Cheap TV deals May 2014

The lack of discounting on Sony TVs has always held back the brand from domination, but that shifts slightly this month with some excellent deals on Bravia TVs from the past 12 months.

With the new Spring ranges now out and about, there's never been a better time to snag a cheap TV from a noted brand – and the Sony KDL-55W805A is a brilliant example.

Selling at Richer Sound for £899.95, down from £1049.95, the Sony KDL-55W805A is a great option for those that want a cheap TV as big and as famous as possible.

At 55-inches, it's a monster, and with passive 3D, smart TV apps and a Freeview HD tuner there's not much left to chance. In our review of the 47-inch version, the Sony KDL-47W805, we loved its 'Sense of Quartz' design, its four HDMIs, three USBs and built-in Wi-Fi, concluding that, "bright content looks punchy and crisp, and the set's online services include an impressive amount of video sources."

Packed with Sony's X-Reality Pro video engine, Motionflow XR 400Hz processing for blur-free images, and Screen Mirroring that lets you see what's on your mobile or tablet on the KDL-55W805A without cables, this is a decent chance to get a big brand TV for less.

Cheap TV deals April 2014

Spring is a great time to buy a TV. Those of us after the very latest tech can begin to peruse the vast new 2014 collections of TVs from the big Japanese and South Korean brands, all of which start to deliver their latest wares in late March.

But who wants to pay top dollar for high-end TVs with fancy features when all most of us are after is a solid set?

Cue a raft of Spring deals and bargains designed to get the old stock out of the warehouses and into our homes – and none more so than the Panasonic TX-32E6B, a 32-inch Full HD LED-backlit LCD with Freeview HD and smart TV that's selling for £100 off at PRC Direct.

Described by us as "a fast-working, dependable and great-looking Edge LED TV with a smart TV user interface as impressive as any we've seen" in our review last year, the TX-32E6B makes for a fine introduction to smart TV.

The highlight of Panasonic's offering is My Home Screen, a customisable hub page that's divvied up between a TV Home Screen, Lifestyle Screen and an Info Screen, any of which can host shortcuts to apps like the BBC iPlayer, YouTube and Netflix.

Meanwhile, the images are smooth and detailed thanks to a 100Hz LED-backlit LCD panel and too picture-perfect presets called Cinema and True Cinema. Add a Super Narrow Bezel that's just that 6mm (0.2-inch) wide and you've got one of the best-looking – and now best value – living room TVs to come out of 2013.

Cheap TV deals March 2014

While smartphones are judged on their ever more finely graded pixel density, we seem to have let TVs off the hook in recent years – but that stops right here.

The new fashion for Ultra HD 4k TVs is embryonic, but long overdue; Full HD TVs' paltry two-megapixel images are ripe for an upgrade.

Bargain examples of the new screens are few and far between so far, but the cream of the crop – Sony's KD-55X9005 – is now being sold by Amazon for a great value £2,654.39. It may not be a cheap TV in the strictest sense, but that's down from a list price of £3,299, which represents a hefty saving.

The 55-inch Ultra HD 4k TV, which is based around an edge-lit LED-backlit LCD panel, boasts an unusual design that sees speakers on each side, and received a five-star review from us last year.

If those Magnetic Fluid speakers are a nice addition and help create an instant home cinema style, it's the luscious detail adorning the so-called Triluminos display that makes the KD-55X9005 truly something special. Complete with 4k X-Reality PRO upscaling of all sources to 4k, it's a reminder that at 8.3 megapixels, Ultra HD 4k is a big jump.

Prospective owners of the new 4k-filming Sony Xperia Z2 smartphone, take note.

Cheap TV deals February 2014

No sooner had we all got used to the regimented sizes of flat tellies then everything changed.

Those after a TV for a bedroom or second room once had to choose between a 26-inch or a much larger 32-inch model, which was a bit of a leap.

So we welcome forward the brand new 28-inch size, which makes its first appearance as a cheap TV in the form of the Samsung UE28F4000.

Selling in both the Co-Op Electrical Shop and Currys for £219 – down from £319 – the UE28F4000 is a result of advances in efficiency in how glass is cut during the manufacturing process (almost all TVs are cut from a piece of mother-glass) and an ever-shrinking bezel.

The upshot of these advances is that this 28-incher has the same footprint as a regular 26-inch model from a couple of years ago.

