The answers to today's Strands, game #608, are…

  • DELICIOUS
  • SCRUMPTIOUS
  • FLAVORFUL
  • DELECTABLE
  • SPANGRAM: GOOD TASTE
  • My rating: Hard
  • My score: 1 hint

There were only four words and a spangram in today’s game but we had to work hard to find them; well, I did anyway!

After finding half a dozen non-game words and mistakenly thinking our task was to find words associated with good manners, I took a hint, with DELICIOUS setting me on my way.

It took me a lot of attempts at different spelling, but I eventually found SCRUMPTIOUS – a word whose most famous appearance is in the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang song Truly Scrumptious – before the far easier FLAVORFUL and DELECTABLE.

First off, what a treat to have a Halloween-themed board with orange and purple highlights and a spooky results grid. In the words of Strands, “Well done!”

This game was very much a case of trick or hint for me. I started off well, seeing SKULL and then FEMUR, but after getting these and the third most obvious bone, FIBULA, I ran aground.

Fortunately, I found plenty of non-game words in the pumpkin patch and hints gave me ULNA and RADIUS and after getting the spangram I was able to unearth STERNUM and HUMERUS.

The Starbucks app, Minecraft, and Xbox Network are all down –here's what we know

Just a bit over a week after a major AWS outage, it seems something else is brewing –and not in a good way. Starbucks is currently experiencing an outage that has has completely taken down mobile ordering. Meaning, if you want a Cold Brew, an Iced Chai Latte, or even a warmed piece of banana bread, you'll need to chat with a barista in store.

At the same time that 'We're sorry for the inconvenience' hit the Starbucks app, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, and Minecraft are experiencing major blips – see our live blog here. Of course, impacted folks are all going to Downdetector, where a number of services are seeing a spike.

But since we're coffee lovers, we're spinning up a live blog to track this outage affecting Starbucks as well as the issues hitting Xbox and Minecraft, and the team at TechRadar is checking whether any other services are affected.

Starbucks is at least being transparent with the issue

Starbucks outage

Unlike some other companies or services, which tend to take a while to confirm issues or outages, Starbucks is at least being transparent. As soon as you open the Starbucks app on an Android or iOS device, you'll see a pop-up that starts with "We're sorry for the inconvenience" and explains that mobile ordering is down.

A look at Down Detector right now

Here's a look at Down Detector right now, which might show that things are improving, even though a vast swath of services is down.

While these might not be connected, the reports of issues and outages with Starbucks, Minecraft, and the Xbox Network do align with reports on Microsoft Azure. Although, we can't confirm that Starbucks uses the Azure cloud. While Starbucks is showing a drop-off, Xbox and Minecraft are still on the rise.

Down Detector 10:29

Reported issues with Minecraft are still high

While Starbucks outage reports are dropping, Down Detector is currently showing Minecraft at 6,670 and Xbox Network at 2,770 reported outages.

We can't load the Xbox Support site

Xbox Support page is unresponsive

Considering Azure referenced DNS issues – see our live blog dedicated to those issues here – it's not surprising that Xbox's official support site and the status page are unresponsive and won't load at all.

Folks aren't happy with Starbucks or Xbox being down

As we typically see with outages, impacted folks are taking to social to voice there frustration, and that goes for Starbucks and Xbox.

While I still can't get the Xbox support page to load, the web storefront does load, though it's missing a few parts. Images aren't rendering, and spacing is a bit off across the board.

Currently, Down Detector shows 3,123 reported outages with the Xbox Network as of 1:06 PM ET.

Fortnite acknowledges something is impacting players on Xbox Cloud

Well, we haven't heard from Xbox officially, but Fortnite basically just confirmed it for them. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the @FortniteStatus account states, "We are looking into login issues players on Xbox Cloud might be experiencing."

Further, Fortnite is working on a fix and promises to keep us updated; that's good news on both fronts.

Strands stumped me today, for the second day in succession.

Fortunately, I managed to find plenty of non-game words, including the 9-letter “reception”. If I’d have looked harder at this stage I might have seen OPTION sooner. Instead, it took me a hint before I realized what the theme was.

After my initial triumph I took another hint and thank goodness I did – because DRUTHERS is one of those words that only exist in New York Times puzzle games and Stephen Fry novels.

The answers to today's Quordle, game #1374, are…

  • BROOD
  • DITTY
  • DEFER
  • OPERA

Some games you roar through with confidence, others you take your time over – and this was definitely an example of the latter.

Once again, the Quordle memory bank helped me to see DEFER and DITTY more quickly than I might have done, and so too did seeing common combinations such as BRO, although with just a D and O and an R for the first word I did come close to a wild guess of “fjord”.

When the theme goes completely over your head Strands can be so difficult/impossible.

I’ve never felt closer to giving up than I did in this game, but fortunately it was easy to spot dozens of non-game words – most of which you could add the letters E-R to in order to get another non-game word.

Even with all these hints I still struggled, especially over the spangram.

Some post-game googling revealed that the spangram is the title of a Disney TV show and the “Nevermore!” theme is a riff on the Alan Edgar Poe poem The Raven, but if I’m honest I’m still puzzled. Completed it, though.

When I first started playing Qourdle I got caught out by the word RALPH – it is not exactly the first word you think of, especially if you are UK-based like me, where we would associate it solely with a name.

Now, though, it’s firmly lodged in my five-letter word memory bank, along with the equally common, but less obscure, SOLAR.

I struggled with today’s search, mainly because I got the wrong idea about what “The write stuff” was referring to.

After getting plenty of non-game words I found ERASER and REFILL as I circled around the game, and the penny finally dropped. Seeing the word “pencil” and it not turning pale blue was a puzzler. It took me getting a hint word – GRAPHITE – and then having only the spangram left on the board for me to find it.

Until today I had never thought about the wood pencils are made from, but I have since learned that CEDARWOOD was preferred as it sharpens easily.

However, I have also discovered the raging debate over the future of pencils due to the unsustainability of cedar and the threat of plastic and springs.

This game wasn’t really “tricky”, but it felt appropriate seeing as we are in spooky season and today’s spangram was WIZARDRY.

In fact this round was very light on tricks. Remember when we had the rainbow-themed edition of strands with each word highlighted in a different color? I was expecting something similar here, maybe the words WIZARDRY vanishing before our very eyes? Or at least a dash of purple and yellow.

This wasn’t my only disappointment. I’m sure I wasn’t the only person to spot “Dracula” first, only to discover that not only did it not feature in the game but it also didn’t qualify as a non-game word. Curses on all your hearses.

The theme was a little less cryptic than usual today, so I immediately went searching for AUTUMN. Rather than buried under a pile of leaves it was easily visible and a simple left to right.

This job done, I went about finding the most obvious words before looking for the more obscure ones; well, obscure to me at least. I doubt I would have thought of CORN if it was not encompassed by PUMPKINS, while ORCHARDS took me much longer than it should have.

I once went on a FOLIAGE coach tour when I visited Boston some years ago and the guide was so minimal with his descriptions of the trees that when we passed a particularly attractive display he would simply shout “color”, which he did on and off for the following three hours.

I guess he started out giving descriptions of everything, but over time realized all people wanted was a warning of when to take a photo. I hear his voice in my head every year when the leaves turn. Color!
