Quordle today – hints and answers for Monday, September 16 (game #966)

Quordle was one of the original Wordle alternatives and is still going strong now nearly 1,000 games later. It offers a genuine challenge, though, so read on if you need some Quordle hints today – or scroll down further for the answers.

Enjoy playing word games? You can also check out my Wordle today, NYT Connections today and NYT Strands today pages for hints and answers for those puzzles.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about Quordle today is below, so don't read on if you don't want to know the answers.

Quordle today (game #966) - hint #1 - Vowels

How many different vowels are in Quordle today?

The number of different vowels in Quordle today is 4*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Quordle today (game #966) - hint #2 - repeated letters

Do any of today's Quordle answers contain repeated letters?

The number of Quordle answers containing a repeated letter today is 2.

Quordle today (game #966) - hint #3 - uncommon letters

Do the letters Q, Z, X or J appear in Quordle today?

• No. None of Q, Z, X or J appear among today's Quordle answers.

Quordle today (game #966) - hint #4 - starting letters (1)

Do any of today's Quordle puzzles start with the same letter?

The number of today's Quordle answers starting with the same letter is 0.

If you just want to know the answers at this stage, simply scroll down. If you're not ready yet then here's one more clue to make things a lot easier:

Quordle today (game #966) - hint #5 - starting letters (2)

What letters do today's Quordle answers start with?

• R

• S

• F

• U

Right, the answers are below, so DO NOT SCROLL ANY FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM.

Quordle today (game #966) - the answers

The answers to today's Quordle, game #966, are…

  • ROUGE
  • SWAMP
  • FUGUE
  • UNDUE

You'll have found today's Quordle to be a lot easier if you included a U in an early guess – because there are five of them in this game, including two in FUGUE and UNDUE. In fact, it's a vowel-heavy Quordle in general: 10 of the 20 letters are A, E, O or U (there are no 'I's today), so assuming you did the sensible thing and played all of them early on you'll have been fine.

Or at least you should have been – because the letters aside it's not necessarily easy. FUGUE is an uncommon word, there are a couple of repeated letters on the board and ROUGE could have been ROGUE just as easily. A real mixed bag.

Another day, another easy Strands puzzle. Come on, NYT – give us something tougher! Admittedly, the theme clue of 'What a stud!' left things open, and maybe I'd have struggled a little more if I hadn't uncovered CHEEK by accident when hunting for words. But once I had that it was clear what I needed to do. Completing it was then a simple matter of searching the word grid for parts of the body. Easy.

Thank heavens for Mad Men. I devoured the brilliant AMC show during lockdown, having somehow missed it when it originally aired about a decade before, and without it I probably would have found today's Strands to be far, far tougher. As it was, I remembered lead character Don Draper's favorite drink and therefore the spangram OLDFASHIONED.

Not that I knew the ingredients as such – but I remembered enough that finding the likes of BITTERS, WATER, CHERRY and SUGAR wasn't an impossible task. It might have been without WHISKEY, but fortunately the theme clue of 'On the rocks' had set me on the path to searching for that, making the whole thing more manageable than it would otherwise have been.

  • CHUTE

You don't hear the word WIMPY often, do you? But here it is in today's Quordle, lurking within those squares and waiting to trip you up. In fact, all four of today's words are potentially difficult – there are repeated letters in ESSAY and GENRE, while CHUTE is another fairly uncommon word – but I wouldn't place it among the most difficult overall. There are none of those really obscure letters, for starters – you know the ones, X and Q and Z and J – and plenty of vowels scattered throughout. File this was under 'middling'.

  • My rating: Easy

Here's yet another easy Strands puzzle to get your day off to a good start. And frankly, it's been a while since we've had a truly difficult one.

Today's theme is WESTERNS as per the spangram, a concept that was heavily teased by the theme clue of 'Boots and saddles' and confirmed the second I uncovered COWBOY. After that it was simply a question of hunting through those letters like a prospector sifting for gold… None were too hard to find, and I completed this one in about five minutes flat.

  • LANE

  • BOULEVARD
  • SPANGRAM: THOROUGHFARE

  • My rating: Moderate
  • My score: 3 hints

I can't work out whether today's Strands is difficult or not. I found it tough – but that might just be me. After all, the concept – names for THOROUGHFAREs, as the spangram would have it – is simple, but on the flip side the spangram itself is really difficult. I mean, when was the last time you used that word to refer to a STREET or ROAD or LANE?

