Quordle today - hints and answers for Wednesday, November 1 (game #646)

It's time for your daily dose of Quordle hints, plus the answers for both the main game and the Daily Sequence spin off.

Quordle is the only one of the many Wordle clones that I'm still playing now, around 18 months after the daily-word-game craze hit the internet, and with good reason: it's fun, but also difficult.

What's more, its makers (now the online dictionary Merriam-Webster) are also keeping it fresh in the form of a variant called the Daily Sequence, which sees you complete four puzzles consecutively, rather than concurrently.

But Quordle is tough, so if you already find yourself searching for Wordle hints, you'll probably need some for this game too.

I'm a Quordle and Wordle fanatic who's been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Quordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Quordle hints to game #646 and the answers to the main game and Daily Sequence.

Quordle FAQs: Everything you need to know

What is Quordle?

Where Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And rather than complete them in turn, you do so simultaneously. You get nine guesses, rather than the six for Wordle, but the rules are otherwise very similar.

It's played online via the Quordle website and you can also get to it via the Merriam-Webster site, after the dictionary purchased Quordle last year

As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world. And also as with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a fresh challenge each day.

The website also includes a practice mode - which I definitely recommend using before attempting the game proper! - and there are daily stats including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements - specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing lots of times, or guessing particularly hard words.

Oh, and it's difficult. Really difficult.

What are the Quordle rules?

The rules of Quordle are almost identical to those of Wordle.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray…

4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so an A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the final two.

5. Answers are never plural.

6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

8. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent of Wordle's Hard mode.

9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.

10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

Quordle needs to be approached in a different way to Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can't blindly throw letters at it and expect to win - you'll stand a far better chance if you think strategically.

That's the case in Wordle too, of course, but it's even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember.

1. Use several starting words

Firstly, you won't want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words.

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starting words, because the same things that make them work well will apply here too. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use up lots more of the most common consonants and that include any remaining vowels.

For instance, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters in the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options - you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe - but something like that should do the trick.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!

2. Narrow things down

Secondly, if you're faced with a word where the answer might easily be one of several options - for instance -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH - you'll definitely want to guess a word that would narrow down those options.

In Wordle, you can instead try several of those in succession and hope one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It's risky, but will sometimes work. Plus, it's the only option in Hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure - you simply don't have enough guesses.

In the scenario above, CLAMP would be a great guess, as it could point the way to four of the seven words in one go.

Quordle today - hints and answers for Saturday, October 28 (game #642)

Read on for my Quordle hints to game #642 and the answers to the main game and Daily Sequence.

Navigating a Google Chrome conundrum - what you can do to fix recent problems in macOS Sonoma

A new macOS is upon us, macOS Sonoma, and unfortunately it’s come with a new bundle of software problems for users. The latest of these is Google Chrome not working for some users when in full screen mode on macOS.

While Apple would rather that macOS users use its own web browser, Safari, many users prefer to use Google’s popular alternative, Chrome. However, it seems that some users have been encountering problems like tabs freezing, and parts of the screen or the whole browser becoming unresponsive. According to PiunikaWeb, this problem has also been reportedly happening with the previous generation of macOS, Ventura. This suggests that the problem actually comes from Google’s end and that update M118 for Google Chrome is to blame.

Users have been less than satisfied with Chrome’s macOS performance with these types of glitches happening frequently, forcing them to close and reopen Chrome, potentially losing their session. The regular recurrence is what makes the problem especially  frustrating. When the Chrome window or tab becomes unresponsive, users report that they can’t interact with parts of the screen such as tabs and buttons at all.

Fixes you can try if your Chrome isn't working

This seems to happen more often when Chrome is in full-screen mode, so one workaround is to just avoid using Chrome on macOS in full-screen mode. This isn’t an ideal solution for people who want (or need) to use Chrome in full screen mode, however. Not all hope is lost, because there are a couple things you can try to see if they remedy the problem

The first thing you can try is to make sure that you have the latest version of Chrome:

1. Enter chrome://settings/help in your Chrome address bar (or you navigate to this from your menu which can be found by clicking the three-dot icon at the top right corner of your browser).

2. Check what version of Chrome you are running (this should be visible).

3. If any updates had become available, your browser should have installed them and what’s left is to restart your browser. Click Relaunch to update/Relaunch

Simply updating your browser could help, and if Google has developed any patches for the issue, they will be applied.

If the above doesn’t work, you can try checking that you have the latest macOS version and updating it if you don’t. Some users have found that applying any macOS update and relaunching Chrome resolved the issue when the above approach didn’t help.

If none of these solutions work for you, it might be best to use a different browser until Google works out a further solution for users to try. You can try Apple’s own Safari, Microsoft’s Edge (which is built on Chromium, and is available for macOS), or FireFox. Make sure you check out our rundown of the best web browsers you can use in 2023.

It looks like Google knows about this glitch and it’s developing a solution, and it’s suggested that users don’t use full-screen while in Google Chrome for the time being. We expect that the patch for the problem will be ready pretty quickly as Google is usually pretty efficient at addressing problems once they’re known.

Hopefully one of the shorter fixes helps you fix the issue, but if not, don’t worry - it should be patched up in no time. If full-screen mode is fundamental to your being, then maybe you’ll consider checking out a new browser, even just to compare and contrast, and see what else is out there.

Microsoft now demands to know why you just won’t use Edge when you inevitably download Chrome using it

Microsoft is making some interesting (and potentially controversial) moves to try and encourage users to its browser, Edge, instead of its arch-rival Google Chrome. If you want to download the installer for Google Chrome using Edge (which is the only web browser pre-installed in Windows 10 and Windows 11), Microsoft now apparently demands to know why in a poll.

If you use Edge for any browsing, you’ll probably have noticed that it’s already peppered with ads, banners, and pop-ups to urge you to keep Edge as your default browser, and it looks like Microsoft thinks it’s not been putting enough pressure on its users.

NeoWin made the discovery when trying to download Chrome while using Microsoft Edge. When users open and wait for the Chrome download to begin, Microsoft opens a sidebar and presents users with a poll that interrogates users on why they think they need another browser. The wording sounds pretty civil, but it could be construed as a very aggressive and presumptive move on Microsoft’s part.

The poll question and possible answers are:

Can you please take a minute to tell us why you are trying another browser?

I can't search Google easily

I can't access my Google documents

I don't have my favorites or passwords here

Too many ads and pop-ups

I don't like the news feed

It's too slow

My websites don't work on Microsoft Edge

My reason is not listed

Microsoft Edge

So, what do users actually think?

NeoWin points out that some of the most popular user complaints about Edge are listed, but not all of them, like Edge’s news feed being full of poor quality press stories. You can turn the news feed off, however, and the Edge browser has other problems it should address first. Specifically, the constant suggestions and pop-ups to try the various new revamped Microsoft products and services. I understand why Microsoft wants to know this information and it could actually help improve Microsoft products, but the way it’s being collected will probably rub users the wrong way.

Look, I get that Microsoft recently put in whopping investments into OpenAI and integrating its artificial intelligence tech into its products, and it wants to see a return - but we users like at least the illusion of choice. We are constantly bombarded with messaging and advertising every minute of every day, and if anything, many of us appreciate when a company can demonstrate that it can provide value to us without a constant barrage.
