Quordle today – hints and answers for Thursday, February 1 (game #738)

It's time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.

Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I'm still playing now, around two years after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it's fun, but also difficult.

What's more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.

But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for today's Wordle answer, you'll probably need some hints for this game too.

I'm a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who's been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Quordle hints to game #738 and the answers to the main game and Daily Sequence.

Quordle FAQs: Everything you need to know

What is Quordle?

Where Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And rather than complete them in turn, you do so simultaneously. You get nine guesses, rather than the six for Wordle, but the rules are otherwise very similar.

It's played online via the Quordle website and you can also get to it via the Merriam-Webster site, after the dictionary purchased Quordle last year

As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world. And also as with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a fresh challenge each day.

The website also includes a practice mode - which I definitely recommend using before attempting the game proper! - and there are daily stats including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements - specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing lots of times, or guessing particularly hard words.

Oh, and it's difficult. Really difficult.

What are the Quordle rules?

The rules of Quordle are almost identical to those of Wordle.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray…

4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so an A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the final two.

5. Answers are never plural.

6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

8. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent of Wordle's Hard mode.

9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.

10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

Quordle needs to be approached in a different way to Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can't blindly throw letters at it and expect to win - you'll stand a far better chance if you think strategically.

That's the case in Wordle too, of course, but it's even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember.

1. Use several starting words

Firstly, you won't want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words.

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starting words, because the same things that make them work well will apply here too. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use up lots more of the most common consonants and that include any remaining vowels.

For instance, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters in the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options - you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe - but something like that should do the trick.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!

2. Narrow things down

Secondly, if you're faced with a word where the answer might easily be one of several options - for instance -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH - you'll definitely want to guess a word that would narrow down those options.

In Wordle, you can instead try several of those in succession and hope one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It's risky, but will sometimes work. Plus, it's the only option in Hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure - you simply don't have enough guesses.

In the scenario above, CLAMP would be a great guess, as it could point the way to four of the seven words in one go.

Microsoft Edge might have just been caught red-handed helping itself to Google Chrome user data

Microsoft has had a history of implementing moves that leave users at best confused, and at worst very annoyed, and it looks like becoming the world’s most valuable company by market cap hasn’t discouraged it in the slightest.

This time, Microsoft is being accused of siphoning data from browsers made by other tech companies. Apparently, having its own proprietary browser, Microsoft Edge, and all the user data it accumulates with that isn’t enough.

Neowin reports that users are angered because Microsoft is being accused of not requesting permission to take data like opened tabs and more from Google Chrome. Like Google Chrome itself and other browsers, Edge also has a feature where you can migrate and sync your data and saved information from another browser, allowing you to switch more easily.

When you first download and set up Edge, you’ll be asked if you’d like to permit Edge to access this information and do this, but is otherwise turned off by default.

Bug or intentional data plucking?

This migration option is fairly commonplace, but here’s where the problem comes in: Edge is seemingly reaching in and nabbing that kind of data from Chrome (if you have both installed) even when you’ve not given it the permission to do so.

The Verge’s Tom Warren very explicitly called Microsoft out for doing just that, explaining how after installing a Windows 11 update and rebooting his PC, Microsoft Edge opened with his Google Chrome tabs from his last session even though he didn’t authorize Edge to do that.

He investigated the matter, found that this happened on two devices, and then went to X (formerly Twitter) to reach out and see if others had shared his experience. Turns out, this wasn’t an isolated incident as many users echoed Warren’s experience.

However, Neowin attempted to replicate this scenario on PC and on virtual machines, but was unsuccessful. It’s currently unclear if this was a bug or an intentional move. So far, Microsoft hasn’t clarified this so I’ve reached out to get a comment on the situation, and I will update this story when I hear back.

If this is indeed intentional, then it’s a pretty egregious overstepping of user privacy, and Microsoft is in danger of upsetting a lot of its users with the move. Users have already been frustrated and annoyed with Microsoft’s behavior, like insistently questioning why users want to download Google Chrome, and continuously bugging users to transition to using Microsoft Edge and Bing

Developments like this will no doubt continue to annoy users, which considering that Microsoft wants to be the go-to AI-assisted software powerhouse (e.g. with the introduction of Windows Copilot), does not bode well. On the other hand, if this is an innocent bug, Microsoft should still quickly move to address and fix the issue, before it loses any more goodwill.

Quordle today – hints and answers for Monday, January 29 (game #735)

Read on for my Quordle hints to game #735 and the answers to the main game and Daily Sequence.

Google’s upcoming Chrome release could be good for Windows on ARM devices taking on MacBooks and Chromebooks

Google Chrome is coming to Windows 11 devices running on ARM processors. A new version of the browser has been released through the Canary release channel which will allow users with ARM-based devices to run Chrome natively - rather than having to use an emulator (which brings its own complexities and performance issues).

