The answers to today's Strands, game #638, are…

  • SKATES
  • PUCK
  • STICKS
  • GOALS
  • SCOREBOARD
  • ZAMBONI
  • SPANGRAM: HOCKEYRINK
  • My rating: Hard
  • My score: Perfect

From the theme, my first thought was SKATES – but it wasn’t until I got PUCK that I realized that this was a hockey-themed search.

After getting the STICKS and GOALS answers, I hit the limit of my hockey knowledge but thankfully got SCOREBOARD. This just left ZAMBONI – a word I had not heard of until today, but I have since learned is the brand name of the machine that cleans the rink.

I had thought that my dreams of being involved in professional sports were over, but now that I know that the job of zamboni driver exists… although as someone who struggles with reverse parking, I'm not sure that I’d qualify.

It was not until I'd completed the list of animals that I realized this was a pairs game, with one half of the search matching the other.

All very clever – but this was not a game without its frustrations. I needed a hint to get going and struggled to see the spangram until the very end of the game.

No matter, as I got there in the end. Plus the inclusion of the word GEESE prompted me to play my favorite song of the year, Taxes, by the band of the same name. It’s magnificent. I’d like to think that secretly that was the whole reason for today’s search.

I didn’t use any hints today but this game was far from easy.

This was down to two factors. The first was a needlessly long spangram – just the word “machineparts” would have been more appropriate – which took me ages to put together.

The second reason was that Strands always takes longer when you don’t know what you’re looking for. Regardless, by working my way around the board I managed to find everything along with plenty of non-game words. Resisting turning them into hints was my biggest achievement.

The answers to today's Strands, game #633, are…

  • QUIET
  • COACH
  • DINING
  • OBSERVATION
  • SLEEPER
  • SPANGRAM: PASSENGERTRAIN
  • My rating: Hard
  • My score: 2 hints

Sometimes seeing part of a word is the thing that helps you find all of it. This was the case today when I worked backwards from T-I-O-N to get the longest game word OBSERVATION.

After finding QUIET and not understanding its significance I took two hints getting COACH and DINING before landing that extra-long spangram – which, very pleasingly, was sort of in the shape of a train.

The best thing about Amtrak’s OBSERVATION car is that they have seats that face sideways rather than the direction of travel, making the view the star, something that’s unique in my experience of train travel.

I had no clue what we would be searching for from the theme, so began in the hope that I would find something as I searched the board.

Even non-game words were hard to find today, but I eventually found enough to give me a couple of hints. ACME meant nothing to me beyond being the company Wile E. Coyote bought his dodgy gadgets from, for his attempts to catch the Road Runner.

My next hint word APEX was more useful and the penny finally dropped. SUMMIT, PINNACLE and PEAK came next, before I finally saw the spangram – top marks for it being placed at the UPPERLIMIT of today’s grid.

Strands has included some enormously long spangrams in the past, but I’m pretty sure WHATCHAMACALLIT is the longest ever actual game word. Let me know if you can remember a longer one.

The theme gave the game away, but it still took me a while to get the spangram as I saw “candybrands” first and had to return to get CANDYAISLE later in the game.

This was actually quite a tricky game for those of us outside the US, so I had to use a couple of hints to get started before hitting a candy I actually knew in STARBURST (previously known as Opal Fruits in Europe).

X was down again– here's how its latest outage played out

It's been a bad week for X – the social media site and former Twitter home just went down again for the second time this week, but fortunately seems to have quickly recovered.

The first spike in reported problems on Downdetector happened at around 10.17am ET / 3.17pm GMT, with over 3,000 reports in the US and over 300 in the UK. Those hit a peak of 19,000 in the UK and 4,800 in the UK, but quickly dropped again as quickly as they rose.

There was no official reason for this big blip, but it followed a much bigger one on Tuesday November 18 which saw the site struggle for several hours, following some problems at the cloud giant Cloudflare.

There have been no such Cloudflare isses today, and X seems to have now fully recovered on desktop and mobile...

Another bad day for X?

A downdetector graph showing problems at X

Just three days on from X's previous outage, we're now seeing a huge spike in reports on Downdetector.

