Here's how you can request Twitter verification

Twitter has opened the gates for anyone to request verification for their account. Here's your chance to get that blue checkmark next to your Twitter name.

Previously, Twitter's verified accounts were reserved for brands, media, and other public figures but the company now has a streamlined application process for everyone to get verified. Here's what you'll need to apply:

  • A verified phone number
  • A confirmed email address
  • A Twitter bio
  • An accurate profile picture
  • A birthday
  • A website
  • Your Tweets set to public

Twitter may also ask for a scan of your government-issued ID for verification. You'll also have to provide more information to Twitter such as why your account should be verified and additional sites to help prove "newsworthiness or relevancy" in your field. For more on how to get Twitter verified, check out the company's support page.

"We want to make it even easier for people to find creators and influencers on Twitter so it makes sense for us to let people apply for verification," said Twitter in a statement. "We hope opening up this application process results in more people finding great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for these creators and influencers to connect with a broader audience."

Twitter currently has 320 million monthly active users but only 187,000 users are verified, according to The Verge. That's a disproportionate number of accounts that aren't verified. But by having more verified accounts, Twitter users will have a clearer way of distinguishing fake or parody accounts. There's no guarantee you'll get verified but at least the application process is now open to everyone.
