The story begins with a renovation job at the couple's Malibu home in 1995, but when things turned sour and Lee refused to pay up, little did he know that he was messing with a former pornographer with a vindictive streak.

First teaser for The Offer series takes us behind the scenes of The Godfather

Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most important films of all time, but its road to the silver screen was not an easy one for the now-celebrated filmmaker. 

In fact, turmoil behind the scenes almost prevented it from ever seeing the light of day. Its studio, Paramount, famously hated everything about the movie adaptation of The Godfather, especially its star Al Pacino, who would go on to become a superstar based on his Oscar-nominated performance in the film. 

Of course, the movie ended up being the highest-grossing film of 1972, winning three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and changing the face of cinema forever.

Now, on the 50th anniversary of the film's release, Paramount is giving us a look behind the scenes of The Godfather's tumultuous production in The Offer, a new limited series for its own streaming service, Paramount Plus.

In the lead up to its April 28 premiere, Paramount has released the first teaser trailer for The Offer, which you can check out below.

Analysis: we're worried Paramount won't show the whole story

According to the show's official synopsis, The Offer is "based on Oscar-winning producer Albert S. Ruddy’s extraordinary, never-revealed experiences of making The Godfather”.

While the series sports a stellar cast, which includes Miles Teller (Whiplash) as Ruddy, alongside Matthew Goode (Watchmen) as super-producer Robert Evans, the trailer above leaves us a little worried that Paramount is going to offer a sanitized version of the story in order to avoid shedding more light on its past practices.

The trailer doesn't offer even a slight hint at the studio's well-documented interference before and during The Godfather's production, opting instead to focus on the film's fight to get made in the face of strong opposition from Italian-Americans, which included legendary singer Frank Sinatra.

Of course, we're basing all of this on a brief teaser trailer, so it's entirely possible that the series will indeed document Paramount's attempts to replace Pacino, fire Coppola and grossly underpay Brando. We'll have to wait until The Offer premieres on Paramount Plus on April 28 to find out if the series will leave the cannoli.

Netflix finally lets you purge shows from Continue Watching

There's so much content on Netflix that starting a series or movie and then dropping it isn't uncommon. Netflix, though, hasn't always offered the option to remove the unwanted show from your "Continue Watching" list that appears at the top of the screen. Starting now, however, you can finally cull that list on your TV.

Last week, the streaming giant unveiled the ability to remove shows from the Continue Watching row on Netflix TV devices (it previously only worked on the Web and mobile devices). 

When you select a show from the list, there's now a "Remove from Continue Watching" option. The show instantly disappears from the list unless you find it and start watching again.

While the ever-present Continue Watching list is probably a source of frustration for many of Netflix's 222 million subscribers, the change might've been prompted by just one squeaky wheel.

In the blog post on the feature update, Netflix linked to a Tweet from Twitter user @RACS040 (or "Oscar") who asked for a "Remove From" option so he could remove content "that A) We've already watched or B) We've no intention of watching. Then your algorithms can make better suggestions."

Analysis: This is a good start, but Netflix could do more

It's a welcome change but why can't Netflix offer fuller customization? There's no such control on the "Watch it Again" row or the "Top Picks for [You]". That level of control would move Netflix a step closer to true personalization. 

At the very least, as "Oscar" noted, it might make the algorithm smarter about what you do and don't like.

In fact, "Oscar" agrees, telling TechRadar via Twitter, "It’s a good start, but it needs rolling out to other rows. e.g. on my Action-Sci Fi, I’ve seen the 1st 9suggestions. It’d be great to be able to remove those, so alt content can be suggested. Amazon [has] a “Hide” function that basically serves that purpose."

With Netflix facing more competition for our streaming attention and dollars, it could take the interface lead - if it would just let go and give us all even more control.

Gmail is getting a sleek new look - but you may not like it

Your work Gmail client is set for a major makeover within the next few weeks as Google begins to roll out its new view of the future of working.

The company has announced that its new approach to email will be available for users to experience from the end of February 2022, ahead of a wider release by April 2022.

The approach looks to provide users with a one-stop shop for all their communication needs - whether via email, video conferencing, or just good old-fashioned instant messaging - without them having to open up extra tabs or windows.

Gmail integrated view

"We’re introducing a new, integrated view for Gmail, making it easy to move between critical applications like Gmail, Chat and Meet in one unified location," a Google Workspace update blog noted.

