OK, so I have a bit of an advantage here, having worked on several newspapers (and many more magazines and websites) over the course of my career. If you've never been a journalist then answers such as FOLIO, BYLINE and FOLD might have been more difficult to find. But I say 'might', because I suspect this Strands puzzle will be relatively easy to solve even so. 

Much of that is down to a combination of the spangram and the theme clue, which is 'Print edition'. There's not much that the phrase can suggest, and it probably won't have taken many people long to spot NEWSPAPER running down the middle of the board from top to bottom.

With that in place it will probably have been a simple matter to find some of the more obvious of the other answers, such as CAPTION and PAGE, and they will in turn have led to the others.

Creating a Strands puzzle must be difficult. I don't know how it's done – even once you come up with the answers, the challenge of fitting them all into the grid, in a way in which they tessellate and where the letters can't be used in a different way, must be a real head-scratcher. Probably harder than solving it, to be honest!

I say all that to mitigate the fact that I really don't think this Strands puzzle works. It's not the first time I've felt that way, either. Strands is regularly great, but sometimes it just doesn't hit the mark. The game's instructions state that the spangram "describes the puzzle’s theme". The theme clue today, meanwhile, was "Way to grow!" So what is the theme? Is it the verb 'garden', as in to do some gardening? That's the closest fit, but the answers – including LOVE and PROTECTION – don't really work then. Does it really require LOVE to garden? Someone who does it for a job doesn't necessarily put LOVE into it. And SPACE? You can just about justify them all, but it's a stretch. It's one of those puzzles where at the end you're left grimacing at how it had to be forced in, rather than smiling at the smart way it was done and accepting that yes, they bested you today – or at least got you thinking, as opposed to guessing random words.

Maybe this is all sour grapes from me, because I needed one hint to find LOVE, but I suspect I won't be the only one feeling a little unsatisfied today.

Here's another example of my three-start-word strategy paying off handsomely. Not that today's Quordle is particularly difficult anyway – just one repeated letter, in FURRY, no uncommon letters, no really obscure words. But it could still have caused me problems if not for the fact that my trusty opening trio gave me all five letters for the top two segments, four for the bottom left and three for the bottom right. 

The top half were therefore solvable simply via an anagram, and neither STOIC nor LURCH tripped me up. The bottom left just needed an F added to it, to make FLESH, and that F ended up being one of the two letters missing from the bottom right, together with the repeated R.

Not for the first time, I'm completely baffled by the reasoning here. For those of you who have stumbled across this column for the first time, I'm based in the UK – and I accept that the cultural differences between the UK and US may explain my inability to understand what's going on here. Or rather, I won't accept it; it shouldn't be the case that the game is so heavily skewed towards one country. Yes, the NYT is a US newspaper, but the internet is worldwide and the whole Wordle phenomenon was to a large extent based on the fact that it appealed to people everywhere. This… this is just odd.

Exhibit A: why is HOPSCOTCH here? What does that have to do with SUMMER? Does HOPSCOTCH mean something different in the US than it does in the UK? And why is 'Beat the heat' the theme clue? A POPSICLE might help you beat the heat, sure – and indeed that was the first word I found. But how does CARNIVAL help you beat the heat? Or CAMP? It's a weird mish-mash of words. I solved it, but I almost wish that I hadn't.

I said yesterday that we'd just had the easiest Strands game of the week, but Friday's game is even simpler – to the extent that I completed the entire thing in about one minute. Seriously. Will anyone struggle with this? I seriously doubt it. There are only so many letters in the Greek alphabet, after all: 24, to be exact. But lots are unlikely to be associated with a sorority, as per the theme clue. 

KAPPA jumped out right away to me, and after that those double letters in GAMMA drew my eye. The likes of ALPHA, BETA and DELTA were all obvious, too. Was there any point in this? Not really – Strands needs to be a lot harder to make it out of beta status, I think.

Nothing major to report here. None of the words could be described as obscure, there's only one repeated letter, no uncommon letters, not even any letters in uncommon places… it's a standard Quordle on the easier side of things.

I did 'lose' one guess – by which I mean that once I've played my three start words, the soonest I could solve Quordle would be in seven. Today, it took me eight, because I played PANEL rather than PENAL. But that was a minor mishap and I never felt like I was in any danger today.

Does Strands regularly get your brain working a little too hard? Well don't worry – because today's is rather easy. I doubt you'll need any clues today, but I've included them below anyway, just in case.

This may well be the easiest Strands puzzle of the week – to the extent that I scored a 'mega-perfect', the term I've coined for when you solve Strands without even uncovering a single hint word, let alone using any of them. 

Partly that was because the theme clue, 'Tidal treasures', didn't leave much room for ambiguity, a fact that was made all the more stark when I immediately claimed GLASS and it turned blue. GLASS led directly to STONE and I was on my way. DRIFTWOOD, BOTTLE, SHELL and FOSSIL all followed with a minimum of fuss, and somewhere along the way I got the spangram, too.
