The answers to today's Quordle, game #981, are…

  • FRILL
  • MADLY
  • GRANT
  • NYLON

I very nearly screwed up again here, and could have lost my streak for the second time in a week. Fortunately, that didn't happen – but it was a close-run thing. The problem, for me at least, was that both FRILL and MADLY had a couple of solutions; the former could also have been GRILL, the latter also BADLY. What I should have done is to have played BEFOG, my go-to word in these situations, to establish what both were. But I only looked at the MADLY/BADLY quadrant to begin with, so played BADLY and then had to use another narrowing down word when I came to -RILL in the top left. I escaped with a last-guess victory, but should really have been wise to this trap.

NYT Strands today — hints, answers and spangram for Monday, September 30 (game #211)

Strands is the NYT's latest word game after the likes of Wordle, Spelling Bee and Connections – and it's great fun. It can be difficult, though, so read on for my Strands hints.

Want more word-based fun? Then check out my Wordle today, NYT Connections today and Quordle today pages for hints and answers for those games.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about NYT Strands today is below, so don't read on if you don't want to know the answers.

The answers to today's Strands, game #211, are…

  • HEAVY
  • MIDDLE
  • FEATHER
  • LIGHT
  • WELTER
  • BANTAM
  • CRUISER
  • SPANGRAM: BOXING

  • My rating: Moderate
  • My score: Perfect

I've marked this one as moderate rather than easy, despite the fact that I solved it with no issues, because if you don't watch or know about BOXING you'll probably have found this a lot harder than I did. I'm not a massive fan these days, but I used to watch it a lot in my youth, back when the likes of Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield dominated the HEAVYweight division.

HEAVY is one of the easier words here; you might well have struggled far more with something like BANTAM, CRUISER or worst of all WELTER. So I suspect today's game will see plenty of easy solves like mine, and plenty where people either needed lots of hints or failed outright.

Today's Quordle was a very easy one for me, and probably for you too. My three set start words, STARE, DOILY and PUNCH, gave me all five letters for three of the quadrants and four for the other one, so my task was simply a matter of solving three anagrams and then adding one more letter to the bottom right. The Daily Sequence was just as straightforward; a stark contrast to yesterday's game.

The answers to today's Quordle, game #979, are…

  • SERIF
  • BORNE
  • WRITE
  • SLEEK

A couple of today's words might cause some problems; SERIF is a relatively uncommon word that has a very uncommon format, with that IF ending, while SLEEK contains a repeated E. WRITE was the one I lost a guess on, though: that -RI-E format is a very common one, and could be the likes of TRIBE or TRITE as well as the eventual answer. Other than that, though, my three start words did the hard work and I survived with a guess to spare.

Unfortunately I was far less careful with the Daily Sequence and failed for the second time in only a few days. There were some very difficult words there, admittedly, but I still should have played a lot more sensibly.

  • My rating: Easy
  • My score: Perfect

Today I learned for the first time of KOHLRABI, a vegetable whose name apparently translates literally as 'cabbage turnip' and which tastes a little like a broccoli stem. Fortunately the other answers today were a lot easier to find, although I did struggle a little with the spangram, FALLHARVEST, because here in the UK we say 'autumn' not 'fall'. But no matter – I was able to uncover enough answers that eventually the spangram revealed itself to me, and though it still took me a while to work out that the final word was indeed the aforementioned KOHLRABI, I got there without needing hints.

My only issue with today's Strands is that the theme clue and answers all fit nicely with the idea of 'good or pleasant emotions' – but the spangram is merely EMOTIONS on its own. It's not a major problem, but it mildly annoyed me.

It's not a difficult one, even bearing that in mind. I looked for HAPPINESS at the start of the game and found it quickly, and none of the other words provided any great problems. Once again I was done in only a few minutes. I'd quite like a more difficult game soon, as it happens.

Yesterday I failed the main 'classic' Quordle; today it was the Daily Sequence that did for me. It was the same deal as yesterday, frankly – a failure on my part to allow for words that have multiple answers separated by only one letter. And so it was that I guessed TAMER and TAPER before TAKER, FROCK before CROCK and failed to reach SATYR. The classic version was a cinch in comparison.

NYT Strands today — hints, answers and spangram for Friday, September 27 (game #208)

The answers to today's Strands, game #208, are…

  • MOAT
  • WALL
  • DRAWBRIDGE
  • COURTYARD
  • TOWER
  • KEEP
  • TURRET
  • SPANGRAM: CASTLE

  • My rating: Easy
  • My score: Perfect

This was a spectacularly easy Strands puzzle. If the words 'Medieval marvel' didn't immediately conjure up a CASTLE to you, well, then, you didn't spend as much time during your childhood playing with Lego, reading The Lord of The Rings or watching Robin Hood as I did.

I got the spangram right away, and that made the task of finding the other answers all the easier. None were remotely hard to think of or difficult to uncover, and I completed the whole thing in about three minutes.

How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.

The answers to today's Strands, game #207, are…

  • SWING
  • CRIB
  • HIGHCHAIR
  • STROLLER
  • BLANKET
  • PLAYPEN
  • SPANGRAM: BABYGEAR

  • My rating: Easy
  • My score: 1 hint

I needed a hint here, because the theme clue of 'Special delivery' wasn't enough for me to identify the concept, even once I'd uncovered my first answer, SWING, by accident. This was unfortunate – if I'd have got CRIB or HIGHCHAIR or PLAYPEN I'm sure I'd have been fine. But SWING can mean many things, as can Special delivery, so I was left in the dark until I used that hint.