Beyond that, I just couldn't think of any roads beyond the three obvious ones mentioned above. BOULEVARD is not a common term in the UK, where I am, and HIGHWAY is very rarely used here – so that didn't help. But I should have found AVENUE, and ultimately I think this was more about my failings than the puzzle's absolute difficulty.

It's a long, long time since I was child, but it's not quite so long ago that my kids were more likely to be found playing with SLIME or a PUZZLE than they were to be fixated on TikTok or Netflix as they generally are these days. Not that I think you'd need first-hand experience to solve this Strands game – because it's a rather simple one.

The theme clue set the tone: the keen-eyed among you will have spotted that it was 'Play-with words', rather than 'Play with words'. That hyphen was all-important, signifying that the answers here would be things you can play with. After that, it was merely a case of looking for the obvious solutions. PUZZLE, with its two Zs, stood out right away, as did TRUCK (I always look for C and K in close proximity as a way into a word). The spangram was fairly obvious too, and is always the case the puzzle got easier as I uncovered each word.

Quordle today – hints and answers for Tuesday, September 10 (game #960)

If this is the 'Classic' Quordle by difficulty, then spare a thought for anyone attempting the new 'Extreme' variety. I only solved classic on the last guess, tripped up along the way by the likes of SEIZE (with its two Es and one Z) and ASSET (two Ss).

As it happened, I decided to attempt Extreme too today, and did manage to solve that – but only after a rollercoaster game that saw my secure the victory on the last attempt. And I was never playing within my comfort zone, that's for sure.

On the plus side, the Daily Sequence version of the game was relatively simple today – which was some relief after the other two Quordles.

Quordle appears to have had one of its periodic leveling up transformations, with the main game now split into three: Daily Chill, Daily Classic and Daily Extreme. These give different numbers of guesses and a variable level of difficulty, as you'd expect – and I can confirm that Extreme is very tough indeed.

For now I'm going to continue to focus on the Classic variety, which today was relatively tricky with a repeated T in THETA and a couple of fairly uncommon words.

NYT Strands today — hints, answers and spangram for Monday, September 9 (game #190)

The answers to today's Strands, game #190, are…

  • BOCCE
  • CROQUET
  • CORNHOLE
  • HORSESHOES
  • BADMINTON
  • SPANGRAM: LAWNGAMES

  • My rating: Moderate
  • My score: 2 hints

Is it just me or was this a really random selection of LAWNGAMES, as the spangram would have it? I've never heard of BOCCE, but I now gather it is similar to bowls or boules… and absolutely doesn't have to be (and often isn't) played on a lawn. BADMINTON is an Olympic sport that is often played on a hard court or indoors. CORNHOLE and HORSESHOES probably fit the bill, as does CROQUET, but it's all a bit odd. Of course I could be missing something; I'm not an expert and maybe there is some kind of official designation for what is a lawn game and what isn't. Who knows…

Either way, I had to solve this one mostly by trial and error, which never makes for the most enjoyable of Strands experience. Hopefully tomorrow will be more satisfying.

The answers to today's Quordle, game #958, are…

  • TEASE
  • AGATE
  • PRIDE
  • PLATE

The puzzle-setters at Merriam-Webster gave us an easy Quordle today: two of the words end in the same ATE format, meaning that once you had one you had an advantage with the other. The fact that two also begin with P may have helped too; once you had PLATE you'd therefore have had an advantage with both AGATE and PRIDE.

Against that, AGATE is itself a difficult word for Quordle: it's relatively obscure, contains a repeated A, and also has a near-neighbor in ABATE. But I had enough spare guesses that I wasn't unduly stressed and was able to solve today's game in eight moves.

The answers to today's Quordle, game #957, are…

  • LASSO
  • TILDE
  • BUNCH
  • PRONG

Today's Quordle is packed with tricky words. BUNCH is a bit of a nightmare for a Wordle-style word game, on account of there being so many similarly spelled options: PUNCH, HUNCH, LUNCH, MUNCH and BUNCH itself, meaning you may have needed to play a narrowing-down word in order to identify the correct one. That's what I had to do, with HIMBO (sorry, but it was accepted!) being my choice; this gave me the B I needed.