ARM-based mobile devices are very common already, and ARM processors and ARM-based chips (like Apple’s M1, M2, and M3 silicon chips) are becoming more commonplace in devices like PCs. Unfortunately, those running Windows on a device with an ARM chip couldn’t use Chrome natively and would have to use a workaround like running Chrome in emulation mode.

This isn’t the end of the world, but if you’re emulating a virtual device within your device, you’re relying on the processing constraints of the virtual device. This limited how well Chrome performed on ARM-64 processor devices, until now, thanks to the latest release in the Canary channel, which is for very early and potentially unstable versions of Google Chrome, and which users can download and test at their discretion.

Chromium, an open-source web browser project mainly developed and maintained by Google, has supported ARM-64’s architecture for many years. Oddly enough, Google Chrome itself (which is based on Chromium) has been available for most ARM-oriented operating systems – except Windows. It’s uncertain why Google Chrome has taken this much time to support Windows on ARM-based computers. Google has two operating systems that are designed to run on ARM hardware – Android for mobile devices and ChromeOS for Chromebooks – and Windows on ARM is a direct competitor, which could be one (rather cynical) reason.

MSPowerUser investigated for itself if this Canary version actually worked on a machine with an ARM processor that runs a recent version of Windows 11, and found that it worked on at least one such device that had an older Snapdragon 835 SoC processor.

What to consider before downloading and installing

It’s worth remembering that even if you have an ARM-based Windows 11 device, this is a Canary channel build that you should carefully consider before downloading and installing. It's prone to instability and is specifically intended to be the first round of external testing by Google for Chrome. It will probably make its way down through the slightly less frequent, but more tested and more stable, release channels. If you have an ARM-based Windows 11 device, and you're not a tester or developer, it’s probably worth waiting for one of these later releases.

This release is not far from Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon X Elite chip debut and this is forecasted to significantly step up the performance of ARM64-based devices, which could see a resurgence in Windows on ARM devices to take on Apple’s ARM-based MacBooks.

With more devices on offer with ARM processors that run Windows, we could see ARM processors continue to play an important part in PCs and laptops - and challenging the dominance of Intel and AMD. Google extending Google Chrome support to these devices could help make this happen, and I'm betting that other processor manufacturers (cough, Intel) are paying attention.

Meta bulks up Instagram safety and finally restricts strangers from messaging minors by default

Meta, parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is implementing new default settings that will stop strangers from messaging minors. Parents and guardians will be able to access enhanced parental supervision tools allowing them increased control over the safety and privacy settings of their teens’ Instagram accounts.

These changes are the tech firm’s latest effort to offer better protection to minors on its platforms.

In a Newsroom post, Meta elaborated that these stricter default messaging settings will apply to teens under 16 years old (or under 18 in some countries). This will mean that they won’t be able to receive messages or be added into group chats by users they’re not connected to on Instagram or on Facebook (or Facebook Messenger).

Meta began this present push to reinforce its safeguards for minors in 2023 after years of ongoing discussion about the impact social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook have on children and teenagers reached boiling point. Last year, a New Mexico state attorney leveled some heavy accusations at Meta’s algorithms and Mark Zuckerberg in court, as reported by The Verge, calling Facebook and Meta a “marketplace for predators in search of children.”

This development follows an earlier policy which banned users aged over 19 from contacting minors through direct messages if the minors don’t follow them, and Meta has now extended this to apply to all users who try to message minors. Teens whose accounts are supervised and linked to the accounts of a parent or guardian will have to ask for permission to change this new default setting.

According to Meta, Instagram users will be formally informed of the changes with a message at the top of their feeds.

New parental controls incoming

This new change isn’t all that parents and guardians should be aware of:  parental supervision tools are also being revamped. So, if a child tries to change their safety and privacy settings, a prompt will appear for parents asking if they want to approve the child’s request.

Previously, parents would only be notified of any changes made by children to their Instagram accounts. This strikes me as a pretty important change and I’m a little surprised this wasn’t the case already. While there is a balance to be struck between control and freedom for children and parents, especially in the age of rapidly-changing tech, I think parents appreciate changes that make it easier to protect their children in a proactive way, while also respecting their children's privacy.

According to The Verge, Meta is also currently working on a new feature that will hopefully help protect users from inappropriate, unwanted, or harmful images sent by other users they’ve already connected with. It will also attempt to discourage the users who are sending such content from doing it in the first place. Meta hasn’t stated a date for when users can expect this change to come about, but that more information will come - hopefully soon.

This is a good move from Meta, in my opinion, even if it's pretty overdue. This is dependent, of course, on parents being aware and involved in their children’s digital lives at all and that remains one of the biggest issues facing child safety on the internet. Moves from social media companies like this are certainly welcome, but they should not be a replacement for active and considerate parenting either.