When logged in, users will still see emails displayed front and centre, but shifted significantly over to the right-hand side of the display. This is to make way for a new sidebar on the left side that contains quick links to Chat, Spaces and Meet, shifting your email folders and label options over slightly.

Google says that the new "integrated view" and navigation menu allows users to easily switch between their inbox, important conversations, and also join meetings without having to switch between tabs or open a new window. To demonstrate, it showed how a Spaces chat let the user jump straight into a Google Sheets without leaving the Gmail window.

The company adds that you'll also see all your notifications in one place, with bubbles flagging when you have a new message or chat to engage with.

Google is also working on the ability to see email and chat results when using the search bar, making it easier to find what you need by eliminating the need to search within a specific product.

"We hope this new experience makes it easier for you to stay on top of what’s important and get work done faster in a single, focused location," the company added.

The new-look Gmail will start rolling out to users in the rapid release pipeline from February 8 2022, with other customers following soon after. The new view will become the standard look by the end of Q2 2022. 

It will be available to all Google Workspace user accounts (except Google Workspace Essentials customers) as well as G Suite Basic and Business customers.

Windows 11 gets free speed boost with latest update

Windows 11 has finally cured all of the serious problems with drive slowdown that have been plaguing some users for a good while now, according to a new report.

While these issues were supposedly fixed with the December cumulative update for Windows 11, as we reported at the time, even after that patch went out, some folks were still complaining about drive sluggishness.

However, Windows Latest reports that with the latest preview patch for Windows 11 – namely KB5008353 – the full fix is delivered, and all users should be happy, according to its own testing and other anecdotal evidence online. In the update notes, Microsoft states that it: “Addresses a performance regression issue that occurs when you enable the update sequence number (USN) journal.”

The USN journal is a log of changes to files on your drive, and so it could be tied into any remaining performance issues. A Reddit user speculates that this particular tweak is the key point, and observes: “I installed KB5008353 and my OS drive NVME random write speeds are almost 3.5x faster.”

Another user on Microsoft’s Feedback Hub stated: “Not only on NVME, even my SATA SSD is faster now. Earlier Windows 11 used to boot up slower than Windows 10.”

A further major issue whereby the colors on some HDR monitors were getting messed up has also been fixed with this patch.

Microsoft says the update addresses a “known issue that might prevent some image editing programs from rendering colors correctly on certain high dynamic range (HDR) displays.”

So, no more white looking like it’s yellow, or other visual glitches which could be seriously annoying in image editing apps.

KB5008353 is in testing right now, as a preview update, but will get its full release as the cumulative update for February (next week, in fact).

Analysis: A ‘drastic’ uplift in system performance all round

Obviously it’s a relief to see the drive speed bug finally addressed for good – we hope, anyway – because this can cut performance in half and has been a serious problem for some users. The cure for misbehaving colors on HDR monitors is also very welcome, of course, and that fix has come pretty quickly.

On the other hand, the wait for the drive performance issue to be remedied has been way too long, and it’s disappointing that the apparent cure from December 2021 seemingly didn’t work fully.

There are a bunch of important fixes in this preview update, in fact, and as well as those two major ones, there are solutions for some problems with File Explorer, including a fix for “some issues that affect File Explorer’s performance when you browse for files and select files,” and a “reliability issue that causes File Explorer and desktop context menus to stop working.”

A Reddit user in the above mentioned thread clarifies: “No more slight delays in opening context menus! Basically no more delays in anything. Even the start menu opens up instantly. This was one minor thing annoying me about W11, but now I think I’m finally content with 11.”

Another Redditor agrees: “There are multiple reports from Insiders that this update is a drastic increase in system responsiveness, I just installed it, can confirm that too.”

HBO Max is expanding to 15 more European countries soon, with others to follow

HBO Max will expand to 15 more European countries from March 8, WarnerMedia has confirmed.

The move marks the second phase in the streamer’s staggered international launch, which will see territories including Portugal, Poland, the Netherlands and Croatia gain access to HBO's streaming platform in the coming months (we’ve included the full list of new regions further down this article).

The expansion will take the total number of countries covered by the service to 61, with six more – including Greece and Turkey – set to be added later in 2022. 

In each new territory, the full suite of HBO Max features, including the ability to stream to three devices simultaneously and create up to five individual user profiles, will be made available to customers. Both subscription tiers will be available, too.

