Tech Bargains: Best broadband in the UK: 9 cheapest and best value for money deals

Let's cut to the chase; why do you need to compare dozens of broadband deals to find out which one is best for you when you can simply check out our list? We've rounded up what we consider to be the nine best fixed and mobile broadband deals in the UK.

Relish

If you live in London, then Relish is an enticing option. You don't need a landline as it is wireless, meaning there's no need to wait for an engineer team to dig up your road and you get to save a day off work. It promises speeds of up to 50Mbps and offers unlimited usage for £20 per month on a one-year contract. There's also a one-month option.

Virgin Media

Virgin Media sells its most affordable broadband package for as little as £25.67 per month (£12 + £13.67) for the first 12 months, then the price gets bumped after six months (18-month contract, line rental being paid upfront). It comes with the new Super Hub, up to 50Mb broadband, free setup and unlimited weekend calls to UK landlines and 0870 numbers.

DST

DirectSave Telecom has its most affordable fibre broadband (tracking at 38Mbps) on sale for £290 for the first year including £24.95 for setup, which equates to just over £24 per month. You get the router for free, there's no download limitation, free UK weekend calls are thrown in and the contract is an 18-month one that includes the first three months for free.

EE

If you're looking for mobile broadband, EE is the one to go for as far as price is concerned (coverage is another debate altogether and will depend on a lot of variables that essentially makes every user unique). You can get 15GB of 4G data per month for £15 on a one-year contract with a free Osprey 4GEE broadband modem. You will need to use the voucher code OSPREY05 at checkout, which saves you 25% off your monthly outlay for the full length of the contract. Don't want to be stuck in a long contract? Then you can get 25GB of data for £30 at EE as well on a 30-day rolling contract. Note that the voucher expires in four days.

BT

For the next five days, you can get a £100 Sainsbury's Gift card when you buy your broadband package from BT. Unlimited BT Infinity 1 + Weekend calls costs £18 per month on a one-year contract with a £37 initial activation fee and delivery charge, no download limits, unlimited BT Wi-Fi (at up to five million BT Wi-Fi spots), unlimited UK weekend calls, a free BT SmartApp plus 5GB of cloud storage. Pay £170 for 12 months line rental to save yourself some dough. Monthly total cost of ownership for the first 12 months? £35.24.

Get Online At Home

It might not be the snazziest deal around but the one from Getonlineathome would fit someone who is just starting with the whole broadband thing. You get a free computer (albeit a second hand one but with 12 month warranty) when you take on a one-year contract. You will need to pay for the landline (which depends on what provider you choose – there's five of them) and a £1.75 monthly fee. Although not clearly detailed, I expect this to be an ADSL service with a low cap. Oh and if you receive any welfare benefit, you will also receive a free copy of Microsoft Office. We have approached them to get more details.

Tentel

Now for something with a difference. How about paying for your broadband and for your line rental in one go, for a whole year. No broadband allowance, free delivery, no broadband connection or set up charges and free weekend calls, all for £249.99? Sounds like a bargain to us and it's thanks to a new company called Tentel. Monthly ROI is just over £20 making it one of the most affordable unlimited packages we've come across, even if it is on ADSL.

Fuelbroadband

Another newcomer to the market, Fuelbroadband, offers a similar package for £15 per month with free evening and weekend UK landline calls, free activation, free data allowance, up to 16Mb broadband, unlimited downloads, free Google Chromecast and a free router. What's more is that this deal is ideal for those who don't have a new line as it will be installed for free when you opt for that package. The catch though is that you will pay £19 per month after the first year. It might be worth calling the cancellation department after the 12-month contract ends though.

Talktalk

Talktalk's best-value fibre broadband package, Fibre Medium, comes with £50 Love2Shop vouchers for the next six days. It costs £5 a month for the first 12 months (going up to £5 afterwards) plus as little as £15.03 a month for the line rental if you opt for the 12-month prepaid option. You also get a router (you have to pay £6.75) but no inclusive calls though the installation is free. The total cost of ownership is just under £20.60.

What you need to know

  • I went for the cheapest Fibre unlimited broadband available where possible, otherwise, cheapest unlimited ADSL.

  • This pricelist will be updated every month.

  • Prices are calculated on a 12-month average. In all case, we've opted for prepaid, advanced line rental options.

  • ISPs, like most utility providers in a competitive market, do their utmost best to make things as complicated as possible.

  • These deals get changed very often as new technology rolls out or as sales team get new targets. Always check before you buy.

  • What's more because broadband operators are still deploying fibre-optic across the country, a lot of enticing deals may not be available to everyone.

  • If you think you have a better deal or that I have missed something, feel free to leave a comment.

  • These deals are for consumers. Business broadband tends to be more complex and more expensive.

  • I've included bundles rather than just broadband because they're often included for free.

  • I have assumed that you already have a landline installed (i.e. you don't need a new one) and that you are a new customer.
