The theme “All rise” immediately had me thinking we were searching for terms connected to judges, juries and trials. I couldn’t see any search words, so I used a hint to begin the hunt. BAIL didn’t exactly open up the board – but seeing COURTROOM did.

After a few easy editions, this Strands was much more of a challenge – OBJECTION was my final word, but it took a while to unpick the anagram and then connect the letters.

Today’s spangram – YOUR HONOR – is also the title of a TV show that has an excellent opening episode about a crime, a compromised judge, and the manufacture of an ALIBI. The jury is out on the rest of the series.

Today’s spangram was like an oversized SCRUNCHIE taking up a huge chunk of the puzzle.

Unlike bobby pins, today’s words all describe hair ornaments. I struggled to see BARRETTE, as this is known as a hair slide in the UK, but the rest were easy to spot.

As the father of two girls I am fully aware of the world of HAIR ACCESSORIES and have been a willing model/victim to my daughter’s experimentation. It's an activity, along with painting my nails, both of them found utterly hysterical.

It's also the reason why I relate to Buzz Lightyear and the scene in the first Toy Story movie where he is stolen by Sid’s sister and becomes Mrs Nesbitt for the purposes of a doll's tea party – “One minute you’re saving the galaxy, and suddenly you find yourself supping down darjeeling with Marie Antoinette and her little sister”. That’s fatherhood.

I’ll be honest, ETUDE is a word I only know because it’s featured in Quordle before – it’s a piece of music designed to test and improve a music student’s technical skills. Otherwise it would have been a very long time before I’d have gotten my penultimate answer today.

I knew that my final word was likely one with a rare letter, as I had so few options left but it took me a while to find RAJAH (an Indian prince).

Anyone interested in learning the rules of SOCCER should seek out England’s official 1990 World Cup song World In Motion by New Order, which features a rap by the country's most talented MIDFIELDER of the era.

“You’ve got to hold and give,” John Barnes explains. “Defend and attack, there’s only one way to beat them, get round the back.”

There are of course other crucial elements to association football, but essentially it’s passing, tacking, and shooting at the goal all performed by the positions featured in today’s word search.

Once you’ve mastered the basics you can then learn about the offside rule and its many sub-clauses and exceptions. That should take a year or so, by which time you’ll be ready to watch the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and USA.

Apple’s Logic Pro for iPad and Mac can now capture your performances even when you forget to hit record

• Flashback Capture will handle the recording even if you don't start it
• Stem Splitters gains more functionality, and a bit of Apple Intelligence arrives in this creative tool

Apple’s been on a roll with Logic Pro on the Mac and iPad – in 2024, the tech giant ushered in several AI-powered features, including an impressive Stem Splitter, and now, for the first major update of 2025, you could say it’s turning things up to 11.

Leading the improvements for both the Mac and iPad is a new tool that will save your brilliant take, even if you forget to hit the record button. Beyond that, Stem Splitter is an even more powerful tool, and Apple Intelligence is arriving within the long-standing Notepad functionality.

So let’s start with Flashback Capture – this is a renaming of ‘Capture Recording’ and an expansion of its capabilities. Whether you’re a pro at Logic or maybe just upgrading from GarageBand, you’ve likely experienced this when you start strumming on a guitar, sing a few chords, or play another instrument – greatness strikes, but you forget to hit record. This feature has the potential to be a lifesaver, as it automatically captures your performance before you hit record.

With the press of a button, you can then make it appear on your timeline. As part of its rebranding, Flashback Capture now works with any MIDI source – or, more accurately, with any audio source. It also works if you play something while listening to another piece of your timeline – when inspiration strikes, regardless of whether you start recording, Flashback Capture kind of saves the day. This update is now available for Mac with Logic Pro 11.2 and for iPad with Logic Pro version 2.2, both of which are now available.

The ever-popular Stem Splitter, which utilizes AI to analyze an audio file and separate the instruments or vocals into individual tracks, is receiving an enhancement. Previously, it could separate vocals, bass, and drums into separate tracks while placing other potential elements into a track called “other.”

Now, Apple is adding the ability to recognize piano and guitar, while also promising better audio fidelity. This should be pretty helpful, though if you have a horn section in your band, those wonderful brass instruments will still live in the ‘other’ track. There will also be presets to pick from, including a cappella, instrumental with vocals, or just instrumental. Stem Splitter will still only be available on Macs and iPads with Apple Silicon inside, specifically the M1 chip or newer.

While there is some AI and machine learning, Apple is also incorporating Writing Tools integration. Essentially, the Notepad tool inside Logic Pro will now have a dedicated button for Writing Tools, allowing you to leverage Apple’s own models or ChatGPT’s smarts to help flesh out lyrics, potentially.

If you’re keen on new sound packs, Logic Pro on the Mac is gaining Magnetic Imperfections and Tosin Abasi, while the iPad version gets the brand-new Dancefloor Rush. The latter here offers alchemy patches and hundreds of loops, all themed around drum and bass. It sounds a lot like summer pop and should be fun.

