Dia, a new web browser from makers of the Arc browser, is taking aim at Google Chrome with clever AI features

  • The Browser Company is developing Dia, a new AI-integrated browser designed to streamline web tasks and workflows
  • Dia will offer personalized AI tools, such as smart suggestions, automatic browsing, and task automation, tailored to each individual user
  • The Browser Company aims to make Dia a customizable, efficient computing environment, with early access expected in 2025

The Browser Company, the team behind Arc Browser, has announced a new web browser named Dia which will focus on heavily integrating AI into its design to make everyday web tasks easier and more efficient.

A new promotional video put out by The Browser Company for Dia describes it as not just a browser but a whole new computing environment built on top of a web browser with AI fundamentally integrated into its tools and workflows, and it’s expected to debut in the early months of 2025.

The video is actually a recruiting video for potential employees to consider working for The Browser Company, including roles in developing Dia “at the browser layer,” and it includes a few demonstrations of early Dia prototypes. It paints an ambitious vision to offer its own version of AI assistance while echoing a message we’ve seen before from other AI and tech companies claiming that their product can do your work for you.

A few glimpses of what's in the pipeline for Dia

In one demonstration, we see the functionality of Dia’s ‘insertion cursor’ (the blinking vertical bar you often see while typing in a text field). In this prototype, when The Browser Company CEO Josh Miller clicks the insertion cursor, a menu pops up with possible next steps and suggestions such as possible ways to complete a sentence as shown in the video. It seems that The Browser Company wants to develop Dia so that features like this are capable of being shaped and personalized to each user.

This tool will offer you options to complete your sentences faster while sourcing information from the internet about the subject you’re writing about, as Miller does about the iPhone’s launch and specifications. Miller also shows how it can become aware of your browser activity, such as an open window with multiple tabs. He shows an opened message where he instructs the browser to paste all of the Amazon links he has opened in a window, which it does along with short descriptions of the contents of each link.

The second demo shows off Dia’s URL address bar and how it might be capable of being personalized to you. Miller asks it to find a specific Notion document that someone else sent to him, which it does, as well as providing a summary of what the document entailed. He instructs Dia to email it to someone and ask for their opinion, which it obliges, and he follows up by asking Dia to create a calendar event instead, all in Dia’s address bar.

One of the later demos shows off Dia’s web cursor, which is capable of sweeping actions in a single click, like adding all of the items on a list into your Amazon cart. The browser’s awareness of your activity and your habits will be used to train this function, allowing you to do more tedious tasks in one step. Dia will go to Amazon and do what you tell it to automatically with this auto-browsing function, although how well it’ll do with it will have to be tested in reality.

Will Dia be the AI browser to beat?

The video explains that these features will be able to help you in a unique way because Dia will be able to become personalized to you. Miller explains that you’ll only need to ‘teach’ Dia once and it’ll be able to replicate your processes and workflows again and again.

All of these demonstrations show Miller using plainly worded descriptions in natural language, like that we use most of the time to one another. The video itself is very cinematic, but we’re some way away from being able to tell how these will be manifested by the Browser Company. You can actually do a lot of the things described in the video with third party tools, so we’ll have to see if Dia can do those better and if they’ll be of use to people.

This isn’t the first ambitious presentation and promise of a flashy AI-driven future and we have yet to see an AI assistant or product with AI assistance built in that lives up to the hype. According to Miller, The Browser Company doesn’t develop products like Arc for everyone, but rather for users who like being able to make all kinds of customizations, and I imagine Dia will be for people who want to work fast and use AI tools to cut down on manual tasks. If you’re interested in Dia, keep an eye out for official announcements from The Browser Company, as these will sometimes let you sign up for a waitlist and get early access.

The answers to today's Strands, game #277, are…

  • ANGEL
  • GRIFFIN
  • DRAGON
  • STORK
  • BUTTERFLY
  • FAIRY
  • SPANGRAM: WINGED THING

  • My rating: Easy
  • My score: Perfect

We all have our quirks, and one of mine is that I suffer from mild entomophobia (fear of flying insects), so I found today’s Strands a tiny – emphasis on the word tiny – bit triggering. My first thought was that this was another air travel theme, and it took me a hint before I realized it was a different variety of wings we were looking for.

It’s not entirely pleasing that the puzzle was made up of a mixture of both real and fantastical WINGED THINGs – the DRAGON has little in common with a BUTTERFLY (imagine, if you will, Game of Thrones with butterflies instead of dragons; yeah, it doesn't really work, does it?).

