The answers to today's Quordle, game #1316, are…

  • RECAP
  • BRIDE
  • SMACK
  • SPOIL

After crashing out yesterday I was delighted to just finish today's Quordle unscathed.

Three-letter-combinations were the key to my success, with I-D-E leading to BRIDE and O-I-L leading to SPOIL. My only lucky guess was for SMACK which, at that stage, could have been “scamp”.

The answers to today's Strands, game #547, are…

  • GREET
  • SERVE
  • INVITE
  • EMBRACE
  • RECEIVE
  • WELCOME
  • SPANGRAM: HOSPITALITY
  • My rating: Hard
  • My score: Perfect

The theme automatically triggered thoughts of Angela Lansbury and company singing “Be our guest, be our guest/Put our service to the test” from Beauty and the Beast.

Although today’s Strands wasn’t about pressed napkins, or dancing teacups, it was in a similar area.

My first two words – GREET and SERVICE – were easy to find, but everything else was quite tricky, including the arching spangram HOSPITALITY. And despite it being my final word it still took me a while to put together RECEIVE.

Initially, I had no idea what the theme was about, but I was finding plenty of non-game words so I took a hint to get started.

PAIL is not a word that has featured regularly in my lifetime so I immediately recognized it from the nursery rhyme – something that was confirmed when I found the spangram JACK AND JILL.

From here it was just a case of remembering what they went up the hill for and what happened when they fell down it.

I often start my Strands search in the top left corner, and it gave me a real headstart today with the easy finds of HUGE and ENORMOUS, leaving me in no doubt what I was searching for.

In fact, this was one of those games where finding non-game words afterwards was a tougher task than finding the answers.

Today’s game had me thinking about music quite a bit, with MIGHTY reminding me of The Mighty Bosstones, Massive bringing MASSIVE ATTACK to mind, and GIGANTIC prompting me to hum my favorite Pixies song co-written by original bassist Kim Deal.

The theme made me think about buildings and I thought I was on the right track when I got SPIRE straight away after beginning my search in the left-hand corner. Next, I got ARCH and was convinced we were looking for parts of buildings.

The spangram came after I thought I’d got two non-game words before putting them together and realizing I was on the wrong track. From here I hit a wall and struggled to find anything.

Two hints gave me MESA and BUTTE, which was very helpful as these are two types of formation that were unfamiliar to me. From here I was able to complete the board.

  • LOQUACIOUS
  • SPANGRAM: CHATTERBOX
  • My rating: Hard
  • My score: 1 hint

Today’s theme gave us absolutely no clues at all, so I began by circling the board looking for possibilities and non-game words that would give me a hint.

Among them, I saw Evita – which very briefly made me think we could be looking for musicals – but this was neither a game word or non-game word.

A hint gave me GABBY, which immediately made me think we were looking for words that describe someone who cannot stop talking. The first thing I thought of, and saw running across the board, was CHATTERBOX.

Some of the other words were less obvious – I had doubts over VOLUBLE as I connected the letters by guesswork and the wonderful LOQUACIOUS came last after several attempts to piece together a word that began with a Q.

My first thought when seeing the theme was rivers, but the lack of a letter V on the board ruled out that possibility. After finding a whole bunch of non-game letters I decided to take a hint.

LAKE gave me the confirmation I needed and from there I circuited the board in search of BODIES OF WATER, finding our lengthy Spangram immediately after POND.

From here it was plain sailing. Grabbing OCEAN was just a case of finding the game's only letter C.

When I saw the theme “Bee friendly” I automatically thought of nectar and flowers and quickly spotted the WILDFLOWER spangram.

Despite this being a relatively easy game I still struggled putting together a couple of the words.

I got DAISY and BLUEBELL easily enough, but it took me a while to see that the space between them was occupied by CHAMOMILE, which I associated with tea rather than flowers.

PRIMROSE I discovered in two parts – first “rose”, which even I know is not a wildflower, and then “prim”.

I just about got through without using a hint although I was sorely tempted after a slow start.

You will never need as many SUPPLIES for the rest of your life as you do at school. Well for your first day of school anyway. After the first week you wise up and realize you don’t have to fill your gigantic BACKPACK with every single piece of stationery item you may possibly need for the next decade.

I didn’t really think about it until this edition of Strands, but it’s interesting how many of the things we rub on our faces sound like food – CREAM, BUTTER, JELLY, milk. Or maybe it should be that it's incredible how many foods sound like things we rub on our faces?