Lastly, for Logic Pro on iPad, Learn MIDI is arriving and will help you get the hang of these physical control devices with minimal previous experience. Essentially, you can plug a compatible MIDI device into your iPad via USB-C and then assign a function in Logic Pro to a physical control, such as a knob. You’ll be able to customize the experience to your exact needs, and as they evolve, you can adjust your setup accordingly.

The best news, though, and keeping with Apple’s past enhancements to the software suite, is that if you’ve already bought Logic Pro for the Mac or subscribe to Logic Pro for iPad, you’ll get all these new features for free.

Apple’s also not increasing the cost for either. Logic Pro for the Mac is still a one-time purchase of $199.99 / £199.99 / AU$ 299.99 and Logic Pro for iPad is $5.99 / £4.99 / AU$7.99 or annually at $49.99 / £49.99 / AU$59.99.

Additionally, you can still get a one-month free trial on the iPad or a 90-day free trial on the Mac for Logic.

Google Photos just got a new AI editor – and it brings the Pixel's best tricks to your Android or iOS phone

Google Photos has now been with us for 10 years, and Google is marking the occasion by redesigning the app's photo editor, and adding some of the AI-powered trickery that was previously exclusive to the best Pixel phones.

The editor revamp collects together some key features while adding new ones: choose to edit a photo and you'll see a number of suggested enhancements pop up. Tap on someone or something in an image, and even more suggestions appear, such as the option to move the selection somewhere else in the picture, or blur the background behind it.

Tools that have previously been exclusive to the Google Pixel 9 series are now going to be available for everyone. They include Auto Frame for getting suggested crops for a shot, and Reimagine, which works like a mini AI image generator to let you introduce new elements or edit existing ones with text prompts.

Other examples provided by Google include getting suggestions as to how to enhance a particular area of a photo, and changing the look of the sky using the Reimagine tool – so you can turn a cloudy day into a sunny one, if you want to. The redesigned editor reaches Android next month, with iOS following "later this year".

Away from the redesigned editor, the Google Photos apps are also making it easier to share photos with other people. You'll now be able to do this using a QR code – so you can just pass the code on to other people or post it publicly for anyone to use.

Google has also used the occasion to share some tips and tricks for using its photos app. These aren't new but you might not have been aware of them: like the way you can tap Places on the Collections tab to see your photos spread out across locations, and focus on pictures and videos from particular spots.

Another feature highlighted by Google is the way you can use natural language in searches, whether it's "me in a blue shirt" or "at the beach" – and Google's AI will find what you're looking for. Just tap the Search button down in the lower right corner, then put your query in at the top.

According to Google, since its launch 10 years ago, more than 9 trillion photos and videos have been stored on the service, and more than 1.5 billion people are using it monthly – making 210 edits each month between them. Personally though, I think it's still a shame Google took away unlimited storage for Pixel owners.

After getting BUTTERFLY, MOTH and WASP in succession, I thought we were looking for a spangram describing flying minibeasts. Instead it was the much more straightforward INSECT

A six-letter spangram is very off-brand for Strands these days, but this game's ability to keep players guessing is impressive. That said, this was one of our easier days.

I know many people like them, but the sight of a DRAGONFLY freaks me out a bit as I’ve got an irrational fear that they’re going to fly in my mouth. So, whenever I see one I clamp my mouth shut. I guess I’m the freak, not them.

That said, they do breathe out of their rectums, so there is that too. I don't want something that breathes out its rectum in my mouth, thanks.

Strands is the NYT's not-so-new-any-more word game, following Wordle and Connections. It's now a fully fledged member of the NYT's games stable that has been running for a year and which can be played on the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

WhatsApp just finally launched its much anticipated iPad app

Meta is known for offering many apps, but not many of them support the iPad. That is changing now, though, at least for one that makes messaging and voice calls across the globe a breeze.

That’s right – WhatsApp is now full-sized on the iPad as the most recent build that hit Apple’s App Store brings support for Apple's tablet. It’s been a long time coming, and WhatsApp is even beating Instagram to the punch.

While the release notes for the latest build, 25.16.81, don’t mention anything special, this fresh piece of code does enable support for the iPad. Once you’ve updated, it’ll stretch and fill the screen appropriately on an entry-level iPad, the iPad mini, or both sizes of the iPad Pro or iPad Air.

You'll be able to respond to messages, share your iPadOS screen on a call, and video chat with up to 32 other folks. WhatsApp even released a blog post detailing the anticipated arrival.

It’s still the classic messaging experience that WhatsApp has offered, but there is one key change from the iPhone version. WhatsApp now features a two-column layout, allowing you to view contacts' names and group chats on the left and the messages for the selected chat on the right. So, it's quite similar to how Apple’s own Messages app utilizes the larger screen real estate.

Perhaps even better news for iPad fans, the team at Meta has baked in support for multitasking on the iPad. This way, you can split the screen to have WhatsApp on one side or have it be the floating third app. That should make it easier to respond to messages and keep an eye on larger group chats.

