How to watch the MTV VMAs live stream online tonight

How to watch the MTV VMAs live stream online tonight

You can live stream the MTV VMAs online tonight, which may be your one and only chance to actually watch music videos on the basic cable channel.

The MTV Video Music Awards live stream officially starts at 9pm ET (6pm PT, 2am BST), the same time it's being shown on the channel throughout the East Coast.

Hosting tonight's VMAs is none other than the twerk-happy pop star Miley Cyrus, and a small (some would say not smaller enough) chunk of the show will be dedicated to Kanye West, who is receiving the 2015 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award.

How to live stream the MTV VMAs

Unlike the Presidential Debate live stream, MTV isn't requiring a particular cable account login or password in order to watch, but it may be region locked in certain parts of the world.

So far, it's worked for us in the US, but not in the UK and Australia, with MTV pointing us to a region-locked message when attempting to access it through London and Sydney-based connections.

You can test out the live stream before MTV starts handing out its "Moon Man" statues, just in case it's blocked in your particular country, by streaming the red carpet video right now.

What time do the 2015 MTV VMAs start?

You're already missing the MTV VMAs, because technically the network is pushing an "online pre-show" that began at 6pm ET (3pm PT, 11pm BST).

There will be a broadcast-worthy pre-show on MTV and MTV.com All Access one hour before the official start time, at 8pm ET (5pm PT, 1am BST).

Really, the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards begin at 9pm ET (6pm PT, 2am BST) if you're watching it on a TV in East Coast or watching the live stream.

Despite the fact that it's being hosted at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, the show is actually being tape delayed for the West Coast. So, it's best to watch the VMAs online if you don't want spoilers.

Don't worry about missing the antics of Miley Cyrus and other narcissistic celebrities if you're part of the three-hour MTV tape delay. The live show is on a small delay, too, so you won't be able to see anything too outrageous, anyway.

2015 MTV VMA repeats

Miss the MTV VMAs when it happened live? That's okay. The channel is repeating the awards show throughout the night, starting at 11:15pm ET (8:15pm PT, 4:15am BST).

It'll then repeat twice more - for a total of four consecutive airings - every two hours and 15 minutes. It'll air twice more the next night, on Monday, almost 24 hours later.

After that, MTV is back to its regular schedule of shows that make you feel awful for binge watching television, like "Ridiculousness" and "Awkward."

MTV VMA performances

Miley Cyrus is hosting instead of performing, but there are plenty of other acts as part of this year's MTV VMAs, from start to finish.

Performances are being lead by big names like Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber and Pharrell Williams will rock the show, while you'll be able to hear a new single from Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and newcomer The Weeknd.

Other MTV VMA performers on the set list include Tori Kelly, Demi Lovato Twenty One Pilots and ASAP Rocky.

MTV VMA awards

There are 16 awards as part of the Video Music Awards plus one lifetime achievement award, being handed out at the 2015 MTV VMAs.

The top prizes are Video of the Year, Best Male Video and Best Female Video. Only artists fresh to the international music scene can scoop the Artist to Watch Award.

Genre awards at the VMAs include Best Pop Video, Best Rock Video, Best Hip-Hop Video. There's also a Best Collaboration award for duos and super groups, and a Song of the Summer statue.

Technical awards will be given out throughout the night: Best Direction, Best Choreography, Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, Best Cinematography.

Finally, MTV will hand out its Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, the channel's annual lifetime achievement award, to one artist.

That artist? Kayne West. I mean, even if it were going to someone else, there's a very good chance Kayne would try to claim it for himself (or for someone else he knows), so this is probably a good decision to announce ahead of time.

We'll continue to update this page as we monitor the 2015 MTV VMAs live stream and Moon Man statues continue to be handed out.