Anyway, I digress, today was a search for the many different formats of MOISTURIZERS – a spangram I got after initially spotting the word “moist” and realizing there was more to it.

I got LOTION first and from there went round the board in an anti-clockwise direction without a struggle or snag, unlike when i rub BALM into my beard; that’s a whole load of struggle and snag.

Microsoft turns to AI to improve Edge browser – but after the Recall debacle I'm worried it could be another privacy nightmare

  • Microsoft Edge has a new AI feature hidden in testing
  • 'Journeys' uses your browsing activity to produce AI-powered "helpful summaries"
  • This could be a very convenient touch - the catches are it may require a Copilot Pro subscription and some privacy worries are attached

Microsoft has another AI feature planned for its Edge web browser – or at least that appears to be the case – but there's something of a catch here.

Windows Latest noticed the new functionality, called 'Journeys', in testing with Edge, where it's currently hidden in the latest Canary build of the browser. You need to set a flag to enable it, but even then, the feature doesn't actually work yet.

All you can see is the option for turning on Journeys in the interface, which lives in the 'AI Innovations' panel in Edge's settings, and the accompanying text that explains what Journeys is all about.

We're told that Journeys uses AI to turn your browsing activity, including the content of web pages, into "helpful summaries" to make it easy for you to revisit past work or resume whatever tasks you may have previously been carrying out in Edge.

Let's come back to the aforementioned catch with this new AI trick for Edge, which is that it won't be free. At least if it's implemented as the interface shows in testing, because next to the slider to enable it is an 'Upgrade to Pro' button.

In other words, this feature looks like it'll only be available to those who subscribe to Copilot Pro (at the price of $20 per month currently).

Of course, you wouldn't be paying that $20 just for access to Journeys, but a whole bunch of other stuff that's provided in the Copilot Pro package. Still, the fact remains that this isn't something your average Edge user will benefit from - unless Microsoft changes its mind about the positioning of the feature between now and release.

Analysis: how Journeys might work – and some privacy concerns

Microsoft Edge Journeys Option in Settings menu

(Image credit: Windows Latest / Microsoft)

Of course, Microsoft may never realize this concept as part of Copilot Pro, or in any other form. This is still very early work in testing. However, the company is obviously keen to push AI hard in Edge (and more broadly, Windows 11), so I'd bet that this is a fairly likely development for the future.

As to how it might work, we don't get much in the way of clues, although the name 'Journeys' suggests there will be various threads of activity kept by Edge, presumably organized by AI in what should be a helpful way.

It sounds like a potentially useful feature, though anything that involves the monitoring your browsing activity, and specifically diving into the content of web pages you visit, is likely to induce cold sweats for the privacy conscious – particularly after the whole ongoing Recall debacle.

That said, in the case of Journeys, the blurb revealed in testing also contains an assurance that "your data is securely stored on your device and is never used for AI training and advertising". I take that to mean that the relevant data will be used locally by Edge, and not sent to the cloud, thereby theoretically maintaining the privacy of your browsing history – although the cloud isn't explicitly ruled out as such. So, concerns remain at this (admittedly early) stage of the game.

Microsoft will doubtless explain more when – or rather, if – the company officially makes Journeys a part of Edge. As Windows Latest points out, Edge has a built-in AI model (Phi-4-mini) that could be used to deal with the necessary processing locally, on the device, staying out of the cloud (and making the feature run more snappily, too) – so that could well be the plan.

If this does turn out to be a vehicle to help drive Copilot Pro subscriptions, though, it may see limited usage anyway.

The first word I spotted today was DETECTIVE and at this stage I was uncertain exactly what we were looking for. The word STRANGER helped and then I saw the long snaking spangram.

ITS A MYSTERY is also the name of a rather cheesy new wave song from the early 1980s by Toyah Wilcox, the chorus of which is ingrained into my brain, particularly the line “a shot in the dark, a big question mark”. I couldn’t stop thinking of it during today’s search – which was mercifully brief.

I spotted the spangram SUPERHEROES first, before I went looking for characters from the Marvel universe – a nice touch to have the letters form an S shape.

I have trouble remembering who is part of the DC family and who is Marvel (apologies) and the one I was certain of – Spider-Man – was not part of the search (quite possibly because of that pesky hyphen).

I needn’t have worried, as you didn’t need to have any comic book knowledge to complete today’s search; none of the words were particular tricky to unravel and required little expertise.

That said, I did get the two most famous first, in HULK and WOLVERINE, before progressing to the lower tier of superherodom.
