which can range from those provided by your internet service provider to well over $1,000/£1,000 for Wi-Fi 7 Mesh routers.

Wi-Fi 7 release date

Wi-Fi 7 is already out now and has been available since January 2024, though it'll still take years for a significant amount of people to adapt to it. According to the Wi-Fi Alliance, 233 million devices are expected to enter the market in 2024, growing to 2.1 billion devices by 2028.

It also states that smartphones, PCs, tablets, and access points (APs) are expected to be the earliest adopters of Wi-Fi 7, while customer premises equipment (CPE) and augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) equipment will come after, continuing to gain early market traction.

Wi-Fi 7 routers and pricing

The price seems to range dramatically between Wi-Fi 7 routers, depending on the manufacturer and model. There are mainly Tri-band and Mesh routers out right now, but what's available doesn't fully indicate the average cost.

Some relatively affordable routers cost as low as $300, while others can set you back as much as $1,000 or more. There are also leased routers that internet providers often give you, however, those come with an additional monthly costs to your internet bill in return.

A few other companies have already launched Wi-Fi 7 routers including Netgear's Nighthawk RS700S. At CES 2024, Acer revealed its two Predator Connect gaming routers. The Predator Connect T7 supports Wi-Fi 7 tri-band which provides wider home coverage.

Wi-Fi 7 spec and performance

The Wi-Fi Alliance detailed the specs and performance of Wi-Fi 7. The first is the introduction of 320MHz channels, which are double the size of 160MHz channels. And though their larger bandwidth results in incredibly fast speeds, they can only be used within countries that allow for access to the 6GHz band. So far those include the US, UK, Australia, Japan, and Mexico, though a full list is available here.

There's also MLO or Multi-Link Operation. This allows devices on a network to transmit and receive data across multiple bands (mainly 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz) at the same time. It results in more reliable service, higher latency, and high throughput. This is especially important for VR headsets, as receiving a stream on a 6GHz band while transmitting tracking information on a 5GHz band would make for optimal performance.

It would also feature deterministic latency, which lets devices know when to expect connection interruptions. This would also benefit VR headsets as it would warn of upcoming latency issues. There's also 4K QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation), which sends 20% more data than the current 1024 QAM standard.

Finally, Wi-Fi 7 is backwards compatible with other Wi-Fi types, so older laptops will be able to connect to the new standard, though they may not be able to access the faster speeds Wi-Fi 7 offers, so make sure you check your devices' wi-fi capability before investing in a new Wi-Fi 7 router.
