I really struggled today and had no idea what we were searching for, even after using two hints – SEASICK and SLEEPER seemed to suggest travel.

My third correct word, PINWHEEL, confused me even more; was it referring to the small wheels of a wheelie suitcase?

ELEVATOR and BREAKAWAY didn’t help much either, both still hinting at some vaguely travel-related group of words.

It wasn’t until the very end when I got the spangram that I finally understood what “strings attached meant”. Bravo Strands, bravo!

Knowing the words we were looking for certainly made today’s Strands an easier task. But despite it being the most obvious and easiest of words to discover, I still found CONTRARY last.

I’m sure we all had the nursery rhyme (or as some people may know it, Roud Folk Song Index number 19626) going round in our heads as we searched for the various things Contrary Mary liked lining up in her GARDEN – namely SILVER BELLS, and COCKLESHELLS, and PRETTY MAIDS all in a row.

Like many nursery rhymes this is one with macabre origins; although disputed, many scholars think the words refer to Mary Queen of Scots, with the garden representing a graveyard filled with all the people who dared to upset her.

Then again, it could just as easily be about a woman called Mary who liked sticking shells in her garden.

Fed up with prompts to use Edge? Windows 11 users in Europe won’t get them anymore, but sadly everyone else will

• Microsoft is changing Edge for the better in the European Economic Area
• This is happening due to the Digital Markets Act in that region
• It means Edge will stop nagging to be the default browser

Microsoft is relenting with its constant prompting of folks to use the Edge browser under Windows 11, but not everyone is getting this welcome relief.

Sadly, the pushing of Edge in some notable ways is only being curtailed in the European Economic Area (EEA) due to rules imposed by the Digital Markets Act. With no such regulatory pressure in the US or elsewhere, these restrictions on Edge aren’t happening.

TechSpot noticed Microsoft’s blog post introducing these various changes, the key one being that Edge will stop annoying you to set it as the default browser in Windows 10 and Windows 11. It’ll only prompt a request to be your go-to app for web browsing if you open Edge directly, and this feature has already been implemented as of the end of May, with version 137.0.3296.52 of the browser.

Another change is that when Edge is uninstalled, you won’t get other Microsoft apps telling you to reinstall it.

Furthermore, when you set any web browser as your default choice, it’ll have a whole lot more file formats (and link types) tied to it, rather than having Edge still open some file types. This stood as another sneaky way to get Edge back on your radar after you’ve chosen to give it a wide berth.

Additionally, when using the Windows search box and clicking on a web search result, it will be opened in your chosen default browser, rather than Edge, in Bing.

All these changes should be in place soon, and will be rolling out in June in the EEA, save for the main one, which is already in place as noted.

Away from Edge, another potentially sizeable plus point for Windows users in this region is that they’ll be able to uninstall the Microsoft Store, should they wish. That move won’t be coming until later in 2025, though.

Microsoft clarifies that if you remove the Microsoft Store, but have already used it to install some apps, that software will continue to receive updates in order to ensure it gets the latest security patches, which is good news.

Analysis: Give us all a break, Microsoft

These are welcome moves for Windows 11 and 10 users in this region, but it’d be nice if Microsoft could implement them elsewhere as well. However, without the relevant authorities breathing down the neck of the software giant, it won’t do anything of the sort. All these behaviors will persist outside the EEA because Microsoft clearly believes they may help drive more users to Edge.

When in fact they are more likely to drive people up the wall. Repeatedly insisting that folks should use Edge in scenarios of varying degrees of overreach is a tiresome policy, as is popping up Edge whenever possible, rather than using the default browser choice. That should always be the default; no matter what’s happening, the clue is in the name, Microsoft.

Don’t expect Microsoft’s overall attitude to change anytime soon. Still, at least some people will get to enjoy a slightly less nag-laden experience in Windows 11, and fewer instances of Edge clambering onto their monitor screen in a bid to remind them that it exists. However, the majority of us can doubtless expect more pop-ups and general weirdness in terms of some of the more left-field efforts Microsoft has made to promote its browser.

Today’s quest had us searching for mythical beasts, including the fantastical wild man Sasquatch (also known as BIGFOOT) – one of the most enduring CRYPTIDS of North American folklore.

The history of Bigfoot sightings goes all the way back to 1811, with some scientists claiming that the ape-like giant could be a remnant of the Neanderthals.

Of course, it is also entirely possible that once the mythology spread, certain mischievous people might enjoy dressing as a giant ape-like man and running around the country being elusive (see the Beastie Boys' video for Triple Trouble for further information).

They’re a shy bunch, are mythical beasts, even the more recently seen ones like MOTHMAN first seen in West Virginia in the 1960s.

After several couples reported seeing a large winged black creature whose eyes glowed red, the Point Pleasant Register ran a news story with the headline “Couples See Man-Sized Bird ... Creature ... Something".

He hasn’t been seen much since, but rather than fear the beast in their midst, the town has taken them to their hearts and there is now an annual Mothman Festival in Point Pleasant where you can watch live music and take part in a pancake-eating contest.

A relatively straightforward Strands today, with lots of interesting hint words to find amid the real ones.

Proprietary products are things that have been produced by a particular company rather than a generic product. Confusion often occurs when that product becomes so successful that the product name replaces the name generic items in popular speech – such as Hoover instead of vacuum cleaner and, well, all of the products in today’s search.

The companies behind these products are often incredibly vigilant over their misuse and around enforcing their trademark. When I became a journalist, I realised this when I used the word Biro in place of ballpoint pen and used a lower case b. Two days later I received a firm letter from the solicitors for Biro, requesting I didn't make the same mistake again.

Once, when the written word was much more edited than it is today, mistakes like that were uncommon and a publication or website would spend time verifying if the hot tub in question was an actual Jacuzzi or Jacuzzi wannabe.

Now, more often than not, the price of popularity is the loss of your capital letter and sharing your spotlight with your wannabe competitors.

I thought the “on the vine” theme was referring to grapes originally, so I began by looking for varieties of wine. Finding none, I took a hint and was given a PLUM. Next I found CHERRY. At this stage I thought we were searching for fruit (not that either cherries or plums grow on vines).

The penny – or should I say plum – finally dropped when I saw BEEFSTEAK and thought “that’s no fruit”. That said, two of these types of TOMATO were new to me as I had not heard of either JUBILEE or LUNCHBOX. 

All of this got me wondering what type of tomatoes people throw at each other at the annual La Tomatina festival in Spain and the answer is a Valencian pear variety that is over-ripe for extra softness. Rock up with some supermarket cherry toms and you’ll be banned for life.
