We've heard it rumored, but now Samsung's VR headset is showing its face. Maybe.
SamMobile scored details and an image of the virtual reality peeper, reportedly called Gear VR. The Samsung-centric site revealed the headset will be announced at IFA 2014.
Side note: The Galaxy Note 4 is also due during the German show, according to SamMobile.
Samsung apparently decided not make Gear VR a standalone virtual reality viewer and instead developed a module headset that relies on the user docking a Galaxy handset via USB 3.0. A virtual reality effect is achieved using head tracking, according to the site. The phone's accelerometer, gyroscope and processor are tapped to keep track of a user's noggin.
More Gear VR details
According to SamMobile, which doesn't state how it received the intel on Gear VR, the headset will feature an elastic strap and soft padded cushions.
There's a "see-through button" on the right side of the headset which will reputedly use the docked phone's rear-facing camera to feed in a video of the outside world. The idea, it seems, is to cut down on take-off/put-back-on time.
A touchpad along the bottom of the device is said to be directly below the transparent button. It will be used to navigate the phone's UI.