It may be new, but the Samsung UE28F4000 isn't going to change the way we watch TV; this cheap TV hasn't got smart TV or 3D on board, and only manages a HD-ready (1366x768 pixels) resolution on its LED-backlit LCD panel. However, its basic spec will suit anyone wanting a low-impact, low-cost screen for a second room, or as a multi-purpose TV for a bedroom. Besides, for those with Sky, Virgin or YouView, there's little point in investing in a smart TV with Freeview HD.

The UE28F4000's ins and outs are reasonable, too. It's got a couple of HDMI inputs – easily enough for a second TV – as well as a Scart and an optical digital audio output for routing all audio to home cinema amplifier, and don't forget Samsung's impressive user interface. It's also got a single USB 2.0 slot that, thanks to Samsung's ConnectShare software, can play all the major digital music, photo and video file formats.

With a narrow bezel and simple black styling, the uniquely-sized UE28F4000 is about maxing-out screen size – but with £100 knocked-off.

Cheap TV deals: January 2014

RIP plasma. It was the first and, for our money, it's still the best display tech out there, but with the news that Panasonic is to cut its losses and concentrate on 4k LED TVs, there are bargains to be had.

We at TechRadar don't go hunting for cheap TVs; anyone can wander around a supermarket and pick-up the latest no-brand LED TV that lasts a year or two.

No, we're only after the best-value cheap TVs around, and the current sweet-spot is the 42-inch plasma.

Take stories of plasma's demise with a massive pinch of salt. Described on TechRadar as the 'darling of home cinema' numerous times stretching back over a decade, plasma is still considered by (anyone with eyes) as the premium option for home cinema TV enthusiasts that produces a much better picture than LED. Fact.

Its drop-out status comes only from Panasonic's huge losses on plasma TV production over the last few years; no one can take away the blur-free, vibrant and contrast-heavy pictures on sets like the the Panasonic TX-P42X60B that consistently outperform LED TVs. We're destined to see new plasmas in 2014 from Panasonic, but that will likely be that.

Our advice? Grab a plasma while you can. Though the Panasonic TX-P42X60B is selling (out) at places like Currys for a mere £299, we spotted Richer Sounds putting this fine HD-ready telly out to tender at just £279.

That's for walk-in customers only, however, but it's a remarkable price for one of the most reliable 42-inch TVs around that will – judging by Panasonic's heritage in plasmas – outperform and outlast LED TVs thrice the price.

Cheap TV deals: December 2013

Cheap TVs for Christmas are everywhere, but how about a gift that keeps on giving – all the way to Rio?

Down from a list price of £399 and seen selling recently for over £300, LG's 32-inch 32LN570U LED TV is selling now for £279.99 from almost all the usual retailers.

However, if you go to either PC World or Currys you can not only take advantage of LG's unique Now TV app – Sky Sports and Sky Movies in disguise – but get some free passes, too.

Bag the LG 32LN570U (exact spec here [http://ift.tt/IJNNvd]) from PC World of Currys and fill-in this form to claim a three-month Sky Movies Pass and seven separate Sky Sports Day Passes from LG. Those long winter nights will fly by – and come Spring you'll get full access to seven crucial Super Sundays. There's nothing cheap about this TV.

However, this isn't just a short-term sweetener. With three HDMI, three USB, awesome SmartShare networking between PC-TV-phone, and the UK's best smart TV platform in tow, the dual core processor-endowed LG 32LN570U is more advanced than most

And with the 2014 World Cup in Brazil guaranteed to be shown on free-to-air TV channels, the 32LN570U's provision of BBC One HD, BBC Two HD and ITV HD – pretty rare at this price – gives this cheap TV a couple of goals head-start.

Cheap TV deals: November 2013

Sony isn't a brand normally associated with cheap TVs and you won't find many Bravias in the bargain basement, but this month one of its step-down LED-backlit LCD TVs is going for a (relative) song.

While the Japanese company concentrates on wowing us with its new Ultra HDTVs, the KDL-42W653A creeps into view as one of the best value bigscreens of the year – as long as you don't want 3D.

Who does? Selling for a mere £519.95 on Amazon, the KDL-42W653A – list price £749 – is a cheap TV with almost everything the average living room requires.

A couple of HDMI ins and a USB slot cover the basics, while Freeview HD and – just as importantly – Sony's anti-blur Motionflow XR 200Hz tech both make an appearance.