In the US, there are currently 8,300 reports (that's approaching the early heights of the outage earlier this week), while in the UK it's also down on both web and mobile for many with over 4,000 reports.

It isn't yet clear what's caused this second outage, but a picture should emerge shortly –hopefully this one is a little more short-lived...

Both the app and web affected

A laptop screen showing X being down

According to Downdetector and our own experiences, X is struggling on both the mobile app and website.

Strangely, the web version lets us post but isn't showing us a feed, while the mobile app is showing the usual "posts aren't loading right now" message".

However, there are already positive signs that it's returning for some, so the signs are good that this is a much shorter outage than earlier this week.

What's causing the problems?

A laptop screen showing outages on Downdetector

There are spikes in reported problems elsewhere, but despite a small uptick in Cloudflare reports on Downdetector there's no suggestion it's related to the cloud giant this time – the Cloudflare status page has a much healthier green 'all systems operational' label today.

Naturally, there's also been a sharp rise in reported Grok issues alongside X, but it seems the issues are now easing – both desktop and mobile are working okay for us, and the graph has dropped to a much healthier 2,600 reports in the UK and only around 500 in the UK.

The trend is most definitely positive, but I'll be keeping a close eye in case there are any aftershocks...

Let the doom-scrolling resume

A Downdetector graph showing an X outage

Good news for fans of Grok and freshly-cooked hot takes – X seems to be working fine again on both mobile and desktop.

The Downdetector graph has plummeted from a serious high of over 18,500 reports in the US and 3,100 in the UK, to minimal numbers again.

That quite was quite a big blip, but fortunately only a blip this time – and there don't seem to be any major repercussions at other services, aside from WeTransfer which has just seen a spike in reports.

I think we can consider this outage as case closed – and hopefully that'll be it for the weekend so we can continue our doom-scrolling.

Even though I had no clue about today’s theme I found it super easy to find all the various teams beginning with TIGERS, which was conveniently placed at the bottom of the square.

My guess was that we were looking for the names of SPORTSTEAMS affiliated with Ivy League colleges, something that’s not really very well known here in the UK where I’m based.

It was interesting to see a couple of unique nicknames amid the usual ferocious animals in QUAKERS, associated with the athletic teams from the University of Pennsylvania, and CRIMSON, which is associated with the team from Hogwarts…

… and Harvard.

Back in the day I once found myself as a board member of a short-lived, dysfunctional startup that had somehow managed to purloin some investment from a couple of gullible billionaires.

During that time, I attended plenty of meetings where words such as DISRUPT and IDEATE were bandied around – without anyone actually knowing what they meant.

Finally, I realized that what they meant didn’t matter; just that they made the person saying them sound as if they knew what they meant.

Anyway, I digress. Let’s talk about today’s Strands. Despite my familiarity with CORPORATESPEAK I struggled to get started and took a couple of hints.

ALIGN and PIVOT got me moving, but I found it difficult to get all of my buzzwords in a row.

Incidentally, if you are ever in a meeting and you hear someone say PIVOT then you are in big trouble. It usually means the company is pivoting towards bankruptcy.

Some Spotify fans are still experiencing a major app crashing problem – and there’s still no sign of a fix

  • Some Spotify users say they're still experiencing app crashes
  • The problem was first acknowledged by Spotify on Tuesday November 18
  • Spotify support says it is "aware that this issue is still ongoing"

A curious Spotify bug that causes the app to crash is continuing to affect many users, over two days after it was first reported and acknowledged by Spotify.

We first reported the issue on Tuesday November 18, when a thread on Spotify's 'Ongoing Issues' community page started to gain hundreds of votes and comments. Strangely, the problems weren't confined to one platform, with users across iOS, Android and Mac all reporting a similar issue.

Initially, it seemed that the app crashes were related to listening to podcasts, as those posts gained the largest number of upvotes (indicating that others were experiencing the same thing). However, more recent posts say that the app simply "starts and closes within a fraction of a second" and is unrelated to podcasts.

