Google's new event searching just helped you sort out your weekend

Trying to find nearby concerts, date night ideas, or just an excuse to get out more? Google's latest addition to its search engine now helps you find interesting goings-on in your neighborhood.

Google is rolling out new search options on its mobile site and dedicated Google app for Android and iOS that pinpoints upcoming local events for users in the US.

Searchers can specify both their location as well as a type of event, with Google giving such example prompts as "jazz concerts in Austin,” or “art events this weekend.”

From there, interested users can see a selection of matches, complete with basic information like the date, time, and venue of the event.

The update also adds filters to quickly change what time frame you're searching for, should you want to compare what's going on tomorrow, this weekend, or even next week.

According to Google, event websites like Eventbrite, Meetup and more can also optimize the experience, allowing an interested user to buy tickets or learn more with just an extra tap on the screen.

A Google representative tells us that users can expect the feature rolled out within the next day or so, and that the tech giant has no further plans for bringing the feature outside of the US at this time.

For those travelling abroad, Google's dedicated Trips app does point out places of interest even when offline — though it's not the same as up-to-date event listings.
