Your tweets are now officially getting longer

Just as expected, Twitter announced today that it's tweaking its character count rules for tweets, meaning you now more have much more elbow room to express yourself on the service.

The microblogging site (do people still call it that?) will no longer count media attachments and quoted tweets against the 140-character limit. You can now upload photos, GIFs, videos and polls without those docking your character tally.

Twitter is also testing out changes to the @name reply convention, which would keep those from eating up characters, too. You can reply to multiple people without being left with a few scraps to express yourself. According to The Verge, if you reply to several people, all of their names will be left off of your tweet.

If it becomes rule, the @name change should be particularly helpful in fostering more meaningful conversations on Twitter, something the service isn't exactly known for.
