The answers to today's Strands, game #474, are…

  • BABY
  • COCOA
  • BLASTING
  • BAKING
  • CHILI
  • TALCUM
  • ITCHING
  • SPANGRAM: POWDERS

  • My rating: Easy
  • My score: Perfect

ITCHING powder was a constant threat throughout my childhood. Along with quicksand and killer bees it was one of those things that comics, films and TV shows suggested would be far more widespread than it actually was – which, of course, was not widespread at all. To the extent that I do not know anyone who was actually dosed with it.

I have far more direct experience with all of the other POWDERS in today's Strands, apart from BLASTING. I don't actually know what that is, but I suspect that unlike COCOA, BAKING or CHILI it is not something you'd want to put on food (and unlike TALCUM or BABY, definitely not on a body!)

The answers to today's Quordle, game #1243, are…

  • BRAID
  • DULLY
  • HASTE
  • LURID

My three start words again came up trumps today, giving me all five letters for what became HASTE and LURID, and four each for DULLY and BRAID.

DULLY was the only mildly difficult one on account of having a repeated L, but it wasn't really tough for me because nothing else would have fit at that point. A real cinch of a Quordle.

I had no major problems with today's Quordle, on account of their being no repeated letters, no uncommon letters and no particularly obscure words.

ISLET was probably the hardest, even though I had all five letters for it; assembling them into a word proved a surprisingly tricky feat. But I got there in the end. The Daily Sequence, meanwhile, was a much harder beast on account of PUPAL and GAUZE being included.

  • My rating: Moderate
  • My score: 2 hints

Hi all, it's Marc here, back for a few days while Johnny takes a well-earned break.

Everyone experiences a bit of SADNESS from time to time, and in my case it really hit me during the Covid pandemic in 2020. I suspect I'm far from alone in that respect, and went through most of the emotions in today's Strands, from BLUE to GLOOMY to MELANCHOLY.

That didn't make it any easier to solve the puzzle, admittedly; this was a tricky one from start to finish. I needed a hint to get the first one, BLUE, then together with the theme clue of 'Down time' was able to establish what the concept was.

SADNESS, the spangram, was an easy spot but after that I had to work for every word, and needed another hint for the impossibly complicated WOEBEGONE.

The three-start-word method rarely lets me down in Quordle, and I've long played STARE, DOILY and PUNCH in the main classic game.

Today it worked brilliantly, giving me four letters for MEDIA, SHARK and MOURN, all of which I ticked off quickly.

GUPPY needed a little more thought, but by the time I got to it there were seemingly no other options.

The answers to today's Quordle, game #1240, are…

Life ADMIN is something that becomes increasingly time consuming as you get older.

When you’re a kid, no admin is required at all, then when you get a job or go to college the admin starts increasing until you reach a point where you have to take time off to deal with all the admin.

However, if you are a super organised person and you do your admin meticulously as you go along, rather than putting it off or forgetting about it, then you don’t have to take days off just to deal with all your admin. Or if you’re really rich you can get someone else to do your admin and you can go back to being a kid.

Anyway, I digress, WHINE aside this felt quite an easy Quordle, with just 15 unique letters. Right now for some admin…

The answers to today's Strands, game #471, are…

  • FINAGLE
  • FINESSE
  • CONTRIVE
  • ENGINEER
  • NEGOTIATE
  • SPANGRAM: FIGURE OUT

  • My rating: Hard
  • My score: 2 hints

This felt like a really tricky Strands, but also a hugely enjoyable one to unravel.

Unable to work out the kinds of words we were looking for, I found a handful of incorrect words as I searched for professions and ended up taking two hints. The words I was given, FINAGLE and FINESSE, seemed to be about changing and refining things, so I went in search of similar.

After weedling out CONTRIVE and the Spangram I was just about able to whittle my way to the end of the search and the satisfying emotion of completion.

How did you do today? Let me know in the comments below.

Yesterday's NYT Strands answers (Monday, June 16, game #470)