Anyway let's not discuss wings any further or I might faint.

Hi, Johnny here, taking over Strands duties from Marc (who'll still be looking after the daily Wordle today page, if that's also on your reading list).

Let's be honest, who didn't immediately think of weddings when they saw today's theme?

After a couple of hints, it became apparent that we were instead looking for the words for the dots, accents, and squiggles placed over letters to indicate how they should be pronounced – something which in our age of texting and group chats is vanishing – in English-speaking countries instead.

Unless, of course, you are a fan of heavy metal, where an UMLAUT is near-obligatory, whether it is required or not. Blue Öyster Cult were the first rock band to use this particular DIACRITIC, and they did so purely because they thought it looked good and added an air of the occult.

The use of unnecessary umlauts does lead to confusion, though. Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil told Vanity Fair that they put umlauts in their name after drinking Löwenbräu but had no idea what it meant until they toured Germany many years later and were puzzled to hear the crowd chanting, "Mutley Cruh! Mutley Cruh!"

Vince's opinions on the cedilla are unknown.

FUDGE is one of those Quordle words you have to be very careful with, because it's a classic example of the two-many-answers variety: BUDGE, NUDGE and JUDGE are all alternatives. Fortunately I still had plenty of guesses left by the time I got to it, and so didn't need to worry about it costing me the game. However, PUNCH on the Daily Sequence is even worse: BUNCH, HUNCH, LUNCH and MUNCH could all also be in play here. Watch out for these traps or you'll be in trouble…

This was a remarkably straightforward Strands puzzle after a few more complicated entries. The theme is simply ILLUMINATION, and the answers are all types of lighting: HEADLAMP, TORCH, LANTERN, CANDLE etc. I found CANDLE first, and coupled with the theme clue of lead the way that conjured up images (for some reason) of Ebenezer Scrooge stalking through the Victorian night, which led me to LANTERN and TORCH. I had to think a little more modern for the final two, but overall this was an easy one.

This is unlikely to cause too many people trouble, given how well known The Beatles' back catalogue is, and given that the theme clue wasn't remotely cryptic. I spotted TAXMAN early, then solved the others in short order, no drama.

So instead, I'll give you my verdict on the five songs here:

TAXMAN: One of their best mid-period tunes with a superb bassline, but come on, lads – you can afford to pay a bit of extra tax.

HELP: Almost impossible to hear it and not smile – or sing along.

YESTERDAY: You all know the story about the scrambled eggs, right? Good, well I won't repeat it here.

BLACKBIRD: Is it a song about a bird, or the civil rights movement? Lovely tune either way.

REVOLUTION: The single is far, far better than the album versions, Revolution 1 and Revolution 9. Fact.

And there you have it: The Beatles! Yeah yeah yeah!

Bluesky is stepping up its bid to dethrone X by getting serious about verification and impersonation

  • Bluesky is expanding its moderation team as the platform grows
  • New verification and impersonation measures are coming
  • Bluesky says it will have more to share on these features soon

Users have been arriving on Bluesky in droves – many moving over from Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter) – but while an influx of new users will please the Bluesky team, it does come with its own set of problems, including verification and impersonation.

Now, Bluesky has said it will be stepping up its efforts to make sure accounts are being run by the people they say they are. The team is apparently "working behind the scenes" to get organizations and "high-profile individuals" verified, so no one gets duped.

Impersonation and verification becomes more of a problem the bigger a social network gets: if the President of the United States posts something, you want to be able to be sure it is the President, and not a teenager on the other side of the world.

Bluesky says "impersonation and handle-squatting accounts will be removed", and it's now quadrupling the size of its moderation team, to help weed out users who aren't who they say they are – and potentially scamming other users.

More to follow

A message on Bluesky about verification

Bluesky says it's committed to keeping users safe (Image credit: Future)

While parody, satire, and fan accounts are permitted on Bluesky, they must be labeled as such – in both the handle and the bio of the account. Identity churning (changing your identity to mislead other users) is not allowed, however.

Right now we don't know much about how the Bluesky verification process is going to work – whether verified users will get badges, for example, or the methods that will be used to verify them – but expect more updates in the near future.

The Bluesky team is asking for feedback on what might and might not work as far as verification goes. Right now you can partly verify yourself by attaching a custom domain name to your Bluesky account – but that's not something everyone will want to do.

"With more users joining Bluesky, we know how important it is to identify which accounts are real," explains the new Bluesky post. "Users deserve confidence that the accounts they interact with are authentic."
