Oculus VR is reportedly taking a stab at motion control technology

The latest version of the Oculus Rift added head tracking and next the VR company could add motion controls.

CNET reports Oculus VR has been secretly working on motion controllers that will let players further immerse themselves into gaming experiences. Like the Nintendo Wii's motion-sensing Wiimotes the Rift's VR controls are said to bring users' hands and body movements into a game.

Supposedly the extra motion controllers will complement the Oculus Rift according to people familiar with the development process.

The new bit of technology could expand the functionality of VR headset for both games and other task. Facebook VP of Mobile Egineering Cory Ondrejka envisioned the Rift could be used for movies and users swinging their hands could be a way of navigating though titles.

For now the Oculus Rift is just a head-mounted display that users can plug into a PC. But with an integrated interface and control system, the VR headset could be a standalone device of its own.

Entering enemy territory

While motion controls could help expand the use cases and immersive experience of the Oculus Rift, it's also drawing the ire of some developers including the VR headset's most invested partners and supports.

CNET posits over a half-dozen companies were already developing their own motion control devices to pair with the Oculus Rift. It's still not known if Oculus VR will actually reveal its own motion controller system.

Even with the company's heavily backed Kickstarter well behind it, the VR company has still yet to announce a formal release date for its final headset. The company could just be testing the waters of developing its own control scheme in the same way it is only up to a second developer prototype of its VR headset; and not a final production or even test model yet.