It's possible that there are several Spotify issues here being reported in the same thread, which is titled "app is crashing when starting a podcast". Either way, the latest message from Spotify's forum mod is that "our teams are aware that this issue is still ongoing, and are continuing to investigate".

This is a change from Spotify's line from two days ago, where it said “we’re happy to say that this should now be fixed". That statement is still the latest one on the Spotify Status account on X. I asked Spotify for further comment on the issue and it said it didn't have any further updates at this time.

What can you do?

iPhone smartphone screen showing Spotify Music App logo next to two AirPods

(Image credit: Shutterstock / Yalcin Sonat)

If you've been hit by this issue, the only piece of official advice is to make a clean install of the Spotify app. Spotify says that "some users have noted that this helps solve the issue", but others in the thread's replies say that even this hasn't done the trick.

Doing a clean install doesn't come without its drawbacks – you'll need to redownload any downloaded music and podcasts for offline listening and the settings will also return to their defaults. However, your playlists, likes and more will be kept intact, because (unlike downloaded music) they aren't stored locally.

If you want to give the clean install a try, the process is slightly different across platforms. On Android, go to your phone's Settings > Apps > choose Spotify > tap Storage / Storage & cache memory > go to Clear storage / Clear data > Clear cache. Then return to the previous screen and tap Uninstall.

On iOS, instead open the Spotify app, then tap your profile photo in the top-left. Then go to Settings and privacy > Data-saving and offline > Storage, then click on Clear cache. Now go to your phone's Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Spotify > Offload the app, then confirm and tap Delete app. Reboot your iPhone and then go the App Store to reinstall Spotify. For other platforms, check out Spotify's official process for those.

Hopefully, that'll do the trick, but it still hasn't hasn't worked for many people, according to recent forum posts. One from today says "I've tried a clean reinstall on my iphone (iOS 18.6.2) and the app still doesn't load. The Spotify logo appears but then crashes."

With many reporting that they're now on day three of not being able to use their Spotify Premium accounts, it seems a further backend fix is needed. We'll be chasing up Spotify for an update, but in the meantime let us know if you're also affected in the comments below.

Google Maps is adding 4 new features to help you navigate the holiday season

  • Look out for these four new features in Google Maps
  • They cover exploring places, EV charging, and reviews
  • Some Google Maps holiday trend data has also been shared

The holiday season is always a busy time for shopping and traveling, and Google wants to help: it's adding four new features to Google Maps that cover places to go, EV charging, and a way you can give back to the locations you visit.

First up is what Google is calling "insider tips" built with Google Gemini. The feature acts like a local guide – or rather, an AI that's scraped comments from local guides – to give you detailed information on a place that goes beyond the official listing.

Some examples Google gives are the best ways to book reservations, what the dress code might be, where you should park, and any secret items that might be on the menu – all delivered in Google Maps for you through Gemini. You'll find these tips on place cards, and they're appearing now for US users on Android and iOS.

The trusty Explore tab in Google Maps is getting updated too, with "trending and popular restaurants, activities and sights near you", pulled from sources like OpenTable and Lonely Planet. The idea is you can get some helpful pointers on where to visit next, any time, and this is rolling out globally across this month for Android and iOS.

EV charging and reviewing

Google Maps Explore tab

The Explore tab now includes more recommendations about local spots (Image credit: Google)

Our third new feature is the ability to search for "EV chargers" in Google Maps, and get AI-powered predictions about how busy they'll be when you get there, based on "historical and real-time" charger data. In theory, it should mean you don't spend ages getting to a charger only to find long queues there.

This builds on several EV improvements we've seen in Google Maps over recent months and years, and improves on the current system that only shows you whether or not a charger is currently free. Google says this will start rolling out on Android Auto and cars with Google built in across the world from next week.

Lastly, you can now choose a separate nickname and picture for your reviews on Google Maps – so if you want to gift a five-star review somewhere, you don't have to use your real name. This goes live this month globally, on Android, iOS, and the web.

In addition Google has also posted some holiday data trends for Google Maps: these trends give you the busiest times for traveling, shopping, and visiting the post office, so you can try your best to avoid the busiest crowds.