But that aside, TILDE was tricky simply by virtue of being an uncommon word, and LASSO on account of having a repeated letter and also just being spelled wrongly. Go on, say it – it should be spelled LASOO, surely? Or maybe that's just me. Anyway, I got there in the end, but it was a struggle all the way.

  • NIGHT

There are a couple of potential complications to look out for in today's Quordle – repeated Ls in LOCAL and repeated Os in WOOLY – but it's not a horribly difficult puzzle. In fact, the word I struggled most with was NIGHT, which has no repeated letters and which is an incredibly common word. But for some reason, I always fail to spot it for ages, possibly because the GHT combination at the end is fairly unusual.

Anyway, my start words came up trumps to give me plenty of letters for all four of the answers, so my fledgling streak was never under any real threat.

The answers to today's Strands, game #187, are…

  • PORRIDGE
  • BEDS
  • CHAIRS
  • MAMA
  • BABY
  • PAPA
  • HARD
  • SOFT
  • SPANGRAM: THREEBEARS

  • My rating: Moderate
  • My score: Perfect

A good Strands puzzle can itself be a lot like the Goldilocks and the Three Bears story that provides the theme for today's game: not too easy, not too hard, but just right.

And by that measure, this is a good Strands puzzle, because it sits comfortably in that middle range, presenting a challenge for sure, but not an insurmountable one.

The theme clue – that aforementioned just right – provided a relatively obtuse hint to the concept, but fortunately I spotted PORRIDGE very early on and knew then what was needed here. But actually finding the words was a different matter. It's a long time since I've read the story, obviously, and while I recalled some bits – BEDS and CHAIRS were easy – I got a bit stuck after that.

Fortunately, placing the THREEBEARS spangram made the process a lot simpler, and I was able to fill in the remaining answers after a little thought and a lot of searching.

Boost your productivity with a powerful suite of AI-powered tools from Wondershare PDFelement 11

We’ve all been there. Staring at a computer screen with a fresh PDF file sent to us via a message or email, and no way to interact with it. You might be able to open it with a built-in tool on your computer, but making any edits or saving changes is certainly going to be out of the question. There is no need for an exhaustive search for multiple editing and saving solutions to fulfill your PDF-related needs. Wondershare PDFelement 11 can help unlock your productivity and meet your professional and educational PDF file needs. PDFelement 11.0, the latest update, can even enhance your workflow with powerful and supportive AI features.

Powerful enough for businesses, lightweight enough for students, smart enough for everybody

PDF software tends to err in two directions. Either the software is designed to be lightweight, to the point, and snappy so that it is easy and inexpensive enough for students to get the hang of, or it’s bogged down with convoluted features that make using it a logistical nightmare even for the most experienced professionals. PDFelement walks a fine line between providing smart and flexible features without bogging the software down. The user experience is intuitive, making it ideal for users across all PDF-handling skill levels, and it offers enhanced AI features for students and professionals alike that boost productivity and accessibility.

There is nothing worse than turning in a huge report that you’ve invested a lot of time and effort into, only to realize it’s riddled with glaring errors. PDFelement 11’s AI-powered Grammar Checker can prevent that scenario from playing out, significantly increasing the accuracy and readability of your PDFs. You can even crank up the effectiveness of your PDF with AI-powered knowledge cards, which make it possible to highlight key points, important tags, provide a brief overview, or otherwise highlight vital information in your document. PDFelement’s Chat with Multiple PDFs feature further builds on this, making it possible to generate a multi-document summarization of your work (complete with a Q&A!) with the power of AI. Providing a summary and Q&A can help boost the reading efficiency of your document, further improving your productivity.

QR Code scanning is further bolstered by PDFelement’s cloud-based platform. It’s never been easier to edit, share, and manage your PDF collection. The right software for the job, wherever it takes you

Today's students and professionals often work in hybrid environments, splitting time between home, remote spaces, and occasional in-office or in-person settings. Our files need to be able to travel with us no matter where we work or study. The software that manages those files needs to be able to provide a suite of features that can get the job done without sending us on a search to find multiple software products where one will do. PDFelement 11 is that do-it-all software. It is designed to be smart and approachable without being cumbersome.

PDFelement is not just an innovative, feature-rich PDF solution. It’s an affordable one, as well. PDFelement 11 is over 50% less costly than the market leaders, all while still providing productivity-boosting, AI-powered features that make getting your work done efficiently and professionally.