The app also works with the Magic Keyboard and the Apple Pencil, allowing you to use the latter to scribble a message and send it within WhatsApp.

Now, a WhatsApp app for iPad has been rumored for quite some time, but the anticipation built up earlier this week when the app responded to a post on X (formerly Twitter) with a set of looking eyes. Less than a day later, the app is here, and it has us wondering what Meta might drop on the iPad next.

Arguably, Instagram is another app within Meta's wheelhouse that iPad users want support for, so WhatsApp gaining support hopefully shows that it's also in the works.

The WhatsApp team also promises that this is just the start of its journey on iPad, and is looking forward to feedback from users.

Microsoft Edge is now getting more AI, and I’d be surprised if an even bigger push for more Copilot isn’t just around the corner

• It’s also rolling out an ability to trigger a web search to happen with Copilot rather than Bing
• Moves in testing to have Copilot take over the New Tab Page still appear to be in the pipeline

Microsoft Edge is getting more Copilot, with the AI assistant coming to the New Tab Page (or NTP) in a more prominent way.

The NTP is what you see in the web browser when you open up a new tab, serving as a place to start for exploring what you might want to do in Edge – which will usually, but not always, be a web search.

However, rather than that traditional query in the search box (which fires up a Bing search, unsurprisingly), Microsoft would prefer you to use Copilot, as there’s an icon for the AI assistant right next to said web search option.

Clicking that icon brings up Copilot on the web, ready for your query, but with the latest update for Edge version 136 (which was deployed earlier this month), Microsoft is rolling out a fuller integration of the AI in the NTP.

Windows Latest reports that Microsoft explains in the release notes for the update to Edge that: “Starting at the end of May 2025, users may see suggested work and productivity-related Copilot prompts by their search box on the NTP page.”

Those suggested prompts are efforts along the lines of ‘get advice’ or ‘write a first draft’ which invoke Copilot to achieve the indicated task.

Microsoft further notes that some Edge users may also see the Copilot icon in the search box, and when clicked this triggers the current search query, but sends it to Copilot rather than having Bing resolve it.

In short, Copilot is slowly gaining a grip on the New Tab Page, although the mentioned capabilities are part of what Microsoft calls a “controlled feature rollout,” and I’d imagine this will be a fairly slow and tentative affair. I don’t have this feature yet on my Edge browser, and neither does Windows Latest.

The company will likely want to conduct this deployment at a leisurely pace because there are some Windows 11 users who are wary of seeing AI creep into more corners of the OS and its various apps, which is certainly a goal Microsoft’s intent on pursuing. So, moving slowly and regularly taking the temperature of feedback is likely to be the way forward for Microsoft.

More AI is likely coming to Microsoft’s browser, though, in the form of the Edge Copilot Mode spotted by Windows Latest (hidden in the flags menu, as an experimental feature in Edge).

This appears to be Microsoft’s plan that’s already been seen in testing, whereby the New Tab Page becomes far more Copilot-focused – read more about that here (and see the above screenshot for a glimpse of what this might look like). It also dumps the MSN feed in favor of Copilot, which I feel is a good trade-off (though your opinion on that may vary, of course).

A second part of this Copilot Mode may be a less popular addition, namely so-called ‘context clues’ that tap into the web page you’re visiting, and your web history, to allow the AI to provide better and more personal responses.

A fair few privacy red flags are appearing at this point, but we don’t know how (or even if) this feature will be implemented – though it certainly appears to be allowing Copilot to access your browsing history. As such, it’s surely going to be an optional (and opt-in) capability, if any of this is realized with Edge.

Remember, all this is still in testing, save for the changes to the NTP that Microsoft has confirmed are now rolling out with Edge v136.

A really difficult round for me today, with the letters falling awkwardly. It was probably the longest I’ve taken to complete Quordle this year. My first two correct words – RANGE and RADAR – were easy; the last two far from it.

I struggled with today’s Strands, after a great start seeing HANDSHAKE and SALUTE immediately and then the GESTURES spangram.

A hint gave me SHRUG, but I struggled to see NAMASTE among the seven letters before me. I think this may be due to thinking that namaste was just a greeting rather than a gesture – although thinking about it, I realize it’s something that's never said without the palms coming together at the chest and a slight bow of the head.

Meanwhile, KOWTOW is a word that really should be used more commonly to describe political discourse in various countries around the globe – once a prominent part of Chinese rituals where underlings would suffer the indignity of submission, now kowtowing goes on everywhere.

Organizing the letters that made up REORGANIZE was a far from easy task. I spent a good couple of minutes staring at the jumble of letters that remained at the end of today’s puzzle and pondered abandoning ship before finally seeing the magic word.

The first word I got today was SELL, after a hint, so it wasn’t obvious what we were searching for until I found DONATE and LABEL.

Had I seen DECLUTTER sooner I may have gotten it done a bit quicker – leaving me time to do some SPRING CLEANING of my own.

It is always amazing the many different ways Strands has found to hide the Spangram, with this edition being a rare snake that begins and ends on the same side. Bravo.