The complete list countries set to receive access to HBO Max on March 8 is as follows: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia.

WarnerMedia began its rollout of HBO Max across Europe in October 2021, when the streamer launched in the Nordics (Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland) as well as in Spain and Andorra. By 2026, the company hopes to have expanded the service to 190 countries.

When is HBO Max coming to the UK?

Unfortunately, UK audiences will have to wait a while longer to access HBO Max. 

HBO signed a four-year contract with UK broadcaster Sky in 2019 allowing the latter to air certain HBO-produced movies and TV shows (like Succession and Euphoria), so HBO Max isn’t likely to arrive until that partnership has concluded in 2024. 

That being said, the absence of HBO Max in the UK doesn’t altogether deprive British viewers of HBO-produced content. As above, many of the studio’s biggest properties are available to watch through a compatible Sky (or Now TV) subscription, with only a few movies and TV shows – like The Fallout and South Side – exceptions to the rule. 

What’s more, HBO and Sky may yet broker a deal to launch HBO Max in the UK before the 2024 expiry of their current contract, though there’s been no official communications on that front.

Building momentum

This latest expansion comes shortly after WarnerMedia owner AT&T posted 2021 results that surpassed company expectations. 

The HBO portfolio – that’s HBO Max and the standalone HBO channel combined – reached 73.8 million combined subscribers in December 2021, an impressive feat considering WarnerMedia opted to remove the HBO channel from Amazon’s Prime Video Channels selection at the beginning of 2021. 

But, as we detailed in a previous report, the company will need to consolidate its content offering in 2022, especially given the absence of day-and-date movie releases (like Dune and The Matrix Resurrections) moving forward – a feature of the service that likely attracted several million customers last year.

What’s more, with rival services like Disney Plus and Netflix boasting far larger subscriber numbers (118.1 million and 214 million, respectively, as of October 2021), WarnerMedia will hope the ongoing expansion of its HBO Max service across Europe will provide a welcome audience boost.

Loki season 2 has a rumored start date – and it's pretty soon

The second season of Marvel Studios' Loki will reportedly begin filming in summer 2022.

According to Backstage magazine (thanks to The DisInsider for the tip off), principal photography will start later this year. The latest rumor comes after a similar report from The Cosmic Circus, which suggested that pre-production work on Loki season 2 would start in February. Marvel would then start shooting the next chapter in the trickster god's MCU arc in June.

Backstage's report goes on to claim that filming will take place at Pinewood Studios in London. The Ronin had previously suggested that Pinewood would be the main shooting location for the Disney Plus show, so it seems that there's some truth in this, too.

Ordinarily, we would suggest that such speculation should be taken with a big pinch of salt. However, Backstage has a good track record for revealing production start dates ahead of schedule. So it's likely that the Marvel Phase 4 TV show will start shooting pretty soon.

Once again, prominent Marvel casting director Sarah Finn will lead the search for actors to add to the superhero series' cast. Krista Husar, Jacqueline Gallagher, Gregory Korn, and Lora Shaye will aid Finn in casting new and returning characters.

Currently, Tom Hiddleston is the only confirmed star who'll be returning for Loki season 2. But we suspect Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, and Sophia Di Martino will also reprise their roles from the first season.

We've reached to Disney for comment, and we'll update this article if we hear back.

Analysis: when will Loki season 2 launch on Disney Plus?

That's difficult to say. If Loki season 2 enters production in summer 2022 – and, more specifically, in June – it could theoretically arrive in early 2023.

The show's first season took 10 months to shoot, but principal photography was delayed for months due to the ongoing pandemic. Six weeks of filming was in the can before production was shut down in March 2020. Filming restarted in September 2020 before wrapping in December 2020.

If we use Loki season 1's eventual four month long shoot as a guide, then, filming should wrap on season 2 in October 2022 if principal photography begins in June.

Loki's first season was released in June 2021 as well, meaning that there was a six month gap between the end of filming and the show debuting on Disney Plus. Again, using season 1 as a guide, if Loki season follows a similar trajectory, we could see it land on the streaming platform in April or May 2023.

Right now, that's a long way off. But there are plenty of Marvel movies and TV shows set to be released before Loki's second season to keep us occupied. Next up on Marvel's slate are Moon Knight – coming to Disney Plus on March 30 – and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which arrives exclusively in theaters on May 6.
