I’m really pleased that I managed to complete today’s search without resorting to a hint, because I know absolutely nothing about “Tolkein’s world”, having never seen/read any of the Lord of the Rings or Hobbit films/books.

That said, I must know something – as I found the very middling MIDDLEEARTH spangram almost immediately, quickly followed by the top half of the grid.

Thankfully, SHIRE and RING apart, all of the words felt pretty common to the fantasy genre.

It probably says a lot about me that if ever there is a Stands with a food theme then I spot it straight away and roar through it.

Today, getting the non-game words for this column afterwards took longer than completing the search.

That said, of all the eating establishments featured I wouldn’t have predicted BREWERY would be among them. This innovation is less common in the UK but I’m all for it. The food part mainly.

'Tis the season for end-of-year recaps – from Spotify Wrapped to YouTube – and Google has now published a list of its top 10 extensions for Chrome of 2025. You probably won't be surprised to discover that they all use AI, to some extent or other.

You've got AI for writing, translating, note-taking, transcribing, summarizing, screenshotting, image editing, shopping, and more here. See how many of these you already have installed and which you might find useful.

AI browser companions

Google's first batch of recommended Chrome extensions comes under the banner of AI browsing companions, led by Monica, which gives you easy access to searches and prompts through models from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek.

Sider is based on a similar idea, introducing a sidebar to Chrome where you can quickly get help from the AI model of your choice. You can use it to translate text, generate images, and generally do everything that's possible inside a modern AI chatbot app.

Rounding out this group we've got Harpa AI for automating browser tasks and analyzing the pages you're visiting, and Quillbot as an AI assistant focused specifically on writing and editing text (no AI was used in the production of this article).

The next group are recommended AI browser extensions that can help with your work meetings (that maybe should've been emails). First up is Fireflies, which will automatically transcribe and summarize Google Meet video chats in the browser.

Bluedot offers more or less the same set of primary features, though it also works with Zoom and Teams as well as Google Meet. You need never have to manually note down what someone said ever again – at least in theory.

If you want to use AI as a tutor, then there's QuestionAI for getting complex topics explained to you through the power of AI, and eJoy, which in Google's words "turns daily browsing into a language learning opportunity".

Think that's everything that AI can do? Think again, because Google has also found time to recommend Phia, which helps you find the best price for specific fashion items on the web, with a single click. Plot twist: it uses "advanced AI" to study pricing trends.

Last but not least is my favorite of the bunch, Adobe Photoshop for Chrome, which helps me quickly remove backgrounds and adjust colors on pictures. You do need to pay for some of the more advanced features – but a free 12-month trial is included.

Photoshop uses AI too of course, but in a more transparent and useful way than a lot of the other extensions in this list. See you same time again next year for another Chrome round-up – and no doubt AI will be dominating once more.

I am the exact opposite of every word in today’s search, which is possibly why I have never been a boss and also possibly why I struggled so much to find them all.

The word BOSS actually appears twice on the board and I had it as a non-game word before discovering the spangram.

A hint gave me BOLD, which wasn’t the most generous of starts – but it was enough to make me CONFIDENT about the theme.

The Wayback Machine recently captured its trillionth web page – here are 5 surprising facts about the 'living history of the internet'

The Wayback Machine is a nifty tool, but I didn't realize just how important, or expansive, this library of internet history actually is – and what the Internet Archive, which maintains this collection, also gets up to.

In a recent report, CNN revealed a whole lot of interesting facts (via PC Gamer) about the Wayback Machine and, more broadly, the Internet Archive. At its heart, Wayback is a time machine that lets you travel back to previous versions of web pages – or, if you like, it's a TARDIW (Time And Relative Dimensions In Web).

Looking back over a timeline of any given web page is crucial for seeing what changes have been made in the past, but it also keeps pages that have been wiped from the web alive and accessible.

There's more to the Wayback Machine than this, though, and indeed the broader activities of the Internet Archive, a nonprofit run by software engineers and librarians – so here's my list of five surprising facts.

1. A trillion pages in the book of the web

Just over a month ago, the Wayback Machine logged its trillionth web page, which is mind-boggling. We're told that in contemporary times, this library is being added to with closing in on 150TB (that's 150,000GB) worth of web pages on a daily basis.

2. A sanctuary of servers

The Internet Archive is based in the Richmond District of San Francisco in the US, in a building that was the 'Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist' – a seriously striking piece of architecture featuring eight huge columns along the front (it resembles the organization's logo).

The church still has its stained-glass windows, but inside, there are now a bunch of servers storing precious data for the Wayback Machine – although, of course, there aren't a trillion-plus web pages within the walls of the headquarters. The majority of the Internet Archive's servers are in a big warehouse outside of San Francisco.

The servers in the ex-church are symbolically located in the building's main sanctuary.

3. The importance of preserving the web

There's great value in keeping historical snapshots of web pages, whether those sites are run by governments, corporations, other organizations, or indeed the blogs of individuals. The ability to see changes can throw light on the motives of said organizations and preserve pieces of written content that would otherwise be erased from our collective memory (eventually).

In the case of governments making changes to official websites, it can be vital for journalists to have access to previous versions of web pages to clearly see the impact of any alterations.

4. Not just web pages

The Internet Archive isn't just about preserving the history of the web, but also digitizing books (see above), and other media such as vintage vinyl records (from as far back as the 1920s), CDs, cassette tapes, VHS, TV shows, and video games too.

I wasn't remotely aware of the diversity of the historical records that the Archive keeps in this respect.

5. Founded by an internet pioneer

Brewster Kahle, the founder of the Internet Archive and the Wayback Machine (in 2001), was an internet pioneer and previously one of the creators of the precursor to the World Wide Web. This was the WAIS (Wide Area Information Servers), which was the first distributed-search and document-retrieval system to grace the internet.

I once had a severe allergic reaction to a bite from a variety of RECLUSE spider when on a trip to Venice. This caused my legs to swell and left me with what looked like large bruises. In Italy they call them violin spiders, which makes them sound quite talented.

Anyway, I digress. It probably says a lot about our modern age that my first thought on seeing the theme of “on the web” was the internet, rather than SPIDERS. Even after getting JUMPING, I was thinking “what’s that got to do with websites?”

A hint gave me HOUSE and I was finally on my way, feeling something of a fool after seeing the spangram.

Incidentally, did you know that a JUMPING spider can leap 50 times its body length, That’s the equivalent of a human jumping to the top of an eight-storey building.

What is NYT Strands?

Strands is the NYT's not-so-new-any-more word game, following Wordle and Connections. It's now a fully fledged member of the NYT's games stable that has been running for a year and which can be played on the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