There are a few bonus features, too; you can wirelessly mirror your smartphone screen on the KDL-42W653A to share videos, photos and music, while Sony's Entertainment Network smart TV platform supplies the likes of the BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport, Netflix, Lovefilm and YouTube.

However, this W6 Series Bravia is all about X-Reality picture technology; robust black levels, natural-looking colours, a consistent backlight and – best of all – awesome detail from Blu-ray, DVD, TV and even YouTube.

Cheap TV deals: October 2013

Ultra HD is all about size, but we have an inkling that the giant 84-inch monsters shown-off and sold by the big AV brands aren't going to find many takers. The £25,000 price tags don't help; they'll come down, but regardless who wants a TV that big?

However, the Ultra HD landscape is about to change. Now on re-order from Hughes Direct but expected within days, the Toshiba 58L9363DB is about to become the undisputed cheap Ultra HD TV.

Priced-up at a penny under £3k, it's not cheap – obviously – but if you're the kind of early adopter that wants the latest tech at the cheapest possible price, the 58L9363DB is that product.

Consider the options; the only other two Ultra HDTVs of comparable size so far on sale – the first-to-market Sony KD-55X9005A and the equally new Samsung UE55F9000STX – are both stubbornly sticking to their £3,299 prices.

But bigger is definitely better when it comes to Ultra HD TV, and the 58L9363DB's lower price and extra three inches of screen real estate make it by far the best value way to get eight million pixels into your life.

At September's IFA 2013 exhibition we did see Toshiba demo a nifty-looking 50-inch version of this stunner, too, but it's unlikely to go on sale until Spring at the earliest, if at all. For now, Toshiba's 58L9363DB seems the front-runner in the Ultra HD stakes. Now all you need is something to watch …

Cheap deals for October coming very soon!

Rich pickings for cheap TV hunters are available from Currys this week as LG's 47-inch 47LA860W edge LED-backlit LCD TV is discounted from £1,899 to £1,299.

With a bezel measuring a mere 8mm, it could be the frameless living room stunner you've been waiting for, but there's a lot more to like here than mere good looks. It's got Full HD and Freeview HD, naturally, and includes LG's own passive Cinema 3D system that uses the cheap, hassle-free specs used by 3D cinemas, but it's the flexibility of the 47LA860W that makes it a winner.

The highlight is SmartShare, the TV world's most advanced, best designed interface for sharing digital media across devices. Downloaders and owners of large collections of digital videos, music and photos will adore how the 47LA860W can not only read content on USB sticks, smartphones and networked computers, but what it does with them; cue thumbnails of most recently watched, and newly added, files on the TV's central home page.

No other brand of TV integrates with digital media this seamlessly, but there's more; MediaLink surfs the web to add metadata to all digital files for easy sorting, while Screen Share pairs with a smartphone wirelessly via NFC for instant 'tap' pairing.

Add some simple, though effective voice recognition software for searching the 47LA860W's apps (which include BBC iPlayer, Lovefilm and Netflix), a pointer-style Magic Remote and throughly impressive images and the LG's flagship TV is much more than just the best-looking TV around.

Cheap TV deals: August 2013

For those after a cheap TV and wanting to make as big a saving as possible, there's a simple rule of thumb; ignore smart TV. Yes, those apps for the BBC iPlayer, YouTube, Blinkbox, Netflix and Lovefilm are handy, but they generally add around £100 to the price of a TV.

But for every rule there's an exception that proves it; step forward the Samsung UE39F5300 39-inch Full HD LED TV, which is currently all yours for just £429.99 from Argos. That's down from the usual Argos price of £529.99, though Samsung's list price is as high as £579.99.

It's a small price for such a big screen, but it's the inclusion of Samsung's Smart Hub that adds value to this cheap TV. As well as the regular apps, Smart Hub is the only such platform to include ITV Player, 4OD and Demand 5 in addition to the common-as-muck BBC iPlayer.

The Samsung UE39F5300 is one of only two 39-inch TVs in the Samsung lineup for 2013, an all-new size for flat TVs that's the result of advances in how TV makers cut glass and now put less electronics on the edges. Cue slim bezels and more screen real estate, but at the same footprint as a 37-inch TV from 2012.

You can shed an extra £10 if you're prepared to forgo Smart Hub by heading for the step-down Samsung UE39F5000 from Tesco, why would you?

The Samsung UE39F5300 is a cheap TV - and an app-tastic opportunity at this discounted price.