After that it was plain sailing, other than for the spangram; I could see that BABY was part of it, but needed to cross off a few more answers before I realized that GEAR was the other half of the word. But in summary: it was, um, child's play.

Quordle today – hints and answers for Wednesday, September 25 (game #975)

Quordle was one of the original Wordle alternatives and is still going strong now nearly 1,000 games later. It offers a genuine challenge, though, so read on if you need some Quordle hints today – or scroll down further for the answers.

Enjoy playing word games? You can also check out my Wordle today, NYT Connections today and NYT Strands today pages for hints and answers for those puzzles.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about Quordle today is below, so don't read on if you don't want to know the answers.

Quordle today (game #975) - hint #1 - Vowels

How many different vowels are in Quordle today?

The number of different vowels in Quordle today is 3*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Quordle today (game #975) - hint #2 - repeated letters

Do any of today's Quordle answers contain repeated letters?

The number of Quordle answers containing a repeated letter today is 1.

Quordle today (game #975) - hint #3 - uncommon letters

Do the letters Q, Z, X or J appear in Quordle today?

• Yes. One of Q, Z, X or J appears among today's Quordle answers.

Quordle today (game #975) - hint #4 - starting letters (1)

The number of today's Quordle answers starting with the same letter is 0.

If you just want to know the answers at this stage, simply scroll down. If you're not ready yet then here's one more clue to make things a lot easier:

Quordle today (game #975) - hint #5 - starting letters (2)

• P

Quordle today (game #975) - the answers

The answers to today's Quordle, game #975, are…

  • UMBRA
  • DADDY
  • GLAZE
  • PRANK

According to Merriam-Webster, the dictionary that now owns Quordle, UMBRA means "a conical shadow excluding all light from a given source". I didn't know that before playing today's game, but I do now – so in that sense, Quordle is doing its job! The fact that I solved it without knowing it was an accident. I had the letters U, R, B and A in the top-left of the board, but couldn't assemble them into a word. But I wanted to play something that might at least change some yellows into green, so played around with letter combinations until I found one that the game would accept as a guess. I had no real expectation that it would be right, but all five letters turned green and I solved what was probably the toughest of today's quartet.

Not that the others were easy; DADDY contains a rare triple letter, GLAZE an uncommon Z, so anyone solving today's Quordle can give themselves a pat on the back.

The answers to today's Strands, game #205, are…

  • MARTIAN
  • CYBORG
  • DROID
  • MUTANT
  • ROBOT
  • ALIEN
  • SPANGRAM: SCIENCEFICTION

  • My rating: Easy
  • My score: Perfect

I probably found this Strands game to be even easier than most given that I've been reading SCIENCEFICTION, as the spangram would have it, for about four decades. But even if I hadn't I doubt I would have struggled too much here. Some of the words are slightly, well, basic for the topic – as I said, I read a lot of sci-fi and MUTANTS and MARTIANS really don't crop up that much compared to plenty of other themes, such as time-travel, space flight, AI and the cyberverse. But as a child's guide to the genre, it just about works.

For the second day in a row my Quordle game nearly fell foul of an uncommon letter. Today it was X that tripped me, with ANNEX staying frustratingly out of reach of my brain until the last possible minute, when I'd tried (I think) every other possible letter combination left to me at that point. The double N in the word didn't help either, and nor did the inclusion of GUILT elsewhere; the fact that BUILT also fit meant I had to use up another narrowing-down word to find the correct one.

  • CHINCHILLA
  • PORCUPINE
  • SPANGRAM: RODENTS

  • My rating: Easy
  • My score: 1 hint

I'm rather annoyed at myself for not getting a perfect score today, because this is another fairly easy Strands puzzle from the NYT. But I needed another hint to get going, with no answers standing out despite the (in hindsight) relatively obvious theme clue. The frustrating thing is that 'Gnaw-it-alls' did suggest an animal to me, and I looked for beaver – which seemed the most obvious example. But that wasn't there and I used a hint to get started.

Once I had that first word (HAMSTER) it all became a lot easier. MUSKRAT and SQUIRREL were simple, the spangram even more so, and though the final two were more difficult, in large part due to their spellings, I completed the game in only about five minutes.

It's been a while since we've had an uncommon letter in Quordle – you'd have to go back to SEIZE on September 10. And as with that game, it was a Z that appeared today to make things more complicated. I needed all nine guesses to complete today's puzzle, partly due to that letter tripping me up for ZESTY, but it wasn't the only word I struggled with. DRAWN also caused me problems (and W is another fairly uncommon letter), and this wasn't a game I sailed through with ease.

The answers to today's Strands, game #202, are…

  • ARENA
  • STADIUM
  • NIGHTCLUB
  • THEATER
  • FESTIVAL
  • SPANGRAM: CONCERTVENUE

  • My rating: Moderate
  • My score: 1 hint

I've marked this one as moderate simply because I couldn't get started without a hint; the theme clue of 'I've got the music in me!' seemed too obtuse, despite the fact that with hindsight it was really rather obvious. Once I asked for help and was given ARENA it all became much easier, and I ticked off the likes of STADIUM, NIGHTCLUB and THEATER with no issues.

How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.
