I hate this Strands. Not the puzzle itself – which is just about fine. But CALIFORNIAROLL, which is a disgusting concoction simply because it contains MAYO. Mayo is one of the worst things ever – not just a terrible food, but a plague on society, because IT IS USED IN ALMOST EVERYTHING AND I HATE IT. Listen, you don't need mayo in things. It doesn't make it better. In fact, it spoils it. Just leave it out and taste the actual ingredients rather than smearing this horrible stuff everywhere. Especially in sushi, which doesn't need it at all.

Oh yeah, so there's a game to talk about here too, right? Well it's a reasonably easy one on account of the spangram taking up about half of the board. Most of the answers are relatively easy to find, and if you like mayo then I'm sure you'll be delighted with the whole thing.

One word in today's Quordle is far, far harder than the other three – or at least that was my experience. TIBIA, with its repeated letter I and its B in the middle caused me no end of trouble; I needed three guesses to solve it, despite having three yellows already in place when I started it.

Fortunately, I had three guesses spare, so still scraped home. That was thanks to AWOKE, ITCHY and SNACK all proving much more simple to spot, so the end result was a last-gasp win.

Today's Quordle is one of the easiest I've played recently, but that owes a lot to my three start words, which here gave me all five letters for three of the answers, and four for the other one. I don't think it would be massively more difficult however you played it, as the words and letters are all common and there is only one repeat, the S in ISSUE.

That said, I contrived to need eight guesses still, rather than the seven I could have solved it in, by guessing RAISE rather than ARISE. That was a perfectly acceptable error – there was no way for me to know which of the two it was – but if I'd have solved ERUPT first I wouldn't have had that problem, as the R would have been confirmed in position #2 in both words. Still, it didn't ultimately matter.

There are lots of Ds in today's Quordle – five of them, including two in DRUID. That's great if you played D early on in your game (as I did), less so if you didn't, obviously! But DRUID is probably not the hardest word here (though it is a difficult one), with KNEED arguably taking that spot. Not only does it have a repeated E, but it begins with the uncommon KN combination – so well done if you spotted that.

This is an incredibly straightforward and very easy Strands puzzle, with no real complications at all. The theme clue of 'Commuter benefits' pretty much gives the game away, and once you found the likes of FERRY or TRAIN you'll have known exactly what you needed to do here.

That said, there was one minor complication – namely that the spangram was very long and potentially hard to find. I spotted TRANSPORT early on, and figured it was part of the spangram, but it didn't turn yellow and I knew it wouldn't do, because it didn't touch two sides of the board. It was only relatively late on that I realized it had the word PUBLIC in front of it, at which point everything clicked into place.

As Strands' theme clues go, today's is among the most cryptic we've had – until you know the answer, of course. 'Pixar fare' refers to the classic animated movie RATATOUILLE, which forms the spangram, but the actual theme of the game is not cartoon films but rather the French dish ratatouille, or rather the ingredients for it.

Whether that held you back or not will probably have depended on how much time you spent simply looking randomly for answers. I found PEPPERS and ZUCCHINI without actively trying to, and that was enough to make me realize that I should start looking for vegetables. I still couldn't see the connection with Pixar, but it didn't matter, because once I found EGGPLANT and TOMATOES the spangram revealed itself too.

ABYSS is a nasty word to appear in Quordle or Wordle. All of the letters are in the wrong places. Take a look at my analysis of every Wordle answer for proof: the results there will transfer over to Quordle, and they show that B is only really common at the start of a word, not second, Y generally only appears at the end, not the middle, and S… well, S is common in most positions but it's overwhelmingly more likely to be at the start than elsewhere. Add in the fact that it has a repeated letter and this is a potentially tough word. The good news is that the other three are all fairly straightforward!

There's only one really difficult word in today's Quordle – NEVER, which has a repeated E, an uncommon V and a difficult ER ending (difficult because there are so many of them). But the others are all OK, so I doubt too many people will struggle massively with this one.

Much, as always, will probably depend on luck – and on what your strategy is and indeed whether you even have one at all. If you don't… great, but how on earth do you solve Quordle each day? You're clearly smarter than me!

It must be a difficult job getting the balance right in Strands, but it's fair to say that the difficulty level can swerve all over the place. The theme clue is one of the key reasons for that – sometimes it's cryptic, sometimes a lot more straightforward. Today's, 'Into the woods', leaves very little room for confusion as to what is needed, and once you found one of the easier answers – PINE, WILLOW or BEECH, for instance, you'll have had that suspicion confirmed. After that it will just have been a case of ticking them off one by one, which is what I was able to do here with little fuss.

There are four truly uncommon letters within Wordle, and therefore within Quordle: X, Q, Z and J. These appear far less frequently than the other 22 characters; in fact, as my analysis of every Wordle answer shows, if you had the total appearances for all four it's still lower than that for the next least common letter in the list, V. None of those four appear here, but the next three – V, W and K – all do, and that makes today's game a little harder than some. What's more, W is repeated in WIDOW, and V appears in LEVER, in-between another repeated letter. Tough gig.

I do like a nice cracker with a bit of cheese, but have hardly heard of any of the types in today's Strands, so struggled to uncover them all and needed a couple of hints. RICE and WATER I'm aware of (and have eaten), GOLDFISH I was vaguely aware of from TV and movies but SODA, OYSTER and SALTINE… nope, no experience with them. Well, I say that, but it turns out I am aware of them, I'd just never heard them called that.

Anyway, you don't care about my eating habits, so I'll shut up about it and simply say that if you got the rather easy spangram – which the theme clue didn't really help with AT ALL – plus maybe one or two of the others, you'll probably have been OK today.

Sometimes my start words – STARE, DOILY and PUNCH – make Quordle much easier than it would otherwise be. Yesterday was one of those days, and today was another: those three words gave me five letters for SATYR and CLONE, giving me a couple of simple anagrams to solve, plus four for LAUGH and CACHE; I was never in danger of failing today.

I have experimented with using two start words instead, or even one, but either strategy just leaves too much work to do. I'll never score better than a 7 with this approach, but I also solve almost every single puzzle – and that suits my cautious nature.

No complaints about today's Strands, it was simply too difficult for me to solve without needing some hints. But it's a good one in general – nicely coherent in terms of the theme clue and spangram working properly together and with six other answers that were all gettable – but not easy.

The problem, as I found, was that even when I knew what I needed to do, I couldn't wrestle any COMMONSCENTS from the deepest regions of my brain and on to the Strands board. LEMON was obvious, and I spotted SANDALWOOD simply because of its position on the corner/side of the board, but for some reason I couldn't think of the likes of MUSK and ROSE, even though with hindsight they are obvious. I got there in the end, though, and that's enough for me today.

Today's Quordle puzzle is not too bad compared to many; there are no uncommon letters, no repeated letters, no obscure words. And to make it easier still, two of the answers begin with the same letter, B, which always helps. I sailed through them all, thanks in no small part to my three start words giving me four letters for two of the answers, and five for another.

But the Daily Sequence is a different matter: all four words are potentially difficult and TWIXT is an absolute nightmare of a solution. Well done if you solved that one!

I'm unusual (in the TechRadar office at least) in not caring in the slightest about my birthday. I don't celebrate it, and haven't done for years - it's just another day. I don't resent people who go big on their birthdays as such, but I do wonder why it's so important that we mark the fact the Earth has rotated various multiples of 365 times since the day we were born. I think this might just be me, though.

Anyway, this was one of those Strands games where I simply could not get started without help. The theme clue of 'one for the ages' simply didn't give me enough to go on to work out the concept, so I used up a hint, which gave me the word CAKE, and after that it wasn't so bad.
